Some Nintendo Switch games run more steadily or load faster on Nintendo Switch 2, but the gains vary by game and are not guaranteed across the library. Nintendo confirms that it found faster loading or more stable performance in some titles; a June 2025 comparison reported sizable improvements in several specific games.
Why some original Switch games can improve
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but it does not simply contain the original Switch hardware. Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta said the new console converts game data in real time as it is read. In Nintendo’s testing, “there were some where loading times became faster, or game performance became more stable.” That is a selective benefit, not a promise that every game will run faster or at a higher frame rate. Nintendo’s developer interview explains the approach.

Compatibility and performance are separate questions: a game may launch on Switch 2 without receiving a dedicated Switch 2 Edition, and its results may differ from another game. Nintendo warns that some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible. Check the current title-specific compatibility information before buying a game on the assumption that it will work.
What the reported comparisons show
Notebookcheck’s June 6, 2025 comparison reported the following results for particular games and tasks. These are examples from that report, not a whole-library benchmark or a guarantee for every play session.

All figures in the table are attributed to Notebookcheck’s June 6, 2025 report. The frame-rate descriptions refer to the reported scenes, while each loading figure applies only to its named task. They should not be generalized to other games or used to infer a single performance uplift for the Switch catalog.
Backward compatibility versus a Switch 2 Edition
There are two different ways an older game can benefit, and it matters which one applies:

- Original Switch game through backward compatibility: The existing game runs on Switch 2 if it is compatible. It may load faster or perform more steadily, but those gains depend on the title and do not require a Switch 2 Edition by definition.
- Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack: A specific edition or upgrade can add named improvements, extra content, or both. Nintendo lists faster loading and improvements to frame rate and resolution for its Zelda editions. Some upgrade packs are paid, some are free, and some are included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, subject to an active membership and owning the game. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 upgrade-pack information for the relevant title and terms.
Do not assume that owning the original game automatically grants edition-specific features. Check the game’s listing to see whether an upgrade is offered, what it changes, and whether it costs extra.

- Confirm compatibility. Look up the exact game in Nintendo’s compatibility information; general support for Switch games does not mean every title is fully compatible.
- Identify the version you will play. Determine whether you are launching the original Switch release or a Switch 2 Edition, and whether an upgrade pack is required for the features you want.
- Look for evidence tied to your concern. If loading is the issue, seek a result for the same loading task; if performance is the issue, look for the same game and a comparable demanding scene. A reported improvement in one title is not evidence about another.
- Read the evidence type carefully. A measured comparison and a staff member’s play impression are not interchangeable. Nintendo Life’s feature, for example, collects staff observations across 33 games, including reports of smoother play or faster loading; those are editorial experiences, not standardized benchmark results. Nintendo Life’s 33-game feature provides those attributed observations.
No broad, controlled percentage uplift for the entire Switch library is established by these sources. The useful question is whether the specific game and scenario you care about have documented results, and whether those results concern backward compatibility or a dedicated upgrade.
