Do PEGI Games Work in the US? Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox Compatibility

PEGI games can work in the US, but compatibility depends on the console and edition. Nintendo confirms Switch and Switch 2 can play PEGI-rated games, with region and DLC caveats.

Sometimes—it depends on the console, generation, and game. PEGI is an age and content rating, not a universal compatibility label. Nintendo explicitly says Switch 2 and Switch can play PEGI-rated games. For PlayStation and Xbox, the available guidance does not support a blanket yes or no for every console and title.

What a PEGI rating tells you—and what it doesn’t

PEGI describes a game’s age suitability and content, such as violence or nudity. It does not tell you whether a disc or cartridge will run on a particular console. PlayStation says the rating reflects content and its intensity, not difficulty or playability. PEGI ratings can also vary by title, platform, and edition; check the specific entry in the PEGI game database.

In the US and Canada, Nintendo says games sold physically display ESRB ratings on the box, and digital Nintendo Store and eShop listings show ratings before purchase. Nintendo also says Switch and Switch 2 parental controls can use a selected rating organization, including PEGI. A PEGI mark on an imported copy is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the game is incompatible or compatible.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: PEGI games can play, with caveats

Nintendo’s official guidance is direct: “Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch are not region locked so it is possible to play games not rated by the ESRB (e.g., games rated by CERO and PEGI).” That supports playing PEGI-rated games on these consoles, but it is not a guarantee that every overseas release will work or receive full support.

  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles

  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked, except for Chinese-region products. It also cautions that it has not tested all overseas software with consoles from every region and cannot guarantee full service and support. Chinese-region consoles and games are not compatible with products distributed in the Americas. See Nintendo’s ESRB organization overview and Switch regional compatibility FAQ.

Check DLC and language before buying

A game may run while its add-ons do not. Nintendo says DLC only works with games released for the same region as the DLC. Before buying an imported Switch game, check the game’s edition and language, and whether you intend to use DLC or in-game purchases. If those details are not clear on the listing or packaging, confirm them with the publisher.

PlayStation: separate disc play from add-on compatibility

PlayStation’s rating information explains PEGI’s role—it is used throughout the EU except Germany, which has its own rating system—but does not establish that every PEGI PlayStation disc works on every US PlayStation model. Check the exact console, game edition, and publisher guidance rather than relying on the rating symbol.

For add-ons, region matters: PlayStation says a disc-game add-on cannot be used if its licensed region does not match the disc’s region. PlayStation Store content also varies by country or region. Check the disc’s region information and the game packaging’s small print, then make sure the add-on is for that same licensed region. See PlayStation’s ratings and parental controls information and account country/region guidance.

Xbox: verify the exact console and game

The official information available here does not settle whether PEGI-rated Xbox physical discs work across US Xbox consoles and generations. Do not infer compatibility from the PEGI label or from Nintendo’s Switch guidance. Check current official Xbox support or the publisher’s page for the precise console model and game edition before purchasing.

Use this checklist for an imported game

  1. Identify the platform and generation. Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation, and Xbox have different compatibility rules; the precise console model can matter.
  2. Confirm the format and edition. A physical card or disc and a digital purchase can have different region considerations. Check the exact release, not just the game title.
  3. Check language and region details. Look for supported languages, licensed region, and publisher notes on the listing or packaging.
  4. Match add-ons to the game. For Nintendo, DLC must match the game’s region. On PlayStation, the add-on’s licensed region must match the disc’s region.
  5. Check support expectations. Nintendo warns that it has not tested every overseas Switch release with every console region and cannot guarantee full service and support.
