If controls feel delayed in a Nintendo Switch platformer, first check whether it happens only on a TV, then test for intermittent wireless inputs, controller faults, and online lag. These problems have different causes, so start with the checks that do not require buying anything.
First identify when the delay happens
Notice whether the problem occurs only in TV Mode, also happens in handheld mode, appears as intermittent or missed inputs, or shows up only during online play. A consistent pause between pressing a button and seeing the result points to a different troubleshooting path than inputs that drop out or online characters that jump around.

If it happens only in TV Mode, check the television
A television processes the Switch’s signal before displaying the image and audio. That processing can make controls feel delayed without indicating that the console or controller is defective. Nintendo recommends checking the TV manual for Game Mode or a similar setting, which may shorten the processing time. The setting’s name and availability vary by TV model.

If wireless inputs are intermittent, check charge and placement
When inputs occasionally fail or arrive inconsistently, check the wireless setup before replacing the controller. Nintendo recommends charging Joy-Con, moving closer to the console, and keeping the console in an open location. A console behind a TV, under or against metal, or crowded by cables can have a less reliable wireless connection.
Nintendo also identifies nearby wireless devices as possible sources of interference. Keep the console away from devices such as wireless speakers, cordless phones, microwaves, laptops or tablets, printers, headsets, and USB 3.0 devices. Nintendo advises keeping these devices three to four feet away where possible. After each adjustment, retry the same action in the game.

Test whether the issue follows the controller or the game
- On the Switch, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Test Input Devices.
- Use the on-screen test to check the buttons and inputs involved in the problem.
- Try the controller in another compatible game.
- If the problem occurs in only one game, check that game’s controller compatibility and in-game control settings.
If an input does not register during the test, or controller symptoms seriously affect play, Nintendo says service may be appropriate. A replacement should not be the first assumption: these checks can help distinguish a controller-specific problem from a game setting or TV delay.

Optional: test a Pro Controller over USB in TV Mode
Nintendo supports wired communication for a Pro Controller in TV Mode. To try it, connect the controller to the dock with a USB charging cable, then enable System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Pro Controller Wired Communication. The console must be on system version 3.0.0 or later. NFC cannot be used while the cable is connected. This setup does not apply to Switch Lite.

This is an optional way to test or use a wired connection, not a guaranteed fix for perceived lag. If the delay comes from TV processing, connecting the controller by cable does not address that cause.

If the symptom is characters jumping around or responding slowly during online play, network transmission delay may be involved. Nintendo lists slow internet speeds, weak wireless signal, interference, and slow network devices among possible causes. Its online troubleshooting guidance recommends testing after each change.

A wired internet connection can address the network path, but it will not correct local delay caused by the television processing the Switch’s signal. First establish whether the problem is limited to online play or remains when playing locally.
