No—not as a general rule. In the United States, Nintendo set Mario Kart World’s launch MSRP at $79.99 for both physical and digital copies in 2025. But Nintendo’s digital-pricing policy changed in May 2026: new Nintendo-published games exclusive to Switch 2 can have a digital MSRP different from the physical edition. Nintendo currently lists the digital version of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book at $59.99. So the answer to “Do Nintendo Switch 2 games cost $80 digitally?” depends on the title, format, seller and region.
Where the $80 claim came from
The claim was grounded in a real U.S. launch price, but it was never a universal digital-only price. In its April 18, 2025 announcement, Nintendo of America set Mario Kart World’s launch MSRP at $79.99 for both physical and digital versions. The same announcement set both formats of Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. These were launch MSRPs, not a promise that every Switch 2 game would cost the same or a statement of current retail prices. How Nintendo’s digital pricing policy works now
Starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, Nintendo says new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 have an MSRP different from their physical editions. That policy is limited to the titles and publisher Nintendo describes; it does not establish a price rule for every Switch 2 game or for third-party releases. Nintendo’s U.S. store currently shows a regular digital price of $59.99 for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The official sources cited here do not establish that game’s U.S. physical MSRP, so a precise format-price difference cannot be stated. Nintendo says its format-specific MSRP reflects costs associated with producing and distributing packaged and digital games. The company also says the gameplay experience is the same across its two formats. These are Nintendo’s explanations and product claims, rather than an independently quantified breakdown of production costs. For its broader software pricing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the company considers regional consumer price perceptions, exchange rates and market conditions, along with cost factors such as increased game-file sizes and longer development periods. He said Nintendo would continue to consider appropriate prices for each title. Nintendo’s May 2025 financial-results Q&A

MSRP is not necessarily the price you will pay
Nintendo states that retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and that prices may vary by title. Treat an announced MSRP as Nintendo’s suggested price, not a guarantee of what a particular store charges now. Check the current listing for the correct game, format and region before buying. A U.S. price announcement also should not be converted into a price expectation for another country: Nintendo’s April 2025 Japan announcement, for example, listed Mario Kart World at ¥8,980 digitally and a ¥9,980 physical MSRP, separate figures for that market. Price is one part of the comparison; digital access is tied to a Nintendo Account and depends on console setup. Nintendo’s guidance says virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two consoles. On a console that cannot load the virtual game card, an online connection is required, and other users on that console cannot play that game.
