A WordPress site can be unreachable because of a host outage, DNS or SSL misconfiguration, a failed database connection, a broken plugin or theme, exhausted server resources, or a security rule blocking requests. Start by making a full backup, recording the exact error and HTTP status, and checking both the public site and /wp-admin. Then isolate one reversible cause at a time.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The guide below follows the safest order: distinguish an infrastructure failure from a WordPress failure, use Recovery Mode and logs where available, disable plugins without dashboard access when necessary, and involve your host before changing server or database settings you cannot verify.

Do not assume every outage has the same cause. Open the site from a separate network or device, then test the front end and https://your-domain.example/wp-admin separately. Record the exact browser message, any WordPress critical-error notice, the HTTP status code, and the time the failure began. Ask another person or an external monitoring check whether visitors see the same result.
- Nothing resolves: suspect hosting, DNS, nameservers, or a domain problem before editing WordPress.
- The domain resolves but returns a server error: investigate PHP, memory, a plugin, a theme, corrupted files, or the database.
- The home page loads but internal URLs return 404: check permalinks and rewrite rules.
- Visitors can browse but scheduled tasks or Site Health loopbacks fail: investigate firewall, DNS, SSL, or HTTP authentication outside the WordPress dashboard.
- Only the dashboard fails: a plugin, theme, authentication rule, PHP error, or damaged admin files may be responsible even though public pages work.
Safe triage before changing anything
- Create a complete backup. Preserve the database and all site files before deactivating extensions, editing configuration, removing maintenance files, or replacing core files. If the site is already inaccessible, use the host’s backup tool or a file-manager and database export.
- Write down the evidence. Save the visible message, URL, HTTP status, time, recent changes, and whether all visitors are affected. This prevents a transient 503 or a single broken URL from being treated as a full outage.
- Check the host. Review the hosting status page and control panel for an outage, account suspension, resource limit, database service failure, or maintenance event. Use the host’s support channel when the server or database appears unavailable.
- Check domain and certificate status. Confirm that DNS records and nameservers point to the intended server and that the HTTPS certificate and server SSL settings are valid.
- Use WordPress diagnostics. If the dashboard opens, check Site Health and any Recovery Mode notice. Review
wp-content/debug.logand the server error log when available; never leave verbose debugging visible to visitors. - Isolate one variable. Make one reversible change, retest both the front end and dashboard, and record the result. Do not simultaneously change DNS, database credentials, PHP, and plugins because you will lose the trail.

1. Hosting or server outage
A powered-off server, host maintenance event, suspended account, exhausted database quota, or failed web/database service can make every WordPress diagnosis misleading. If the domain times out, returns a host-branded error, or both the site and dashboard fail at once, start outside WordPress.

How to check
- Open the host’s public status page and account control panel.
- Look for suspension notices, quota warnings, scheduled maintenance, or a database service alert.
- Compare the site from another network to rule out a local connection problem.
Fix
Resolve an account, quota, or service issue through the host. Ask support to confirm web-server and database health rather than repeatedly editing WordPress files. If the host confirms an outage, wait for service restoration while preserving your backup and the exact time and errors for follow-up.
2. DNS or domain misconfiguration
When a domain does not resolve, resolves to an old server, or opens another site, WordPress files are not the first place to look. Incorrect A or AAAA records, changed nameservers, an expired domain, or a registrar-side change can all direct requests away from the correct installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to check
- Confirm the domain is active with the registrar.
- Compare the published DNS records and nameservers with the values supplied by the current host.
- Verify that the records point to the intended server and that both the bare domain and
wwwhostname are configured as intended.
Correct the records at the registrar or DNS provider, not in WordPress. Ask the host to confirm the expected destination before making changes; pointing DNS at the wrong account can replace one outage with another.
3. SSL or HTTPS failure
An expired, mismatched, incomplete, or incorrectly installed certificate can prevent browsers from loading the site. A forced-HTTPS rule can also create a redirect loop when the server is not serving HTTPS correctly. The same SSL problem may break WordPress loopback requests even when a page appears to load in a browser.
What to verify
- The certificate covers the exact domain and hostname visitors use.
- The host is serving the certificate and intermediate configuration correctly.
- HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects are not sending requests back and forth between conflicting settings.
- WordPress Address and Site Address use the intended protocol after the server certificate is working.
Have the host verify the certificate and web-server SSL configuration. Do not work around a certificate warning by telling visitors to bypass it; that hides a security and availability problem.

4. Database connection failure
The message Error Establishing a Database Connection means WordPress cannot reach or authenticate to its database. A typo in credentials, an unavailable database server, an exhausted quota, or a compromised account can produce the same front-end message.
Check the configuration
Open wp-config.php through a secure file method and compare DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST with the values supplied by the host. Preserve the file and never paste its password into a public support forum or debug page.
Check the server
If the values are correct, ask the host whether the database service is running, the account has exceeded its quota, connections are being refused, or the site shows signs of compromise. Do not repeatedly reset credentials without knowing which application and database account are paired; a mismatch can take a working site offline.
5. Plugin conflict or fatal error
A plugin can trigger a PHP fatal error after an update, interact badly with another plugin, or fail under a changed PHP configuration. WordPress Recovery Mode, introduced in WordPress 5.2, can provide an administrator login that pauses the offending extension for your session.
When Recovery Mode appears
- Use the Recovery Mode link delivered by WordPress, if available.
- Read the error details to identify the plugin and the file named in the notice.
- Deactivate or update the suspected plugin from the dashboard.
- Retest the public site and dashboard, then restore plugins one at a time if more than one was disabled.
When wp-admin is unavailable
Connect with FTP or the host’s file manager and rename /wp-content/plugins/ to a temporary name such as plugins.disabled. This disables all plugins without changing their files. If the site returns, rename the directory back to plugins and deactivate or reactivate extensions individually until the failure recurs. Replace or remove the extension only after your backup is secure.

6. Theme or custom-code fatal error
A recently edited theme file, a child-theme function, or a custom snippet can stop PHP before WordPress renders a page. The timing of the outage—immediately after a theme or code change—is a strong clue, but logs provide safer confirmation than guessing.
Isolation steps
- Use Recovery Mode or the error log to identify the file and line involved.
- Undo the recent code change, preferably by restoring the backed-up file rather than deleting unrelated code.
- If the dashboard is inaccessible, use the file manager to switch temporarily to an installed default WordPress theme by renaming the active theme directory or changing the theme through the database only with host guidance.
- Inspect
wp-content/debug.logand server logs for the first fatal error, not just the final browser symptom.
Once the site works on a default theme, correct the custom theme or snippet in a staging copy before reactivating it on production.
7. Incompatible PHP version or extension
A host-side PHP change, an outdated plugin or theme, or a missing PHP extension can produce a critical error even when no WordPress setting changed. Compatibility is a three-way check: the PHP version offered by the server, the requirements of the current WordPress release, and the requirements of every active theme and plugin.
How to resolve it
- Record the server’s PHP version and enabled extensions in the hosting panel or Site Health.
- Compare that configuration with the documented requirements of WordPress, the active theme, and recently changed plugins.
- Ask the host for a supported PHP configuration or a controlled version change.
- Update or replace extensions that do not support the selected PHP version, testing one change at a time.
Do not switch PHP blindly on a production site. Keep the backup and error log available so the host can restore the previous configuration if the change causes another fatal error.
8. Memory or execution limits
A white screen, intermittent critical error, or timeout can occur when PHP exhausts its memory allowance or reaches its execution-time limit. Large imports, image processing, backups, and poorly behaved extensions can consume resources that a small or shared hosting plan cannot provide.

Safe response
- Use the server log and host resource panel to confirm whether memory or execution time was exhausted.
- Disable the extension or operation that triggered the spike before raising limits.
- Ask the host which limits can be increased on the account and whether the plan is being throttled.
- Apply any configuration change only after the full backup, and retest the exact action that failed.
Increasing a limit can mask an inefficient plugin or an undersized server. Treat it as a controlled diagnostic change, not a permanent cure, especially on shared hosting.
9. Failed update and stuck maintenance mode
During an update, WordPress creates a hidden .maintenance file in the site root and displays a maintenance notice. If the update completed but the file remains, every visitor may continue to see that notice.
Remove a stale file
- Confirm that no WordPress, plugin, or theme update is still running.
- Open the site root with FTP or the host’s file manager, enabling display of hidden files.
- Delete only the root
.maintenancefile. - Load the front end and dashboard, then check for an incomplete update or a plugin that still needs attention.
Never remove the file while an update is actively copying files. Interrupting that process can leave a partially updated installation, which requires the recovery steps described for corrupted core files.
10. Corrupted WordPress files
Damaged or incomplete core files can follow a failed update, disk problem, compromised account, or accidental deletion. If plugin and theme isolation does not identify the failure and logs point to missing or unreadable core files, use a known-good backup or a fresh WordPress package.
Recovery choices
- Restore a known-good backup: use the host’s documented restore process when you know when the site last worked.
- Replace core files: upload a fresh WordPress package while preserving
wp-content,wp-config.php, and other site-specific configuration. WordPress specifically suggests re-uploadingwp-adminandwp-includesfor some failures. - Escalate suspected compromise: ask the host to preserve logs and scan the account before overwriting evidence.
Do not overwrite wp-content or configuration indiscriminately; doing so can remove uploads, themes, plugins, and connection settings.

11. Permalink or .htaccess rewrite failure
If the home page loads but posts, pages, or game-news categories return 404 errors, the content may be intact while rewrite rules are wrong. A changed server module, damaged .htaccess, or migration can cause this pattern.
Flush the rules
- In wp-admin, open Settings → Permalinks.
- Leave the selected structure unchanged and click Save Changes.
- Test several existing posts and pages, not just the home page.
If the dashboard is unavailable or the problem persists, have the host check the root .htaccess file and confirm that the server’s rewrite support, including mod_rewrite where applicable, is enabled. Keep a copy before editing the file.

12. Firewall, authentication, loopback, or security block
WordPress can appear healthy to visitors while scheduled tasks, Site Health checks, REST requests, or loopbacks fail. A web-application firewall, hosting firewall, DNS filter, SSL mismatch, or HTTP authentication rule may be blocking requests that originate from the server itself.
How to distinguish it
- Compare a normal browser visit with the failing Site Health loopback or scheduled task.
- Note whether the failure began after a firewall, CDN, DNS, SSL, or password-protection change.
- Temporarily disable a suspected security plugin only after plugin isolation and the backup step; do not leave the site unprotected longer than necessary.
Ask the host to inspect firewall logs, DNS resolution from the server, SSL validation, and HTTP authentication rules. These checks often require infrastructure access that WordPress administrators do not have.
How to choose between two plausible fixes
When several causes fit the same error, compare four practical factors before acting:
| Question | Prefer the fix that… |
|---|---|
| What is the visible symptom? | Explains the exact message and whether the front end, dashboard, or loopback is affected. |
| What access is available? | Uses dashboard tools first, then FTP/file manager, database access, and host support in that order of increasing risk. |
| Is it reversible? | Can be undone quickly, such as renaming a plugin directory or switching a theme temporarily. |
| Is the fault inside WordPress? | Leaves DNS, SSL, firewall, and server changes to the registrar or host instead of editing application files. |
After the site returns: prevent the next outage
- Keep automated WordPress backups that include both files and the database, and periodically verify that a restore is possible.
- Use a staging copy for theme edits, custom PHP, plugin updates, and PHP-version changes before applying them to production.
- Keep WordPress, themes, plugins, and PHP on supported versions; remove extensions that are no longer maintained.
- Set up WordPress uptime monitoring that checks the front end and, where possible, a representative internal URL.
- Review hosting quotas, database health, certificate renewal, DNS ownership, and firewall changes as part of routine maintenance.
- Keep administrator contact details current so Recovery Mode messages and host alerts reach someone who can act.
- Disable public display of verbose debug output after troubleshooting and store logs where only authorized administrators can read them.
A reliable recovery plan is more valuable than a single magic fix: preserve a backup, identify the boundary where the failure occurs, isolate one reversible change, and escalate infrastructure problems to the people who control the server, DNS, certificate, or firewall.
