A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Usually, no—but it depends on how and where you play. A PC gamer who buys downloads can skip an optical drive. A console gamer who buys physical games needs a compatible disc-equipped console. Collectors, used-game buyers, movie watchers, and people with unreliable internet may still get real value from one.
- Digital PC gaming: usually no drive.
- Physical PS5 or Xbox games: use a compatible disc drive.
- PS5 Digital Edition: only certain slim models and PS5 Pro accept Sony’s add-on drive.
- Older games, discs, movies, or archives: a drive can still be worthwhile.
What an optical drive actually does
An optical drive uses a laser to read discs. Depending on the hardware, those discs may be CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. Compatibility is not universal: a DVD drive cannot automatically read Blu-ray media, and a console supports only the formats its manufacturer specifies.
“Optical drive” is the hardware term; “disc drive” is the usual console term. A drive may read installation data, verify a physical license, or play movie and music media. It does not improve graphics, frame rates, CPU performance, GPU performance, or SSD speed.
Sony’s PS5 documentation lists supported Blu-ray and DVD formats for disc-equipped models, whose optical drive is read-only: PS5 disc specifications.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Do you need one for PC gaming?
Most PC gamers do not. The normal workflow is to install Windows, install Steam or another launcher, buy or redeem a game, download it, and install updates. That requires storage and internet access, not optical hardware.
You can build without an internal 5.25-inch bay, SATA power and data cables for a drive, or an external USB drive. The money may be better spent on an SSD, memory, cooling, or graphics hardware.
When a PC drive is useful
- Installing older CD- or DVD-based games and software.
- Reading boxed games that include an activation key or an outdated installer.
- Accessing archived data, personal backups, music CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.
- Using legacy products that are unavailable digitally.
Why a boxed PC game may still download
A physical PC release may contain the base installer, an activation key, an old version, or only a launcher. It may require a publisher account, online activation, a large patch, or modern compatibility fixes. Old disc-based DRM can also fail on current operating systems, so reading the disc does not guarantee that the game will install or run.
For Steam products, activate a key through + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam…. Steam also documents a game-specific legacy procedure for some supported retail discs:

Do you need one for PlayStation 5?
PS5 with a built-in disc drive
A disc-equipped PS5 supports compatible physical PS5 and PS4 games, digital purchases, and disc media such as Blu-ray and DVD. It is the flexible choice if you own discs, buy used games, lend or resell them, or want a console movie player. Confirm the exact model’s supported formats before buying media.
PS5 Digital Edition
The PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in optical drive. Sony’s attachable drive is intended for PS5 Digital Edition slim model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and for PS5 Pro; it is not a universal upgrade for every earlier PS5 Digital Edition. Internet access is required to pair the compatible drive during setup.
- Locate the console’s model number.
- Confirm that it is a supported CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim model, or PS5 Pro.
- Install Sony’s compatible drive according to the hardware instructions.
- Connect the console to the internet for pairing.
- Test a supported PS5, PS4, Blu-ray, or DVD disc.
See Sony’s PS5 model information and official accessories page. A generic USB DVD or Blu-ray drive is not a substitute.

What Sony’s January 2028 announcement means
Sony announced that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. That statement does not make existing discs stop working, erase previously released games, or establish a policy for Xbox and PC. Existing physical games and used-market availability remain separate questions. Read the July 1, 2026 announcement in that limited context.
Do you need one for Xbox?
Model choice matters. Microsoft lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive in Xbox Series X, making that model capable of supported physical games and compatible disc media. Do not assume every Xbox-branded console has the same hardware; check the exact model, storage configuration, packaging, and current availability.
Even with a disc-equipped Xbox, ask whether the title requires a download, update, account sign-in, or online service. The disc can be installation media, a license check, or both. Verify the specific game and console requirements before relying on offline play. See the Xbox Series X specification.
Does a physical disc contain the whole game?
Not necessarily. A disc can contain the base game, an installer, a license, an older build, only part of the content, or a key that triggers a digital download. Modern consoles generally copy game data to internal storage; they do not run the entire game directly from the optical disc.

Internet access may still be required for initial setup, activation, patches, downloadable content, multiplayer, anti-cheat, cloud saves, or content absent from the disc. Installation speed depends on disc-read speed, local storage, download size, network speed, and server load—not simply on whether a box is physical.
Physical versus digital gaming
| Consideration | Physical copy | Digital copy |
|---|---|---|
| Used games | Usually available where retailers and owners offer them | Generally unavailable as a transferable used item |
| Resale, lending, trade-ins | Often possible, subject to the platform and retailer | Generally limited by account and storefront rules |
| Convenience | Requires storage and disc swapping | Immediate account-based access without swapping |
| Downloads | May still require installation, patches, or missing content | Requires downloading the game and updates |
| Offline use | May work offline after installation, but activation and game-specific checks vary | Offline availability depends on the platform, license, and game |
| Hardware | Requires a compatible built-in or officially supported drive | Works on all-digital hardware |
| Media | Can also support movies or music on compatible hardware | No disc playback |
Neither format guarantees indefinite access. A disc can be damaged or depend on a working console, operating system, patch, launcher, account, or server. Digital access can depend on the storefront, account, licensing terms, and service availability. Prices vary by region, sales, used supply, and platform; neither format is always cheaper.

“Owning the disc means I never need the internet.”
False as a universal rule. Setup, activation, patches, multiplayer, DLC, and online checks can still require a connection.
“The game runs directly from the disc.”
Usually not on modern consoles. Data is commonly installed to internal storage, while the disc supplies data and/or verifies the license.

“Digital games are always more expensive.”
Not always. Physical copies can offer used prices and resale; digital stores can offer sales, preloads, and subscription access.
“Any external USB optical drive works with a console.”
False. A generic PC drive is not a universal console upgrade. Use only an officially supported accessory, such as Sony’s compatible PS5 drive.
“Physical games are disappearing immediately.”
Sony’s announcement concerns new PlayStation releases from January 2028, not every platform or every existing disc.
When an optical drive is still worth it
- You own a substantial PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, DVD, or Blu-ray collection.
- You regularly buy used games, trade them, lend them, or resell them.
- You collect physical editions.
- Your broadband is slow, capped, or unreliable.
- You want DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.
- You need to read old software, music CDs, archives, or backups.
When to skip it
- Your PC library is entirely digital through Steam, Epic, GOG, Microsoft Store, or publisher launchers.
- You play downloaded multiplayer, subscription, or cloud games.
- You never use physical media.
- You are building a compact PC without a drive bay.
- You are choosing an all-digital console and accept storefront-only purchasing.
Buying checklist
- Identify your platform and exact console model.
- List the physical games and media you already own.
- Decide whether used games, lending, collecting, or resale matters.
- Choose the required format: CD, DVD, Blu-ray, or UHD Blu-ray.
- Check whether the game needs a key, launcher, patch, account, or online service.
- For a PC, confirm an internal bay and SATA connections, or choose an external USB model.
- For PS5, verify CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim compatibility or PS5 Pro support before buying an add-on.
- Compare the drive cost with storage, memory, cooling, or GPU upgrades.
Practical alternatives
An external USB optical drive is convenient for occasional PC use and avoids an internal bay, but DVD-only models cannot read Blu-ray and Blu-ray playback may require compatible software. A networked drive can serve several computers but is inconvenient for game installation and does not replace a proprietary console accessory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Digital storefronts remove disc storage and swapping but require downloads, storage, accounts, and storefront access. Cloud gaming removes both discs and local installation where supported, while adding broadband, latency, service, subscription, and regional dependencies. Disc images can preserve personal data or legacy software subject to copyright and licensing restrictions; they are not a way to bypass copy protection.
Bottom line
Buy disc-equipped hardware if physical games, used-market access, resale, collecting, movies, or legacy media are part of your habits. Skip an optical drive for a digital-first PC or all-digital console. A disc is useful access hardware, but it is not a guarantee of a complete, current, permanently offline game.
