Yes. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) says real-money trading (RMT) can get you banned in Path of Exile. Its rules prohibit buying or selling items and accounts for real money or external currencies, and its Terms of Use also prohibit providing in-game services for compensation outside PoE.
What counts as RMT under GGG’s rules?
GGG’s Terms of Use permit virtual-item trades for personal, non-commercial purposes through the game’s mechanisms and official APIs. They separately prohibit performing in-game services for compensation outside Path of Exile.
GGG’s RMT/External Trading Policy clarifies that the ban covers real money and external currencies, including Forum Gold. Its examples include:
- Offering money or an external currency for another player’s items or account.
- Asking for something other than PoE items in exchange for gear in a trade thread.
- Advertising external item-sale websites.
- Running a service that sells items or accounts for compensation other than PoE items.
The key distinction is the compensation and purpose: an ordinary personal trade using GGG-provided mechanisms is different from an exchange for money, external currency, or another form of outside compensation.

Can you get banned for buying currency or items?
Yes. Buying items or accounts for money or external currency falls within the official policy. Selling PoE items for real money is also prohibited. The policy states that GGG will ban people who attempt RMT in-game or on the official forums.
A GGG staff reply from August 17, 2015, also described selling in-game items for real money as a bannable breach of the Terms. That reply is historical confirmation; it does not establish how often bans happen today.

Can paying someone to level your character get you banned?
It can, if the arrangement is an in-game service paid for with compensation outside PoE. The current Terms explicitly prohibit performing in-game services for outside compensation. Ordinary help exchanged within PoE is not the same as paying an external fee or currency for a service.
GGG’s account-security post from February 8, 2013, warns that sharing account details with a power-leveling service can expose items to theft and may lead to a ban if the service accesses the account. That post is old, so it should not be treated as a description of GGG’s current security systems.

What does GGG say it can do to an account?
The Terms say GGG may cancel registration or restrict, limit, or change access if it believes a player has breached the Terms or engaged in conduct it considers inconsistent with the spirit of participation. They also say GGG need not provide advance notice or an explanation. This describes the authority GGG claims under its posted Terms; it does not establish whether a particular ban was factually correct or fair.
