If the box contains a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game card, Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack are on that same card—not supplied as a separate download code. There is an exception: some publishers may sell a boxed product containing only a download code, with no game card. Check the exact game’s listing and packaging before buying.
Does the Switch 2 Edition come with a download code?
Not when it is released as a physical game card, according to Nintendo of America’s Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ. Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack are included together on the same card.

But “physical” packaging does not guarantee there is a card inside. Nintendo notes that some publishers may release Switch 2 Edition games in physical packaging as download codes, with no game card. Check the specific edition’s product listing and the package contents; the rule about the same card applies to the game-card release format, not every boxed product.
Is the upgrade pack on the cartridge?
Yes, for a physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game-card release: Nintendo says the base Nintendo Switch game and upgrade pack are on the same card. It is not a separate code that you must redeem to add the Switch 2 Edition upgrade.

Nintendo names The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as an example. Its Expansion Pass DLC is not included with that edition and is sold separately, so the upgrade pack should not be confused with additional DLC.
What if I already own the original Switch game?
Nintendo Support’s upgrade-pack information says owners of the original game, whether physical or digital, can purchase or download an upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailers. That is a separate route from buying the Switch 2 Edition game card. Prices and specific retailer availability are not established here, so check the current listing for your game and region.

How is a Game-Key Card different?
A Game-Key Card is a separate download-dependent format, not the same thing as a physical Switch 2 Edition game card. Nintendo says a Game-Key Card does not contain the full game data. You need an internet connection and enough free internal or microSD Express storage to download the game; after downloading, you can start it without internet, but the Game-Key Card must remain inserted to play. See Nintendo’s FAQ and its Game-Key Card support article for the format details.
| Format | What is included | Download and play requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Switch 2 Edition game card | Nintendo says the Switch game and upgrade pack are on the same card. | The stated download and storage requirements for Game-Key Cards do not apply to this format. |
| Boxed download code | A code in physical packaging; no game card, for releases that use this option. | Redeem and download the game; check the product listing for details. |
| Game-Key Card | The full game data is not on the card. | Internet and sufficient storage are needed for the initial download; the card must be inserted to play. |
Will a Switch 2 Edition card work on the original Switch?
Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition game card can run the Nintendo Switch version on an original Nintendo Switch. The Switch 2-specific features and enhancements are unavailable on that console.

What to check before you buy
- Look for an explicit statement that the package contains a game card, rather than assuming every boxed release does.
- If it is a game card, Nintendo’s stated format puts the Switch game and upgrade pack together on that card.
- If the listing says Game-Key Card, expect to download the game and ensure you have enough storage.
- If you already own the original game, check whether an upgrade pack is offered for that title and region.
- For Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, budget separately for the Expansion Pass if you want that DLC.
