Yes—but not because they are automatically stronger. In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the selected racer and Machine together determine overall stats, so choosing a crossover character is a gameplay decision rather than a purely cosmetic one. The exact differences between guest racers are not established by a complete, current official stat chart, so no crossover character can be responsibly called the best from the available data.
Gadgets make the build system even more consequential. SEGA says players can tailor six-Gadget loadouts, and director Shingo Kawakami explains that the team made Gadgets powerful enough to significantly affect how races unfold. Your result therefore depends on the interaction between racer, Machine and Gadgets—not on the character model alone.

What a crossover character changes
The clearest official rule appears in SEGA’s online manual: a racer’s character and Machine determine the game’s overall stats. That means the character slot is part of the performance calculation. A guest racer is not merely a visual skin layered over an identical statistical template, at least according to the system description.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That rule answers the basic question, but it does not answer every comparison a player might want to make. The manual page did not expose a complete character-by-character table in the available material, and the current live roster can change as updates arrive. There is consequently no reliable basis for saying that one named crossover racer has the highest speed, best handling or greatest boost potential.

The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: changing racers can change the overall stat profile of a build, while the size and direction of the difference must be checked against current in-game information. Treat a crossover selection as one input to a setup, not as a guaranteed advantage.
Why the Machine still matters
Character statistics are only half of the explicitly identified base calculation. The same manual statement pairs the character with the Machine, so changing the vehicle can alter the resulting profile even when the racer stays the same. A player who moves from a guest racer to a Sonic-universe racer, or vice versa, should assess the complete racer-and-Machine combination rather than judging the character in isolation.
This also means that a character who looks less suitable on one Machine may fit a different Machine better. Without a published, current numerical chart, it is more accurate to think in terms of trade-offs than a permanent tier list. A build focused on a particular racing style can use the Machine to complement the character’s stat tendencies, but the game-specific values need to come from the current game interface or an updated official source.
Gadgets can swing a race
Gadgets add a separate layer of effects on top of the racer-and-Machine stats. SEGA describes six-Gadget loadouts that players can tailor to their strategy. Its 2025 developer interview with director Shingo Kawakami gives the design intent: “However, to truly bring out the game’s uniqueness, we decided to make them powerful enough to significantly impact how races unfold.” The statement is about Gadgets, not crossover characters, so it should not be read as proof that any particular guest racer has a special ability. It does establish that equipment choices are intended to have material race consequences.

SEGA’s September 2025 launch communication lists more than 70 Gadgets and more than 70,000 Machine combinations as product figures. Those numbers are published by SEGA, not independent performance measurements. They illustrate why a character-only ranking would be incomplete: even if two racers have different base profiles, a six-Gadget loadout and Machine selection can substantially change how each setup performs in an actual race.
How the three parts of a build interact
- Character: contributes to the overall statistics identified in the online manual.
- Machine: contributes alongside the character and can change the resulting stat balance.
- Gadgets: provide additional effects; SEGA says six can be tailored to a racing strategy and that their impact can be significant.
Because these layers interact, “Do guest characters have different stats?” and “Are crossover characters cosmetic?” are related but not identical questions. The available official information supports a gameplay effect from character selection, yet it does not disclose the exact numerical gap between every guest racer or prove that those gaps outweigh every Machine and Gadget decision.
What is known—and not known—about guest-racer differences
| Question | What the official material establishes | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| Does the character slot affect performance? | The online manual says character and Machine determine overall stats. | The complete current values for every racer. |
| Can Gadgets change race outcomes? | SEGA says six-Gadget loadouts can be tailored to strategy; its director says Gadgets were made powerful enough to significantly affect races. | A universal ranking of Gadget combinations or a measured advantage for a specific racer. |
| Is one crossover racer objectively best? | No official source supplied here establishes that conclusion. | Reliable, current head-to-head data for named crossover characters. |
| Are all crossover racers free? | Some announced guest racers were free updates, while other crossover content was sold through the Season Pass. | The current availability and price of every item in every region and edition. |
This distinction protects players from two common mistakes. First, “different stats” does not automatically mean “pay-to-win” or “strictly superior.” Second, a free-update guest racer is not necessarily statistically weaker than a paid one; the announcements identify distribution, not a competitive ranking.
Free updates and paid crossover content are different paths
Crossover availability has changed over time, and the announcement dates matter. On June 9, 2025, SEGA announced that Hatsune Miku, Joker from Persona 5 Royal and Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon would arrive as racers through free updates. The same announcement described Minecraft crossover content as Season Pass DLC, including racers, a themed Machine and a course. Read the details in SEGA’s June 9, 2025 announcement.

SEGA’s September 25, 2025 launch announcement said Mega Man would appear in Season Pass Wave 4 and described Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN crossover characters as premium DLC. The announcement is available at SEGA’s September 25, 2025 release page. These are dated announcements, not a guarantee that every item has the same release status, price or regional availability today.
| Announcement | Access route described by SEGA | Named content | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 9, 2025 | Free updates for the named racers; Minecraft described as Season Pass DLC. | Hatsune Miku, Joker, Ichiban Kasuga; Minecraft racers, Machine and course. | Shows that crossover content can be distributed through both free and paid channels. |
| September 25, 2025 | Season Pass Wave 4 for Mega Man; premium DLC description for other listed crossovers. | Mega Man, Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants and PAC-MAN. | Confirms additional paid crossover content in the launch-era plan, but not its current regional status. |
Before buying a Season Pass or an individual add-on, check the current store listing for your platform and region. Editions, release timing and included items can differ, and the supplied announcements do not verify today’s price, stock or a complete live roster.
How to choose a crossover racer without a tier list
If you want to know whether a particular guest racer fits your play style, evaluate the whole build rather than relying on a character’s fame or the fact that the content is paid. Use this process with the current values shown by your game version.
- Identify your goal. Decide whether you are prioritizing top speed, acceleration, handling, stability or a particular online-race strategy. A build optimized for one objective may be poor at another.
- Record the character’s current profile. Use the in-game stat display or the latest official information available for your platform. Do not substitute a launch-era community graphic for current values without checking its date.
- Pair the racer with a Machine. Because the manual treats character and Machine as a combined source of overall stats, compare complete pairings. Look for a Machine that addresses the weakness you care about, rather than assuming the default option is optimal.
- Plan all six Gadget slots. Gadgets are not a minor cosmetic attachment. Build a coherent loadout around your chosen race strategy, and remember that the director’s comments describe effects strong enough to influence race outcomes.
- Compare under the same conditions. If your edition provides a solo, practice or other repeatable test environment, use the same course, conditions and Gadget loadout when comparing two characters. Change one variable at a time so a Machine swap is not mistaken for a character effect.
- Recheck after updates. CrossWorlds launched in September 2025 and SEGA describes continuing updates and DLC. A patch, new Machine or Gadget can change which combination feels best, even if a character’s own stats remain unchanged.
This method produces a personal, current answer without pretending that an unavailable official chart exists. It is especially important for online play, where a setup that feels fast in a short course may be less effective when handling, recovery or Gadget timing matters more.

What the launch figures tell you about build complexity
SEGA’s September 2025 launch announcement describes 23 Sonic-universe characters in the launch-era roster, more than 70 Gadgets, more than 70,000 Machine combinations and World Match races for 12 players. These figures indicate the scale of the customization system, but they are not independent benchmarks and do not reveal the performance gap between any two crossover characters.
The 12-player World Match figure also explains why a small statistical preference may not translate directly into a win. In a crowded race, route decisions, item or Gadget timing and recovery from contact can matter alongside raw attributes. That does not make character choice irrelevant; it means the character’s contribution should be evaluated as part of a complete plan.

“Guest racers are only costumes.”
The official manual’s character-and-Machine rule contradicts a purely cosmetic interpretation. Character selection is part of the overall-stat calculation, although the available material does not show how large each guest racer’s difference is.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

“The most expensive crossover must be strongest.”
Distribution and performance are separate issues. SEGA’s announcements identify free updates and Season Pass content, but they do not establish that paid racers have superior statistics. Price or access route is not evidence of competitive strength.

“A character ranking from launch is permanent.”
CrossWorlds is an updated game with announced DLC and continuing content. A launch-era ranking can become obsolete when the roster, Machines or Gadgets change, and no complete current official ranking is supplied here.
“Gadgets do not matter if the racer is fast.”
SEGA’s director specifically says Gadgets were made powerful enough to significantly affect races. Ignoring the six Gadget slots can erase the advantage you expected from a character’s base profile.
What to check before purchasing crossover content
- Confirm whether the item is part of the base game, a free update, a Season Pass wave or separate DLC.
- Check the platform and region. SEGA lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC stores, but edition and release details vary.
- Read the current store description for exactly what is included: racer, Machine, course or another combination.
- Look for the latest official roster or in-game listing before assuming an announced item is already available.
- Separate access from performance. The existence of a paid option does not establish a superior stat line.
The game’s product pages and announcements confirm physical and digital editions, but they do not establish a current universal price or retailer inventory. For a purchase decision, use the store attached to your own platform and verify the included content at checkout.
Bottom line for competitive and casual players
Crossover characters affect gameplay because the character contributes to the overall stats calculated with the Machine. That makes guest-racer selection meaningful for both casual builds and online competition. However, the official material available here does not provide a complete, current character stat chart, so it cannot support a definitive ranking or a claim that any named crossover racer is objectively best.
The practical answer is to choose a racer, Machine and six-Gadget loadout as one build; test comparable setups under the same conditions; and recheck the result after updates. Free-update and paid crossover characters can coexist, and their access route says nothing by itself about their strength. For the latest availability, consult SEGA’s launch announcement, crossover announcement and online manual.
