Put Nginx, PHP-FPM, the WordPress tree, its PHP-FPM socket, logs and temporary directories inside a deliberately small filesystem view; connect that jail to a separately protected database through a controlled bridge network. Start with Firejail’s template or a generated profile, then remove permissions through repeated tests of administration, uploads, updates, cron and recovery.

This design limits what a compromised web process can see and do, but it does not replace WordPress updates, database least privilege, TLS, backups or host hardening. The commands below are an architecture and workflow. Package names, PHP versions, service units, socket paths and log handling differ between distributions and must be checked on the target host.

What Firejail isolates—and what it does not
Firejail is a SUID program that reduces the impact of an untrusted application by restricting its environment with Linux namespaces and seccomp-bpf. A normal sandbox creates new mount, PID and UTS namespaces, mounts major system directories read-only and normally leaves /home and /tmp writable unless a profile changes those defaults.
For WordPress, the useful boundary is the web tier. Nginx and PHP-FPM run in one jail with only the files, sockets and network paths they need. The database runs in a separate environment, so a web-process compromise is not automatically a database-host compromise. Firejail is not a chroot replacement in the sense of being a complete operating-system security boundary: privileged host mistakes, vulnerable kernels, exposed management interfaces and weak credentials remain outside the profile.

Recommended WordPress jail architecture
Use two service boundaries rather than placing Nginx, PHP-FPM and the database in one sandbox.
| Component | Location | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Nginx | Web-server Firejail sandbox | Accepts HTTP or HTTPS and serves static files; passes PHP requests to the local PHP-FPM socket. |
| PHP-FPM | Same web-server sandbox | Executes WordPress and plugin code with the profile’s filesystem and syscall restrictions. |
| WordPress files | Explicitly exposed document root, usually /var/www/html |
Core files, themes, plugins and uploads. Keep code read-only where your update process permits. |
| Database | Separate host, VM, container or Firejail service boundary | Stores WordPress data. Permit only the web jail’s database connection. |
| Logs | Explicit log files or a host logging endpoint | Provides Nginx, PHP-FPM and application diagnostics without granting broad host access. |
| Network bridge | Dedicated bridge or equivalent controlled interface | Gives the web jail a predictable address and limits routes and egress. |
A reference deployment starts the web jail with a private filesystem view, a chroot, bridge networking and a fixed private IP. Nginx and PHP-FPM communicate over the local socket; PHP connects to the database over the configured private network. Treat the exact interface, address and route as local infrastructure values rather than copy-and-paste defaults.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallInventory WordPress before writing a profile
Profile mistakes usually come from an incomplete inventory, not from Firejail itself. Record the following while the site is working normally:
- Document root and ownership, including the location of
wp-config.php, themes, plugins and uploads. - PHP extensions used by the current WordPress version and plugins, plus the PHP-FPM binary and pool configuration.
- The PHP-FPM Unix socket path and permissions. Common distributions place it in different directories and give it different names.
- Nginx configuration, web root, included snippets, MIME data, TLS certificate paths and access/error log destinations.
- Temporary directories used by PHP uploads, image processing, backups and update extraction.
- WordPress scheduled-task behavior: traffic-driven WP-Cron, a system scheduler, or a separate command that invokes
wp-cron.php. - Outbound destinations: DNS, update servers, external APIs, object storage, payment providers, SMTP and the database address.
- Administrative recovery paths, including SSH or console access to the host and a known-good backup.
Do not grant a directory merely because an application might use it. Start with the smallest set of read-only paths and writable paths that the inventory proves necessary.
Prepare the host and the service boundary
Install and verify Firejail
Install the Firejail package supplied by the target distribution, then verify that the binary can create a sandbox and that the kernel supports the namespaces and seccomp features your policy expects. Review the installed manual and profile directory rather than assuming paths from another distribution.
Firejail profile lookup checks the per-user directory ~/.config/firejail/ before /etc/firejail/. If no matching profile is found, Firejail falls back to a restrictive default profile. For a production service, select the intended file explicitly so a profile rename or search-path change cannot silently alter policy:

firejail --profile=/etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile <service-start-command>
Run the service as a dedicated account with no interactive shell where practical. Ensure the account can read the exposed WordPress tree and write only the directories that operations require.
Build or assign the database boundary
Place the database outside the web jail. Apply a database account restricted to the single WordPress database and the operations WordPress needs. Bind the database to the private interface used by the web jail, enforce host-based access controls and encrypt the connection when it crosses an untrusted segment. Do not expose a database listener to the public Internet just because the web jail needs outbound access.
Choose the bridge and address deliberately
Create or reuse a host bridge that has only the routes the web tier needs. Give the jail a fixed private address if firewall rules, database allow-lists or monitoring depend on a stable identity. Decide whether DNS, outbound HTTPS, SMTP and other egress are allowed independently; “network enabled” is not the same as “safe network policy.”
Start with a profile, then edit it
Use the shipped template
Firejail’s profile guidance recommends beginning with /usr/share/doc/firejail/profile.template. Copy it to a site-specific profile and document every exception. Keep that file under configuration management so a package update cannot erase your changes.
Recommended Free Tools
sudo cp /usr/share/doc/firejail/profile.template /etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile
sudo editor /etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile
Generate a draft when useful
The profile builder can observe an application run and create a draft:
firejail --build=wordpress-web.profile <application-command>
A generated profile is not a finished policy. It contains only behavior exercised during that build run; an administration screen, media upload, update, cron job or uncommon plugin can require paths that the builder never saw. Inspect every line, remove broad permissions, and test the resulting file under a non-production copy of the site.

Make profile selection unambiguous
Use an explicit profile path during testing and service startup:
firejail --profile=/etc/firejail/wordpress-web.profile <command>
Profile names can also be selected by name according to the Debian manual, but an absolute path is easier to audit in deployment scripts. Confirm which file Firejail actually loaded before trusting a successful start.

The web jail needs a coherent runtime, not just the WordPress directory. Expose immutable operating-system data read-only, then add the application paths one by one.
| Path or resource | Typical policy | Why it is needed |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress document root | Read-only for normal serving; narrowly writable for updates if you do not deploy code separately | Core, themes, plugins and uploads. |
| Uploads directory | Writable by the PHP-FPM account | Media uploads and generated image sizes. |
wp-config.php |
Readable, not writable by the web process | Database credentials and site settings. |
| PHP-FPM socket directory | Visible to Nginx and PHP-FPM with matching ownership | Local FastCGI communication. |
| Nginx and PHP-FPM logs | Writable only to the logging process or redirected to a controlled host sink | Diagnostics and incident review. |
| Temporary directory | Private and writable, with limited size and cleanup | Uploads, archives and image processing. |
| CA certificates, timezone and resolver data | Read-only | TLS validation, correct time handling and DNS. |
Do not accidentally leave the host’s entire /home or /tmp available. The default sandbox makes those locations writable unless the profile changes them, which is broader than a WordPress web process normally needs. Give PHP a private temporary area and expose only the site’s required data.
Runtime directories must exist before daemons start. If a profile hides the host’s log tree, create the files inside the jail or bind a controlled directory. A missing socket parent, PID directory or log file often looks like a service failure even though the binary is healthy.
Configure Nginx and PHP-FPM inside the jail
Nginx document root and front-controller routing
The reference configuration serves /var/www/html, uses index.php as an index and sends missing paths to WordPress’s front controller with try_files. Keep those semantics when adapting the configuration, but use the syntax and include paths supplied by the installed Nginx package.

That fragment is the routing behavior, not a complete server block. Add the site’s TLS, upload limits, FastCGI parameters, static-file policy and access controls according to the distribution’s Nginx layout. Verify that the FastCGI parameter file is visible inside the jail and that its SCRIPT_FILENAME path matches the jail’s document root.
PHP-FPM socket and path handling
Nginx and PHP-FPM must agree on the exact Unix socket path and on the user and group that can access it. A host may use a versioned socket under /run/php, a pool-specific path or a different runtime directory. Expose only that directory to the jail and create it before startup.
The historical walkthrough associated with this architecture changed PHP’s cgi.fix_pathinfo setting to 0. Apply that setting only after confirming the directive exists in the installed PHP version, and verify the effective value from the running PHP-FPM configuration. PHP 5 package names and SysV init scripts in that walkthrough are legacy examples; current distributions commonly use newer PHP packages, systemd units and different socket locations.
Keep logs available without opening the host
A reference startup creates /var/log/nginx/error.log and /var/log/nginx/access.log, starts rsyslog, then starts Nginx and PHP-FPM. That sequence reflects an older service layout. On a current host, choose one method: create explicit files in the jail, write to a supervised stdout/stderr collector, or forward to a host logging socket that is intentionally exposed. Do not mount the host’s complete /var/log tree merely to make one error log appear.
Launch sequence: make dependencies visible before daemons
A reliable startup does not start Nginx first and discover missing paths afterward. Build the runtime in dependency order. The following is a checklist; replace each service command with the unit or launcher used by your distribution.
- Create the jail’s runtime directories for the PHP-FPM socket, PID files, temporary files and logs.
- Check ownership and permissions for the document root, uploads and socket parent. The Nginx worker must be able to read the site and connect to the PHP-FPM socket; PHP-FPM must be able to write only its approved directories.
- Attach the jail to the selected bridge and assign its private address. Confirm that the address, route and DNS behavior match the firewall policy.
- Start the logging mechanism if your chosen design requires one.
- Start PHP-FPM and verify that the expected socket appears inside the jail.
- Start Nginx with the jail-visible configuration and validate its configuration before accepting traffic.
- Keep the sandbox process supervised. The reference walkthrough uses
sleep infto keep a manually launched jail alive; use a real service supervisor for production so crashes, restarts and shutdown ordering are explicit.
Run firejail --list from an administrative context to confirm that the expected sandbox exists. Record the sandbox PID, profile path, network address and service status as part of deployment diagnostics.

Network policy for WordPress features
WordPress’s network requirements are separate decisions, not one permission switch.
| Traffic | Reason | Policy question |
|---|---|---|
| DNS | Resolve the database, update services and APIs | Which resolver is reachable, and is it restricted to the bridge? |
| Database | Read and write site data | Is only the database address and port allowed? |
| Outbound HTTPS | Core/plugin/theme updates and external integrations | Can egress be limited to required destinations, or must an allow-list be maintained? |
| SMTP | Site mail and password resets | Is direct SMTP required, or should mail go through a local relay? |
| Inbound HTTP/HTTPS | Public and administrative requests | Does the host firewall expose only the proxy or load balancer? |
Test each path from inside the sandbox. An update failure may be DNS, TLS trust, an egress rule, proxy configuration or a read-only code directory; treating all failures as “Firejail blocking WordPress” hides the actual fix. If a plugin requires an external API, document its hostname and port before granting access.
Test confinement and WordPress functionality
Prove that denied files are really denied
The profile guide demonstrates a simple confinement test: place a test file in a protected directory and attempt to read it from the sandbox. Adapt that method to your host and remove the test file afterward. Test both read and write behavior for sensitive paths, because a profile that blocks reads but permits writes can still be dangerous.
- Attempt to read a host file that is outside the approved filesystem view.
- Attempt to write to the WordPress code tree, host home directories and system configuration.
- Attempt to create files only in the uploads and temporary directories intended to be writable.
- Confirm that unexpected host processes are not visible through the sandbox’s PID view.
- Verify that the jail cannot reach network segments outside its documented routes.
Exercise every WordPress workflow
- Load the public home page and a permalink that requires front-controller routing.
- Sign in to the administrator dashboard and save a setting.
- Upload an image, generate thumbnails and confirm that the file lands in the intended uploads directory.
- Install or update a plugin and a theme in a staging copy. If code is read-only by design, perform deployment outside the web process instead.
- Run the site’s scheduled-task mechanism and inspect its logs. Test both traffic-triggered cron and the separate scheduler if you use one.
- Send a password-reset or contact message through the configured mail path.
- Exercise any external API, object storage, cache, payment or editorial integration.
- Restart the jail and verify that sockets, logs, permissions and network identity are recreated in the correct order.
- Restore a backup to a separate test instance and confirm that the recovery process does not require unplanned host access.
Remove any profile exception that these tests did not justify. Repeat the test suite after every change to the profile, PHP version, plugin set, Nginx package or host kernel.
Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 502 Bad Gateway | Nginx cannot reach PHP-FPM | Socket path inside the jail, parent-directory permissions, PHP-FPM startup order and matching FastCGI configuration. |
| Uploads fail or image sizes are missing | Uploads or temporary directory is read-only or absent | Writable path, ownership, PHP upload limits and available space in the jail. |
| Updates cannot download | DNS, TLS trust, egress policy or proxy failure | Resolver files, CA bundle, bridge routes and the destination allow-list from inside the sandbox. |
| Permalinks return 404 | Front-controller rule or document root mismatch | try_files, index.php, rewrite configuration and the path visible inside the jail. |
| PHP cannot connect to the database | Wrong private address, credentials or network route | Database bind address, account host restriction, DNS and firewall rules for the jail’s fixed address. |
| Logs are empty | Log files or logging socket are hidden | Explicit log paths, ownership, startup order and the host collector configuration. |
| Scheduled tasks never run | No scheduler is inside the jail or its command lacks required paths | Chosen cron mechanism, PHP binary path, WordPress root and profile visibility. |
| Service starts manually but not under systemd | Namespace, socket or readiness assumptions differ | ExecStart profile path, user, environment, restart policy and ordering dependencies. |
Security controls around Firejail’s SUID design
Firejail warns that its SUID design can be dangerous on multiuser systems. Reduce that exposure according to the documented controls for your installed version:
- Use an allow-list of users permitted to invoke Firejail.
- Place approved accounts in a dedicated
firejailgroup rather than granting broad access. - Consider
force-nonewprivsinfirejail.configwhere it is compatible with the services you run. - Keep the Firejail package and kernel patched, and review changes to SUID ownership and permissions after upgrades.
- Do not grant the web account administrative access to the host, Docker socket, backup credentials or unrelated service data.
Capabilities, seccomp filters, device visibility and additional restrictions should be tightened only after the functional test suite passes. A policy that prevents PHP-FPM from starting is not safer in practice if operators disable it permanently to restore service.

Updates, backups and recovery
Separate code deployment from runtime writes when possible. Keep WordPress core, themes and plugins in a versioned deployment artifact, expose uploads as the primary runtime-writable content, and make wp-config.php readable but not writable by PHP. If administrators must update code through the dashboard, grant the minimum temporary write access, perform the update in a controlled window, then return the tree to its normal policy.
Back up both the database and the uploads directory. A backup job should read through an explicitly approved path or run outside the web jail; never solve backup failures by exposing the host’s entire filesystem. Test restoration with the same profile and network restrictions so recovery does not depend on permissions unavailable during an incident.
When to use a different isolation design
| Design | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Firejail web jail | Fast, profile-driven reduction of filesystem, process, syscall and network exposure for existing binaries. | Requires careful profile maintenance; SUID and host-kernel trust remain important. |
| Chroot alone | Simple alternate filesystem root. | Does not by itself provide the namespace, syscall and process isolation that Firejail adds; privileges and device access still need controls. |
| Private network without filesystem isolation | Limits reachable services. | Does not stop a compromised PHP process reading or modifying host files it can access. |
| Separate VM or container service | Stronger service boundary and independent lifecycle. | More image, patching, storage and orchestration work; the application still needs least privilege inside the guest or container. |
Choose the design that your team can patch, monitor and recover. Firejail is most useful when you want a narrow policy around an existing Nginx/PHP-FPM installation and can maintain the profile as the application changes.
Quick Recap
Production checklist
- Web and database services have separate boundaries and credentials.
- The selected profile is explicit, version-controlled and reviewed after generation or package updates.
- Only the document root, uploads, runtime socket, logs, temporary area and required read-only system data are visible.
- Writable paths are limited to those required by tested workflows.
- The bridge address, routes, DNS, database access and outbound destinations are documented and filtered.
- Nginx, PHP-FPM and the logging mechanism start in a supervised order.
- Administration, media, updates, permalinks, cron, mail, integrations and restart behavior have been tested inside the jail.
firejail --listshows the expected running sandbox, and a deliberate protected-file test confirms confinement.- Firejail’s SUID controls, host patching, TLS, WordPress updates, database privileges, backups and recovery drills are maintained independently of the profile.
