Do Minecraft Fish Farms Give XP?

Successful fishing catches award 1–6 XP, but a farm that only collects fish does not automatically give its player XP.

Yes—successful fishing catches award the player who reels them in 1–6 XP, according to the Minecraft Wiki fishing reference. A farm that gathers fish or other drops does not automatically give you XP: it must produce successful catches for your fishing player.

When does a fish farm award XP?

The XP event is the successful catch and reel-in, not the later storage or collection of the item. The fishing reference says an orb worth 1–6 XP appears at the fishing player’s position for each successful catch. A hopper moving fish into a chest is item collection; it does not, by itself, trigger that XP award.

So the useful question about a particular farm is whether its operation results in catches being reeled in by your player. A design that collects loot without producing that player catch event should not be assumed to be an XP farm.

How much XP can fishing provide?

The documented amount is 1–6 XP per successful catch—not per minute or hour. Your total depends on how often the farm produces successful catches and whether some of the XP is used to repair equipped Mending items.

The Minecraft Wiki experience-farming tutorial gives an example outdoor setup with an enchanted rod averaging 8 catches and 28 XP per minute. That is a guide estimate for that setup, not an official benchmark or a guaranteed rate for other farms. Catch frequency and XP retained vary with the rod, conditions, farm behavior, and Mending gear.

What affects catch frequency and XP?

Rod enchantments

  • Lure reduces the wait before a catch, so it can affect how often catches happen. The official Minecraft fishing-rod guide and Microsoft Learn Bedrock enchantment documentation describe this effect.
  • Luck of the Sea improves fishing loot odds, increasing the chance of treasure and reducing junk. The cited guides do not say it increases XP per catch.
  • Mending uses experience to repair an item. If a rod or other equipped item has Mending, some of the fishing XP may go toward repairs instead of remaining with you.

Weather

Rain can reduce fishing wait time, according to the official fishing-rod guide. This can affect catch frequency; it does not change the cited 1–6 XP award for an individual successful catch.

Do old AFK fish farms still work?

Java Edition has a version-specific constraint for treasure fishing. The fish-farming tutorial records that snapshot 20w12a changed treasure eligibility to require the bobber to be in an open-water area at least 5×5×4. That change broke older compact AFK designs that relied on the previous treasure behavior. It concerns treasure eligibility; it does not mean every older design stops producing XP from successful catches.

Do not assume a Java design works the same way in Bedrock, or that a farm tutorial applies to every game version. Compatibility can depend on edition, version, input method, and the exact bobber and redstone arrangement. A farm’s ability to gather loot and its ability to award XP are also separate questions.

Is fishing a good XP farm?

Fishing can provide XP, but it is generally a slow and conditional source rather than a guaranteed fast-leveling method. Judge a build by its successful catch rate and the XP you keep, not simply by how many items it collects. The cited figures do not establish a directly comparable rate for other XP methods, so they are not enough to rank fishing against other farms.
