Yes. In Minecraft, villagers need to be able to work at their job-site workstation to restock exhausted trades. The details documented by Mojang differ by edition: Java’s update notes say villagers can restock up to twice per day if they can work at their workstation, while Bedrock’s notes describe resupply when villagers arrive at their job site.
How villager restocking works
A trade becomes eligible for restocking after the villager has used up its available stock. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock stable trade-table documentation describes max_uses as the number of times a trade can be used before the trader needs to restock: Creating a Trade Table (updated March 5, 2026). This is creator documentation about trade tables, not a complete player-facing guide to every restocking condition.
The villager’s workstation matters because it is where the villager performs its job. Minecraft’s Java Village & Pillage update notes say villagers restock up to two times per day if they can work at their workstation: Java update notes, April 23, 2019.
What the official notes say by edition
| Edition | Restocking detail in official update notes |
|---|---|
| Java | Villagers can restock up to twice per day if they can work at their workstation, according to Minecraft’s April 23, 2019 Java update notes. |
| Bedrock | Villagers resupply their trades when they arrive at their job site, according to Minecraft’s April 23, 2019 Bedrock release notes: Bedrock release notes. |
These are official notes from the 2019 Village & Pillage releases, not a version-by-version account of every current setup. The Java note gives a daily maximum; the Bedrock note describes resupplying at the job site without stating a daily count.

What to check if a villager will not restock
- Check whether the trade is exhausted. A trade that still has uses remaining does not need to restock yet.
- Check the assigned job-site block. Make sure the villager can work at the workstation associated with its profession. The Java note specifically conditions restocking on being able to work there; the Bedrock note describes resupply on arrival at the job site.
- Allow for the edition-specific behavior. Java’s official note says up to two restocks per day; the cited Bedrock note does not give a matching daily limit.
The cited official documentation does not settle every current pathfinding, workstation-linking, or trading-hall edge case. It also does not establish a definitive Bedrock bed or sleep-cycle requirement, so those should not be treated as confirmed explanations on the basis of these notes.
