No universal Unity 6 requirement is stated in Valve’s public Steam Frame material. The relevant label is Steam Frame Standalone Verified: it indicates games that work standalone on the headset, rather than games streamed from a PC. Valve describes Steam Frame as ARM64 hardware running SteamOS, but its public pages do not publish a full certification checklist or specify an engine-version threshold.
What Steam Frame Standalone Verified means
Valve says the rating is intended to help players identify which VR and non-VR games in their Steam libraries work standalone on Steam Frame. That is a different compatibility question from whether a game can be streamed from a PC: Valve says the headset can also stream the Steam library. Valve’s Steam Frame page describes both play modes.
Valve’s broader Steam Hardware page says it is expanding device compatibility ratings to Steam Machine and Steam Frame so customers can understand how games run on those devices. The public descriptions explain the ratings’ purpose, but do not establish that Steam Frame criteria are identical to Steam Deck criteria or require Unity 6.
Why the headset’s platform matters more than the engine label
Valve lists Steam Frame as ARM64 hardware running SteamOS 3 (Arch-based). A game’s standalone compatibility therefore depends on whether the developer’s build and runtime support the headset’s platform, among other title-specific requirements. That platform context does not itself establish that a game must use Unity 6. The public product page also lists 16GB of unified LPDDR5X RAM; that specification is not evidence of an engine requirement or a performance guarantee.

For a particular game, keep these questions separate:
- Standalone or streamed? Is the game running on Steam Frame, or on a PC and streamed to the headset?
- Supported build and runtime? Does the developer support the game on Steam Frame’s ARM64 SteamOS environment?
- Title-specific constraints? Does the developer identify licensing, operating-system, anti-cheat, input, runtime, or performance reasons for an update?
- Who states the requirement? A Valve certification rule and a developer’s requirement for one named game are not interchangeable.
Unity 6 updates can be game-specific
Northwood Studios announced on October 11, 2024, that SCP: Secret Laboratory would transition to Unity 6 in its planned 14.0 update because of licensing changes affecting older releases. The announcement also described new minimum operating-system requirements for that game and said Proton/Wine use would remain unsupported for its client. Northwood’s announcement concerns that title’s licensing and platform decisions; it does not mention Steam Frame Verified or set a rule for other Unity games.

What to check for a specific game
If you are deciding whether a Unity game needs an update to run standalone on Steam Frame, look for current information from Valve and the game’s developer. A Unity version mentioned in a game announcement may explain a title-specific change, but it does not establish Valve’s certification criteria. The public Steam Frame material does not provide the complete checklist, so engine-version requirements for an individual title should not be inferred from the badge alone.
