Yes—if you want to launch and play Escape from Tarkov through Steam, you need to buy a Steam copy, even if you already own the game through Battlestate Games (BSG). You can link that Steam purchase to your existing active BSG account, and your progress remains on that BSG profile. If you prefer to keep using the BSG launcher, the Steam purchase requirement does not apply to that route.
What the extra Steam purchase gets you
The official Steam FAQ says you must purchase any edition on Steam to play through Steam. So an existing BSG launcher or website license does not unlock Steam access; the Steam copy is a separate platform license.
That does not mean you need to buy the game again to continue playing through the BSG launcher. The extra purchase is only necessary if you want to use Steam as your launch platform and access its integrations.
Will your account and progress carry over?
Yes. Link the Steam copy to your existing active Battlestate Games account. The FAQ says progress is saved to the BSG profile, with Steam providing access to that linked profile. Steam and website purchasers also play on the same servers, so buying on Steam does not put you in a separate game world.

What if your Steam and BSG editions are different?
The FAQ says the higher of the linked editions is used when launching through Steam. Its example is a Steam Standard Edition linked to a BSG account with The Unheard Edition: the higher BSG edition applies through Steam. This addresses which edition is used; it does not remove the requirement to own a Steam copy.
Practical differences to consider
- Installation: The Steam version requires a full reinstall. You cannot simply use the game files downloaded through the BSG launcher for the Steam installation.
- Keys: Keys purchased from the official Escape from Tarkov website activate on that website or in the BSG launcher, not on Steam.
- Family Sharing: Steam Family Sharing is unavailable for Escape from Tarkov.
- Achievements: Steam achievements are supported except for limited-time event achievements. Achievements synchronize only with the first profile linked to Steam.
- Friends: Steam friends synchronization is supported.
How to decide
| Choose this route | What it means |
|---|---|
| Keep using the BSG launcher | No Steam purchase is needed for this existing route; keep launching from the BSG launcher. |
| Play through Steam | Buy any Steam edition, link your active BSG account, and reinstall using the Steam version. Your progress stays on the linked BSG profile. |
Steam access is worth the second license if you specifically want Steam launching or its supported features. It is not required just to play with Steam buyers: the official FAQ says all purchasers use the same servers.
