Grand Theft Auto V is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB, whose age guidance says the content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. Participating ESRB Retail Council retailers describe policies against selling or renting M-rated games to people under 17, but the rating itself does not establish a purchase law that applies everywhere. Check the specific seller’s current policy.
What does GTA 5’s 17+ rating mean?
The ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto V listing gives the game an M (Mature 17+) rating. ESRB defines that category as: “Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up.” This is age-appropriateness guidance, not by itself proof of a universal legal minimum purchase age. The ESRB’s rating guide says Mature-rated games may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, or strong language.

Why is GTA 5 rated M?
The ESRB listing names these content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It also identifies Users Interact and In-Game Purchases. Its summary describes an open-world action game following three criminals in fictional Los Santos, with criminal missions, gun violence, sexual material, drug and alcohol depictions, and strong language.
Can a retailer refuse to sell it to someone under 17?
Yes. The ESRB Retail Council code describes participating member retailers’ policies not to sell or rent M-rated games to people under 17. It describes possible ways to apply those policies, including age verification by store personnel or an age-certification prompt during online checkout. The code applies to participating retailers; it does not establish the current procedure of every seller or a universal statute. Check the retailer’s own current terms or ask the store.

Does the rule differ for physical and digital purchases?
The rating can appear on a physical package or a digital storefront listing, but the seller determines how it checks age under its own policy. ESRB’s Where to Find Ratings page says ratings are displayed on physical game packages, digital storefronts, advertisements, and websites, and lists Amazon among retailers that display ratings. That does not confirm any particular store’s current age-check process.

- The exact edition and platform: The ESRB listing identifies Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Make sure the product listing matches the system you own; do not assume every edition or platform is interchangeable.
