Sometimes—but being spotted does not always mean instant failure. In the official game manuals and support documentation discussed here, discovery can start a temporary search, leave a lasting mark on a mission rating, raise the risk of an alarm-driven abort, or end the run immediately if the mode makes detection fatal. The right question is not only “Was I seen?” but also “How serious was the alert, can I recover, and what rules does this mission use?” These examples explain possible consequences; they are not a representative survey of all stealth games, so they cannot establish which penalty is most common.
What counts as getting caught?
Stealth games can treat awareness as a sequence of states rather than a simple choice between hidden and failed. A glimpse, a suspicious sound, an active search, a confirmed sighting and a full combat alert may each trigger different responses. A character who briefly suspects something may investigate and then calm down; a confirmed sighting may bring backup, alter the mission’s evaluation or satisfy a fail condition.

That difference matters when deciding whether to continue. A suspicion cue is not necessarily proof that the game has recorded a failure, while a full alert may create new risks even if the mission remains playable. Look for the game’s specific alert indicators and rules: they tell you whether you need to break line of sight, wait, hide, change your approach or restart.

- Threshold: Does a glimpse or suspicious noise count, or does the rule require a confirmed sighting?
- Immediate response: Do enemies investigate, search, attack, call for help or trigger an alarm?
- Recovery: Can you break line of sight, wait out a timer, hide, change disguise or otherwise reduce the alert?
- Persistence: Does the incident affect a rating, patrols, disguise status or the chance of completing the objective?
- Fail condition: Does discovery itself end the attempt, or is failure tied to a particular mode, alarm or objective?
Challenge rules and run context matter too. A standard mission and a one-chance contract in the same game can attach different consequences to a mistake.

When discovery is a recoverable alert
In the Xbox version of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Version online manual, enemy alert is described as a phase that can end in evasion rather than immediate failure. Once enemies lose sight of the player, a countdown begins; evade successfully and the game returns to infiltration. While alert is active, however, enemies call for backup and attack. Getting away from the immediate sightline therefore begins recovery, but it does not make the alert harmless.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty has a more explicitly graduated description in its PC Master Collection Version online manual. Its alert states include normal, alert, evasion and caution. Caution means enemies patrol with heightened alert, and some locations may have more guards than usual. Losing sight of the player can thus move the game out of active pursuit without instantly restoring the original conditions.
These examples distinguish two meanings of “caught”: an enemy can detect you and provoke a dangerous response, yet the ordinary game state may still allow you to escape and continue. The useful signal is what happens after contact ends—whether a countdown starts, the game returns to infiltration, or patrols remain more vigilant.

When the mode makes discovery an immediate failure
Metal Gear Solid 2 also shows why a game title alone is not enough to predict the penalty. Its manual says that during missions in Sneaking Mode, or when “GAME OVER IF DISCOVERED” is selected in the main game, an enemy or surveillance camera spotting the player ends the game immediately. The same game therefore supports both recoverable alert behavior and a discovery-equals-game-over rule, depending on the mode or selected setting.
Before treating a sighting as recoverable, check the mission briefing, challenge description or settings for language that makes discovery fatal. In a strict mode, trying to wait out an alert is the wrong response: the fail condition has already been met. In a normal mission with an evasion state, by contrast, breaking contact may be exactly what the game expects. The distinction is not cosmetic; it changes whether a mistake costs time and resources or ends the attempt.
When you can continue but the mistake still counts
Recovery does not necessarily erase the consequence. The Feral Interactive HITMAN manual describes states including Searching, Compromised, Hunted and Combat. If the alert is Unconscious Witness, Compromised, Hunted or Combat, changing into an uncompromised disguise lowers the alert level to Searching. That is a way to reduce pressure, not a guarantee that the incident never happened.

HITMAN also separates staying alive from earning a clean evaluation. Its rating criteria include a “Never Spotted” condition and whether bodies were found; the manual also says the game records noticed kills and video evidence. A player may therefore complete an objective after detection and still lose credit for a clean run. This is a persistent performance consequence rather than an automatic mission failure.

The manual gives Elusive Targets separate, stricter run rules: once objectives begin, the contract cannot be restarted, and dying fails the contract. That makes the cost of a risky recovery attempt different from the cost in an ordinary mission. The lesson is to read the rules of the specific contract instead of assuming every mission offers the same reset options.
When alarms threaten the objective
The Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell manual describes detection as an operational risk that can escalate. An enemy who detects Sam or suspects an intruder is trained to alert comrades or trigger an alarm. The manual warns that indiscretion with alarms can lead Third Echelon to abort a mission.

This is not the same as saying that any detection automatically fails the mission. The stated abort risk is tied to alarms. A suspected intruder, an alarm being raised and an actual mission abort are distinct events; the player needs to know which has occurred before deciding whether the objective is still viable. Treating every suspicion cue as a fail state would be too pessimistic, while ignoring an alarm could be costly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Awareness can have several grades
Bethesda Support describes four NPC detection levels, ranging from a brief glimpse or non-threatening sound that can fade, through active searching, to confirmed sighting and combat. It says a confirmed sighting counts against stealth-based achievements or trophies. This is a useful example of graded awareness: the first indication of suspicion does not necessarily carry the same consequence as being conclusively identified.

How to decide whether to recover or restart
When an alert begins, make the decision from the mode’s fail rules and the game’s current state, not from the word “caught” alone. A practical sequence is:
- Check whether the attempt is already over. If the mode explicitly says discovery causes game over, or the game has shown a failure state, restarting may be the only route to a clean attempt.
- Identify the current awareness state. Separate suspicion or a search from confirmed sighting, combat and an active alarm. Use the game’s status display or mission cues where available.
- Look for the documented recovery route. Depending on the game, this may mean breaking line of sight and waiting for an evasion countdown, hiding, or changing to an uncompromised disguise.
- Check what cannot be undone. A mission may remain playable while a “Never Spotted” condition, body discovery, noticed kill, video evidence or alarm consequence has already affected the evaluation.
- Weigh the run’s stakes. A standard mission with a recoverable search state is different from a challenge that forbids discovery or an Elusive Target contract that cannot be restarted after objectives begin.
Do not assume that clearing immediate danger restores everything. In the documented Metal Gear Solid example, evasion can return the game to infiltration; in Metal Gear Solid 2, caution can leave heightened patrols; in HITMAN, reducing an alert level does not promise a perfect rating. Recovery can mean “the mission continues,” not “the mistake is erased.”
What the examples establish—and what they do not
The official materials show several genuinely different designs: recoverable pursuit, lingering caution, alert reduction, performance penalties, alarm-related abort risk and mode-specific instant failure. They establish that getting noticed can matter in more than one way and that “caught” is too broad a label to predict the outcome.
