Official Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) does not support Bukkit-, Spigot-, Paper-, or Purpur-style plugins. You cannot copy a Java .jar into a BDS plugins folder and expect it to load. Microsoft’s supported extension model is behavior packs, resource packs, and JavaScript Script APIs, plus ordinary server configuration.

What “plugins” means on Bedrock in 2026
In the Java Edition server ecosystem, a plugin normally means a server-side package loaded by a Bukkit-compatible system. The plugin can listen for events, add commands, change gameplay, manage permissions, or integrate with databases without modifying the client. That model is associated with loaders and APIs such as Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, and Purpur.
Official Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different model. Microsoft’s BDS documentation describes configuration files, behavior and resource packs, and JavaScript modules. It does not document a traditional plugin loader or a Java archive format. Therefore, a page advertising a “Bedrock plugin” may actually be talking about PocketMine-MP, Nukkit-derived software, Endstone, a Java server accepting Bedrock connections, or a script/pack rather than official BDS.

What works on official Bedrock Dedicated Server
Behavior packs
Behavior packs are the official data-driven way to alter many world and gameplay systems. Depending on the feature, a pack can define entities, components, loot, recipes, functions, spawn rules, and other data. They are installed as pack content and enabled for a world; they are not dynamically loaded Bukkit plugins.
Resource packs
Resource packs change client-facing assets such as textures, models, sounds, and UI resources. A resource pack can accompany a behavior pack when a feature needs both server-side data and custom presentation. Players may need to accept the pack when joining, depending on the server’s world and pack settings.

Microsoft documents JavaScript modules including @minecraft/server, @minecraft/server-ui, @minecraft/server-admin, @minecraft/server-editor, and GameTest-related APIs. These scripts can provide logic that packs alone cannot, such as event handling, scheduled actions, UI forms, and administrative operations supported by the relevant module.
There is an important stability qualification: Microsoft’s BDS scripting guidance describes additional APIs as Beta or experimental. Experimental APIs can change, gain restrictions, or be removed as Minecraft updates. A script that works on one BDS release therefore needs testing against the exact release you intend to run. The BDS scripting guidance also does not apply to Realms; a dedicated server script setup is not a Realms extension mechanism.

Server configuration
Files such as server.properties, allowlists, port settings, and world options control how BDS operates. They are configuration surfaces, not plugin interfaces. Configuration can set the server’s rules and access policy, but it does not install an event-driven plugin framework.
Why Bukkit and Spigot plugins cannot run on BDS
Bukkit-compatible plugins are compiled for Java server APIs and normally arrive as .jar files. Official BDS is separate server software with a different runtime, file layout, event model, and API. It has no documented component that scans a plugins directory, resolves a Java plugin’s dependencies, or exposes Bukkit events.

Renaming the file, placing it beside the world, or adding a plugins folder cannot supply the missing Java runtime and Bukkit API. A plugin must be ported to a Bedrock-supported approach, or the server architecture must change.

PocketMine-MP: real plugins, different vanilla behavior
PocketMine-MP is independent Bedrock server software with a documented plugin API. Its documentation explicitly states that the server can be extended and customized with plugins. Plugins are commonly packaged as .phar files and placed in the server’s plugins directory. Poggit is the documented release source used by many PocketMine plugin authors.

How PocketMine plugin installation works
- Install a PocketMine-MP build compatible with the Minecraft client version your players will use.
- Read the plugin’s manifest and documentation before downloading it. The
plugin.ymlfile declares the plugin API version and other metadata. - Place the compatible
.pharpackage in the PocketMinepluginsdirectory. - Start or restart the server and inspect the console for dependency, permission, or API errors.
- Configure the plugin using the files it creates, then test commands and gameplay in a separate world before updating a production world.
PocketMine refuses plugins whose declared API is incompatible with the server. That check prevents some failures, but it does not guarantee that every gameplay assumption matches your target Minecraft release.
The trade-off
PocketMine is not a drop-in replacement for vanilla BDS. Its own documentation warns about missing or substantially different vanilla behavior, including vanilla world generation, redstone, and mob AI. Choose it when plugin functionality is more important than exact vanilla parity. If a technical or community project depends on Bedrock’s native simulation, test every critical mechanic before migrating.
The PocketMine documentation result identified release 5.44.4, but release numbers are time-sensitive. Verify the current PocketMine version, supported Minecraft protocol, and plugin API before installing anything in 2026.
Endstone: BDS-based software with Python and C++ APIs
Endstone is third-party server software based on BDS technology. Its documentation provides Python and C++ plugin APIs and describes a Bukkit/Paper-like programming model. Installation options documented by the project include pip and Docker, allowing you to select a deployment style that fits your hosting environment.

When Endstone fits
- You want Bedrock-focused server software rather than a Java server.
- Your team prefers Python or C++ for extensions.
- You need deeper server hooks than official packs and scripts expose.
What to verify first
Endstone is actively developed, so check its current supported Minecraft version, plugin API version, installation instructions, and the status of the specific plugins you plan to use. A plugin written for one Endstone API revision may need changes after a Minecraft or Endstone update. Treat it as a moving platform rather than a permanently fixed BDS plugin standard.

Geyser is a bridge between Minecraft Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Java Edition. It does not add Bukkit plugins to official BDS. Instead, it lets Bedrock clients connect to a Java server, where Java software such as Paper or Spigot loads its normal plugins.
The architecture
- Run a Java server and install the Java plugins you need in that server’s
pluginsdirectory. - Install the Geyser distribution appropriate to that architecture, such as the server plugin or another distribution documented by Geyser.
- Configure the Bedrock listener, Java connection details, authentication, and network ports according to the current Geyser instructions.
- Test with both a Java client and a Bedrock client. A feature that works for Java players may have different UI, movement, inventory, or input behavior through the bridge.
Geyser also offers mod and standalone distributions. Floodgate can be used when Bedrock players need to join without a paid Java account, subject to the current Geyser and server-authentication documentation. Authentication choices affect account identity, permissions, and plugin behavior, so test them before opening the server to players.
Step-by-step: selecting the right route
Choose official BDS when vanilla fidelity is the priority
- Install the BDS release matching your target Minecraft version.
- Configure
server.properties, ports, world settings, and the allowlist. - Add and enable behavior packs and resource packs for data and asset changes.
- Write or install JavaScript scripts using only the modules supported by that BDS release.
- Keep a backup world and test scripts after every Minecraft update, especially when they rely on experimental APIs.
Choose PocketMine when PHP plugins are the priority
- Confirm that the features you need exist as maintained PocketMine plugins.
- Check each plugin’s
plugin.ymlAPI declaration, dependencies, and supported Minecraft version. - Install the server and plugins in a test environment first.
- Compare critical mechanics such as redstone circuits, mob behavior, and world generation with your expectations.
- Migrate players only after gameplay and data backups are verified.
Choose Endstone when you need Python or C++ hooks
- Read Endstone’s current compatibility table and installation method.
- Pin or record the Endstone, Minecraft, and plugin API versions used by your deployment.
- Install through the documented pip or Docker path.
- Load one plugin at a time and review startup logs for API or dependency failures.
- Re-test after updates because the project’s API and supported versions are still evolving.
Choose Java plus Geyser when Java plugins are non-negotiable
- Select a Java server version supported by your required plugins and by Geyser.
- Install and configure the Java plugins first with Java players.
- Add Geyser using the distribution appropriate to your server architecture.
- Configure network ports and authentication, optionally adding Floodgate if its current requirements fit your account model.
- Test every player-facing feature from Bedrock, not just from Java, before treating the setup as production-ready.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“The plugin does not appear in the console”
On official BDS, this is expected for a Bukkit or Spigot .jar; there is no documented loader. Move the feature to a behavior pack or Script API, or migrate to PocketMine, Endstone, or Java plus Geyser.

“A Bedrock plugin list promises compatibility”
Identify the server software named in the listing. A PocketMine .phar, an Endstone extension, a Nukkit-derived plugin, and a Java plugin exposed through Geyser are not interchangeable. Download only packages that name your exact server and API version.

“A script broke after a Minecraft update”
Check whether it uses an additional experimental API, then compare its module versions and permissions with the current BDS scripting documentation. Restore the last known-good script or world backup, test in isolation, and update the code for the current API rather than assuming the old behavior remains supported.
“The server runs, but gameplay feels wrong”
This is most often a software-choice issue. PocketMine can differ from vanilla in world generation, redstone, and mob AI; Geyser can present Java mechanics through a Bedrock translation layer. Reproduce the issue on the server software you actually selected before changing individual plugins.
Maintenance rules for 2026
- Record the Minecraft version, server build, API version, and plugin versions together.
- Read release notes before updating; compatibility is not implied by a similar version number.
- Keep an offline backup of worlds, configuration, pack files, scripts, and plugin data.
- Test updates on a staging server with both the server edition and client editions your players use.
- Expect experimental BDS Script APIs and actively developed third-party platforms to change.
The practical answer is simple: official BDS supports packs, configuration, and JavaScript APIs—not traditional plugins. For plugins, select the server software whose API matches your language, desired vanilla fidelity, and player editions.
