Yes: Sony lists the original PlayStation controller, the original DUALSHOCK and the DUALSHOCK 2 as compatible with the PS2 model series in its compatibility table. For a standard PS2 setup, the DUALSHOCK 2 (SCPH-10010) is the straightforward choice. PS3, PS4 and PS5 controllers are not listed as native PS2 controllers; using one requires a compatible adapter.
Which PlayStation controllers work on PS2?
Sony’s compatibility table lists three controller types across the PS2 series it covers: the DUALSHOCK 2 (SCPH-10010), the earlier DUALSHOCK (SCPH-110 / SCPH-1200), and the original PlayStation controller (SCPH-1010 / SCPH-1080). For a conventional PS2 controller
The DUALSHOCK 2 is Sony’s listed PS2 controller. If you are choosing a controller specifically for a PS2, it is the simplest match.

If you already own a PS1 controller
Sony also lists the original PlayStation controller and original DUALSHOCK as compatible with the PS2 model series above, so you can use one rather than buying a DUALSHOCK 2.

Can you use a PS3, PS4 or PS5 controller on PS2?
Not as a controller Sony lists for native PS2 use. Sony’s current controller support information does not identify the PS2 as a supported console for DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. Check Sony’s controller support information.
For newer controller families, Brook documents the Wingman PS2 as an adapter for the PS2 and lists PS3, PS4 and PS5 controllers among the supported families. See Brook’s Wingman PS2 details. Will any USB gamepad work if I plug it into the PS2?
Do not assume so. The presence of USB ports does not establish that a generic USB gamepad will work directly. Sony’s compatibility table lists keyboards and mice separately from the controller models that use the PS2 controller ports; it does not certify general USB gamepad support. Sony’s accessory table.

Sony’s table establishes compatibility at the controller and PS2 model-series level, not for every game or every feature. Individual games can differ in their controller requirements and how they use buttons or other controller functions, so the table should not be read as a promise of identical behavior in every title.
