But whether your save survives—and whether you can restore it after reinstalling—depends on the platform, the game, and whether a current backup or cloud sync exists. Before uninstalling, confirm your save is present and synced; do not choose a separate option to delete saved data.
Does uninstalling a game delete its save data?
Often, the game installation and save data are separate. Removing the installation does not necessarily remove progress, but it is not a universal guarantee. Saves may be stored on the console or computer, synced through a platform service, or associated with a publisher account. Cloud saving is not automatic for every game, and an unsynced local save may not return when you reinstall.

Keep two actions distinct: uninstalling or deleting the game software, and deleting saved data. The latter can erase progress and, on some systems, may be irreversible.
What happens on each platform?
| Platform | What happens to saves when software is removed | Backup and key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory, not on a microSD card, and is unaffected when downloaded software is archived or deleted. Nintendo Data Management FAQ | Cloud backups require a supported game and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Manually deleted saves cannot be recovered. Nintendo save-data controls Nintendo cloud backup guidance |
| PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | Sony provides separate controls for games/apps and saved data, so deleting the installation is a different operation from deleting the save. PlayStation storage management | Sony identifies PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saved data, and USB copying for PS4 saves. Its guidance does not establish USB copying as a general PS5 backup method. |
| Steam on PC | Steam Cloud is game-specific; developers choose which user files are synced. With Cloud disabled, progress may remain only on the computer where it was made. Steam Cloud | Do not ignore a cloud/local conflict: Valve warns that proceeding can result in lost data or progress. Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. |
| Xbox | Xbox support covers cloud game saves and sync errors, but the available guidance does not establish precise uninstall behavior for every game. Xbox cloud game saves | Check the current sync status and the specific game’s support guidance rather than assuming every save will restore automatically. |
| Mobile or publisher-account games | Behavior varies by title. Progress may depend on being signed in, linking an account, or enabling a particular platform or publisher cloud service. | Verify the account and backup inside the game before uninstalling; reinstalling or changing devices does not guarantee restored progress. |
How to protect your progress before uninstalling
- Save in the game. Open it, allow it to save, and wait for any in-game or platform sync indicator to finish.
- Check the save separately from the installation. Review the platform’s saved-data or cloud-save controls; do not assume that an installed game or a cloud icon proves the latest save is backed up.
- Confirm a usable backup. For Switch, check that the game supports cloud backup and that your Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. For PlayStation, verify the intended cloud backup; Sony also documents USB copying for PS4 saved data. On Steam, confirm the game supports Cloud and that synchronization completed.
- Resolve sync warnings carefully. On Steam, compare the local and cloud copies and preserve a backup before choosing which one to keep. Do not dismiss a conflict and launch without checking; the wrong choice can cost progress.
- Check account access. For a game that uses a publisher account, make sure the correct account is linked and that you can sign in again.
- Read the confirmation before deleting. Avoid options labeled “delete saved data,” “delete everywhere,” or similar unless you intend to erase progress. Nintendo warns that manually deleted save data cannot be recovered.
Will my save still be there if I reinstall?
It may be. If the save remained on the device, or a current cloud or account backup is available, reinstalling the game can let you continue. If the only copy was local and was removed, cloud sync was disabled or incomplete, or the wrong account is used, the save may not return. The safest answer is to verify the save or backup before uninstalling—not to rely on reinstalling as a recovery method.
