No: an original PlayStation 2 game disc cannot be played on a PS4. Sony says the PS4 does not support backward compatibility for PS2 games, and its safety guide specifically excludes PS2-format software from disc playback. Some PS2-era games were released separately as PS4 digital games, but those releases do not let the console read an original PS2 disc.
Can you put a PS2 disc in a PS4?
No. Sony’s North America PlayStation FAQ says, “No, PS4 does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.” Sony’s PS4 safety guide also states that PlayStation 2 format software cannot be played from disc.
This is a software-format limitation, not a problem that can be fixed with a display accessory. A PS2-to-HDMI adapter may help connect a PS2 console to a modern screen, but it does not make a PS4 run PS2-format games.
Can you play any PS2 games on a PS4?
Yes, some PS2-era titles were released as separate PS4 products through PlayStation Store. These are PS4 versions of selected games, not backward compatibility: the PS4 runs the PS4 release rather than reading a PS2 disc.

Which PS2 games did Sony announce for PS4?
In December 2015, Sony announced an initial group of eight PS2 games for PS4:
Rank #2
- Incredible games; Endless entertainment.
- All new lighter slimmer PS4
- 1 TB hard drive
- Blu-ray technology, delivers exceptional video quality.
- Redefine your gaming expectations and immerse yourself in moments so intense your intuition takes over.
- Dark Cloud
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Rogue Galaxy
- The Mark of Kri
- War of the Monsters
- Twisted Metal: Black
Sony’s 2015 announcement described those releases as up-rendered to 1080p and noted Trophy support and other PS4 features. That is a historical announcement, not confirmation that every title remains available to buy today.
What should you do if you own a PS2 disc?
| Your goal | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play the original PS2 disc | Use a PlayStation 2 console. | The PS4 does not play PS2 game software from disc. |
| Play that game on a PS4 | Search the regional PlayStation Store for a separate PS4 release of the exact title. | Only selected games received PS4 releases; availability depends on the title and region. |
| Connect a PS2 to a newer TV | Use an appropriate display connection or adapter with the PS2. | A display converter does not make the game compatible with PS4. |
Why do DVD playback and PS2 game compatibility differ?
The PS4 safety guide lists certain DVD media among playable formats, but it separately excludes PlayStation 2 game software from disc playback. A PS2 game disc is not playable on a PS4 simply because the console can read some DVDs.
