Yes—some Nintendo Switch platformers let two or more people play together on one console, but support and controller requirements vary by game. Nintendo confirms same-system play for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, each supporting up to four players. Check the specific game’s listing before buying.

Can you play Switch platformers with two players?
Yes, when the individual game supports same-console multiplayer. The examples above all allow at least two players on one system. Before choosing a game, check whether its local mode is cooperative or competitive and how many players it supports; the number alone does not tell you what playing together involves.
How many players can play Super Mario Bros. Wonder on one Switch?
Nintendo lists local play for up to four players on one system. Its multiplayer instructions distinguish that setup from online play and local wireless play. Local wireless involves multiple consoles, so it is not the same arrangement as a group sharing one Switch.

Do you need extra Joy-Cons for local multiplayer?
It depends on the game and on how many suitable controllers your group already has. Nintendo says one Joy-Con is enough for one player in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, but also warns that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer. That warning applies to this title; it does not establish the controller requirements for every platformer.
- Count the controllers available to your players.
- Check the game’s listing for supported player modes and controller guidance.
- Verify compatibility and what hardware is included before purchasing additional controllers.
What to check before buying
- Open the Nintendo listing for the specific game and confirm its single-system player count.
- Check whether the local mode is co-op, competitive, or offers both.
- Review the controller notes and compare them with the controllers your group has.
- Make sure the listing describes the setup you want: one shared console, multiple consoles nearby, or online play.
The examples here are representative, not a complete catalogue of Switch platformers. Listings and accessory compatibility may vary by region or change, so check the current information for the edition you plan to buy.
