Do You Need Local Currency in Adriatic Cruise Ports?

Most Adriatic cruise calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro use euros. Albania uses the lek, so plan for local cash or card payment there.

For Adriatic cruise calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, euros are the practical local currency. Albania is the main exception: it uses the lek, so do not assume euro cash will be accepted at every stop. For most itineraries, bring a modest euro cash reserve and a card; if Albania is on your route, plan to pay by card where accepted or arrange some lek for cash purchases.

Which currency should you use at each port?

“Adriatic cruise ports” can mean different itineraries. For the common coastal calls covered here, the country—not the fact that you are in a cruise port—determines the local currency.

Country Currency What it means for a cruise stop
Italy Euro Use euros.
Slovenia Euro Use euros.
Croatia Euro Use euros.
Montenegro Euro Use euros. Montenegro is outside the EU but uses the euro de facto; its tourism authority describes the euro as the country’s official means of payment.
Albania Lek (ALL) Do not assume euro cash is accepted everywhere. Consider card payment where available or obtain a modest amount of lek if you expect to need cash.

Italy, Slovenia and Croatia use the euro as EU members that have adopted it; Montenegro uses it de facto. The European Commission’s euro overview explains euro use, while Montenegro’s National Tourism Organisation states: “Official means of payment in Crna Gora is the euro (€).”

For Albania, the Bank of Albania’s exchange-rate page displayed EUR 1 = ALL 91.98 on 2026-10-02. That is a dated central-bank reference rate, not a guaranteed rate for exchanging cash or a prediction of the fees a traveler will pay.

Will cards and ATMs work in port?

Cards and ATMs can cover routine spending in many major or tourist areas, but acceptance is not universal. Montenegro’s tourism authority says many restaurants, hotels, bars, fuel stations and shops allow card payment, and ATMs are available in all cities. In Croatia, the Baška tourist office says ATMs are available in major cities and tourist places, and advises looking for whether a merchant indicates card acceptance.

A Croatia-focused cruise operator identifies card and ATM access in Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar. It also advises carrying enough euros for meals and drinks on some smaller islands. Treat that as practical operator guidance, not a guarantee about any particular business or a claim that island shops are generally cash-only. Check your plans for each port, especially if you expect to leave a larger center.

How much cash should you carry?

There is no single cash amount that fits every port day. A sensible approach is to carry a modest euro reserve for small purchases and as a backup if a merchant does not take cards. For an Albania stop, consider a modest amount of lek if your plans involve cash purchases; the available information confirms the currency but does not establish whether individual cruise-port businesses accept euros.

  • Use a card for routine purchases where the merchant accepts it.
  • Keep some cash for low-value purchases, small merchants or payment-system problems.
  • Do not withdraw or exchange more than your plans require; rates and fees can vary.

What fees and conversion choices should you check?

Before departure, review your card issuer’s foreign-transaction fee, ATM withdrawal fee, exchange markup, cash-advance treatment and withdrawal limits. At a terminal or ATM, you may be offered a charge in your home currency rather than the local currency. Compare the displayed conversion and fees with your issuer’s terms before choosing; there is no universally best option established for every card and transaction.

Within the EU, euro payments should not cost more than an equivalent domestic electronically processed euro payment. That rule does not mean your bank will waive its own foreign-transaction, ATM, cash-advance or conversion fees.

A quick plan for your itinerary

  1. Check the port list. For calls only in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, plan to use euros; no separate local currency is needed for those stops.
  2. If Albania is included, plan for lek or card. Use a card where accepted, or obtain a modest amount of lek if your day’s plans call for cash.
  3. Pack more than one way to pay. Carry a card and a modest cash reserve rather than relying entirely on either one.
  4. Check issuer terms and payment prompts. Know your fees and limits, and review any conversion offer before confirming a transaction.

This guidance covers common coastal calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. Check the exact itinerary for other destinations; it does not cover every possible regional call, including Bosnia and Herzegovina.
