Every public hostname that people are expected to visit must have a DNS resolution path. Several hostnames can resolve to the same IP address, load balancer, or other serving endpoint, while Apache or Nginx chooses the correct site from the hostname in the request. Adding a virtual-host block configures the web server; it does not publish the name in DNS.

What “one DNS record per virtual host” actually means
A virtual host is a site selected by its hostname on a shared web server. Consider three names: example.com, www.example.com, and shop.example.com. They are three distinct DNS names. If visitors are meant to use all three, each needs a way to resolve to the service that handles the traffic.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat does not mean each name needs its own server, backend application, or IP address. Name-based virtual hosting lets many names share one address. Apache’s documentation describes this as the simpler arrangement: DNS maps each hostname to the appropriate address, and Apache is configured to recognize those hostnames. The same address can therefore serve many unrelated domains.
The practical boundary is important: creating ServerName, ServerAlias, or Nginx server_name entries does not create DNS entries. Apache explicitly warns that virtual-host configuration does not “magically cause DNS entries to be created.” DNS and web-server configuration are separate tasks, and both must be correct.

How a request reaches the right virtual host
- DNS lookup: The browser asks DNS for the hostname. An A record, AAAA record, or a DNS-provider alias mechanism returns an address or endpoint. Several names may return the same answer.
- Connection: The browser connects to that address, normally on the HTTP or HTTPS port.
- Hostname selection: For HTTP, the request includes a
Host:header. Apache compares that value withServerNameandServerAlias; Nginx compares it withserver_name. - TLS selection for HTTPS: During the TLS handshake, Server Name Indication (SNI) can provide the hostname before the encrypted HTTP request is available. The server uses it to select the certificate and virtual-server context.
- Fallback: If no configured name matches, the server uses its default or first matching virtual host. Without an intentional catch-all policy, an unknown or mistyped domain can display the wrong site.
DNS only gets the client to the endpoint. The HTTP hostname and, for HTTPS, the SNI name determine which configured site responds after the connection arrives.
Which DNS records can serve multiple virtual hosts?
A and AAAA records
An A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address; an AAAA record maps it to IPv6. If the server or load balancer has both, publish the corresponding records for every public name that should work over that protocol. Multiple names can contain identical A and AAAA values.

CNAME and provider-specific aliases
A CNAME or an equivalent alias feature can point a name at another DNS name instead of repeating an address. Whether an alias is allowed at the zone apex and how it behaves depends on the DNS provider. The important requirement is still resolution: the final answer must lead to the endpoint serving the virtual hosts.
Wildcards
A wildcard DNS record can provide answers for many names below a domain, reducing the number of individually maintained records. It does not automatically configure Apache or Nginx, and it does not cover every possible name in every DNS situation. Explicit records may take precedence, and provider rules determine exactly what the wildcard matches.

A wildcard also does not solve HTTPS by itself. The certificate presented to a browser must cover the hostname, either through an exact subject name or an appropriate certificate wildcard. The web server must likewise accept the name with an exact alias or an intentional wildcard configuration.
Apache: map every accepted name in the virtual-host block
Apache’s name-based configuration normally includes one primary ServerName and any additional names in ServerAlias. A minimal HTTP example looks like this:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com shop.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
</VirtualHost>
DNS must resolve all three names before this block can serve them to visitors. The aliases do not publish themselves. If another virtual host shares the same address and port, Apache compares the request hostname and selects the matching block. When none matches, the first listed matching virtual host becomes the fallback, so list and configure a deliberate default rather than allowing an unrelated site to answer accidentally.
Apache also supports IP-based virtual hosting. In that model, the address of the connection determines the host, so each host requires a separate IP address. That is a different design from ordinary name-based hosting and is mainly useful when address-level separation is required.

Nginx: exact, wildcard, and regular-expression names
Nginx places accepted hostnames in the server_name directive. One server block can list several exact names:
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com shop.example.com;
root /var/www/example;
}
Nginx also supports wildcard and regular-expression names. Matching follows Nginx’s defined precedence rules, so a broad wildcard should not unintentionally override a more specific name. As with Apache, the directive affects only requests that have already reached Nginx; it does not create DNS.
For HTTPS, Nginx can use the SNI name during the TLS handshake and then process the HTTP Host header. Ensure that the certificate, the SNI selection, and the final server_name match the hostname a visitor actually enters.
Name-based versus IP-based hosting
| Consideration | Name-based hosting | IP-based hosting |
|---|---|---|
| IP addresses | Many hostnames can share one address or endpoint. | A separate IP address is required for each host, according to Apache’s description of IP-based virtual hosts. |
| DNS management | Each public hostname still needs resolution, but records can point to the same answer or use supported aliases and wildcards. | Each hostname resolves to its assigned address. |
| Site selection | The HTTP Host header selects the virtual host; HTTPS can use SNI before HTTP. |
The connection’s destination IP selects the host. |
| TLS certificates | The certificate must cover every hostname clients use; SNI allows multiple certificates or contexts on shared addresses. | Address separation can simplify some isolation choices, but certificate names are still required for HTTPS hostnames. |
| Isolation | Efficient, but a shared endpoint needs careful default-host and unknown-name handling. | Stronger address-level separation, at the cost of additional addresses and management. |
| Unknown host behavior | Usually falls through to the default or first matching virtual host unless you configure a safe catch-all. | Reaches the site associated with the destination address. |
For most modern multi-site servers, name-based hosting minimizes address use. Choose separate IPs when a requirement specifically calls for address-level isolation or when the serving architecture cannot safely share an endpoint.

Setting up a new virtual-host domain
- Choose the public names. Write down every hostname users will enter, including the apex name, a
wwwname, regional names, API names, and any redirects you intend to support. Treat each spelling as a separate DNS name. - Publish DNS. Create the required A and/or AAAA records, or use a supported alias. Point all names that share the site to the same serving address or load-balancer endpoint. If you use a wildcard, document which explicit records override it.
- Configure the web server. Add Apache
ServerName/ServerAliasor Nginxserver_nameentries for exactly the names you want to accept. Configure a deliberate default for unmatched traffic. - Configure HTTPS. Obtain a certificate whose names cover every HTTPS hostname, including aliases that redirect. Enable SNI-aware virtual-server selection and install the certificate in the matching context.
- Check both protocols and addresses. Test each hostname over HTTP and HTTPS, and test IPv4 and IPv6 if both A and AAAA records exist. Confirm that redirects, application routing, and the visible certificate all correspond to the requested name.
- Handle names you do not serve. Decide whether an unknown hostname should receive a neutral response, a rejection, or a controlled redirect. Do not let an unrelated customer or administrative site become the accidental default.
Why the wrong site loads when domains share one server
The name does not resolve to this endpoint
Check the actual A, AAAA, CNAME, or alias result for the affected hostname. A stale record, an overlooked IPv6 record, or a wildcard pointing elsewhere can send the request to a different server before Apache or Nginx has any opportunity to choose a virtual host.
The hostname is missing from the server configuration
If DNS is correct but the name is absent from ServerName, ServerAlias, or server_name, the request is unmatched and normally lands on the default or first virtual host. Add the exact spelling users request, then reload the server using your normal configuration-deployment procedure.
HTTP and HTTPS select different contexts
A name may work over HTTP but show another site over HTTPS when the TLS certificate or SNI virtual-server configuration lacks that hostname. Check the certificate’s covered names and the HTTPS virtual-host block separately; matching only the port-80 configuration is insufficient.
The browser is using a different hostname
example.com, www.example.com, and shop.example.com are not interchangeable to DNS or to the web server. A redirect, bookmark, application-generated URL, or spelling variation can expose a name you never configured. Add it deliberately or redirect it from a controlled virtual host.

When you do not need a public DNS record
A name used only inside a private network does not have to be published in public DNS. It still needs a resolution method available to those users, such as the organization’s internal DNS or a managed local mapping, and the internal clients must reach the serving endpoint. The same separation remains: internal name resolution gets the request to the server, while Apache or Nginx still needs to recognize the hostname.
Likewise, a backend service that is never addressed by users may be reached through an internal service name rather than a public record. Do not omit DNS for a name that appears in public links, certificates, API clients, or redirects simply because another hostname already points to the same IP.
Final checklist
- Every public hostname users can request has an A, AAAA, CNAME, supported alias, or intentional wildcard resolution path.
- Shared DNS answers are intentional; they point to the endpoint that actually serves all listed names.
- Apache contains the name in
ServerNameorServerAlias, or Nginx contains it inserver_name. - HTTPS certificates cover every hostname, and SNI selects the expected TLS context.
- A safe default handles unknown or mistyped hostnames.
- IPv4, IPv6, HTTP, and HTTPS behavior have all been checked where applicable.
The answer to “one DNS record for each virtual host?” is therefore two-part: every public hostname needs DNS resolution, but multiple hostnames can share one record target, one IP address, or one serving endpoint. Virtual-host configuration chooses the site only after DNS has delivered the request.
