Usually, no. A normal supported Ubuntu installation already includes a system Python 3 interpreter through the python3 package. Check it first with python3 --version. You only need to install additional packages when you are on a minimal or damaged image, need tools such as pip or venv, or require a Python series different from Ubuntu’s default.

What the direct answer means
Ubuntu treats Python as part of the operating system rather than an optional application. The python3 package is included in the default system installation and depends on the current default Python 3 series for that Ubuntu release. Python’s upstream Unix documentation also describes Python as preinstalled on most Linux distributions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That does not mean every Ubuntu image contains every Python development feature. A desktop or standard server installation can have the interpreter while lacking the complete standard library, pip, or the venv module. Minimal cloud images, custom installations and damaged systems can even lack the python3 command itself.
The safe rule is therefore: check the existing interpreter, add only the capability you need, and leave Ubuntu’s system Python under the package manager’s control.

Which Python version does Ubuntu provide?
Ubuntu’s default Python series changes with the release. The current Ubuntu availability table, checked in 2026, lists these defaults:
| Ubuntu release | Default Python series listed by Ubuntu | What can change |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS | Python 3.12 | Patch versions can change through normal updates. |
| Ubuntu 22.04 LTS | Python 3.10 | Patch versions can change through normal updates. |
The version in that table is the release’s default series, not a promise that every machine will show the same patch number. Security and maintenance updates can move a system from one patch release to another while keeping the same series.

Canonical’s setup guidance explicitly warns: Do not remove the default system installation of Python (the
Removing or replacing it globally to satisfy one project can damage package-management and administrative utilities.python3 package), as that would break system tooling.
Check whether Python 3 is already installed
Do not install anything until you know what is present. Open a terminal and run:
python3 --version
command -v python3
The first command prints the interpreter’s version. The second prints the executable’s path, such as a location managed by Ubuntu’s packages. If both commands succeed, Python 3 is installed and available in your shell.
You may also see a version that differs from an application’s documentation because Ubuntu follows the release’s default series. That is not evidence that Python is missing. Compare the required series with your Ubuntu release before changing anything.
If python3 is found
Keep the interpreter in place. Decide whether your actual problem is one of these narrower needs:
- More of Python’s standard library or the IDLE editor: install
python3-full. - The Python package manager: install
python3-pip. - Virtual-environment support: install
python3-venv. - A different or several Python series: use a deliberate version-management approach rather than replacing the system interpreter.
If the command is absent
An absent command is unusual on a standard supported installation, but it can occur on a custom, minimal, damaged or nonstandard image. Install Ubuntu’s base package from the configured repositories:
sudo apt install python3
After the package operation completes, run the two check commands again. If apt cannot locate the package or cannot reach a repository, the issue is the system’s repository configuration or network access, not a need to compile Python manually. Resolve that package-source problem first.

sudo apt install python3-venv |
python3-venv is listed for the Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 suites. If python3 -m venv reports that the module is unavailable, install that package rather than downloading a second Python interpreter.
python3-full includes virtual-environment support, but installing python3-venv directly is appropriate when that is the only missing feature. The package names are tied to Ubuntu’s default Python, so they are the right first choice for the system interpreter.
Why does pip seem to be missing?
The interpreter and package manager are separate Ubuntu packages. It is normal for python3 --version to work while the pip command is unavailable. Add the package manager explicitly:
sudo apt install python3-pip
Having pip installed does not mean you should use it to modify Ubuntu’s system interpreter. Ubuntu’s developer tutorial explains that installing a Python package with pip outside a virtual environment can produce an externally managed environment
warning. The warning exists to keep the system installation, managed through Ubuntu’s .deb packages, separate from packages installed for an individual project.

The recommended workflow for a project
For application development, data work or any project with dependencies, isolate the project from Ubuntu’s system interpreter. The standard workflow is:
- Make sure the interpreter and virtual-environment module are available. If needed, install
python3-venv. - From the project directory, create an environment:
python3 -m venv .venv
- Activate it in the current shell:
source .venv/bin/activate
- Confirm that the shell is using the environment’s interpreter:
which python3
The displayed path should point inside the project’s .venv directory while the environment is active. Commands that invoke python or python3 in that shell then use the isolated interpreter and its site-packages, leaving Ubuntu’s system files untouched.
When you finish working, leave the environment with:

Activation changes the current shell only. It does not replace Ubuntu’s default Python or alter other projects. Create a separate environment for each project when their dependencies or versions differ.
System packages and virtual environments: which should you choose?
| Situation | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu itself needs Python | The default python3 package |
It is part of the supported system installation and is required by system tooling. |
| You need an Ubuntu-packaged library or command | apt install python3-xyz when that package exists |
The files remain tracked by Ubuntu’s package manager. |
| You need project-specific packages from PyPI or another Python index | python3 -m venv .venv, then install inside it |
Dependencies stay isolated from the operating system and other projects. |
| You need several Python versions or a nondefault series | A version manager such as pyenv, with project-local environments |
The alternate versions can coexist without replacing Ubuntu’s system interpreter. |
This separation also makes failures easier to diagnose. If a project environment becomes unusable, remove and recreate that environment instead of attempting to repair the operating system’s Python installation.
When manual or alternate-version installation is justified
Installing a second Python is reasonable when a project explicitly requires a series that your Ubuntu release does not provide as its default, when multiple series must coexist, or when you deliberately want an interpreter managed outside Ubuntu’s package lifecycle.
A project requires another Python series
First identify the requirement precisely: a series such as 3.10 or 3.12, rather than an assumed patch number. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS lists 3.12 as its default, while Ubuntu 22.04 LTS lists 3.10. A project that requires a different series should use an isolated alternate interpreter rather than changing the one Ubuntu uses.
Several projects require different versions
Ubuntu documents pyenv for selecting multiple versions. It can compile versions locally with its build dependencies. Use it as a deliberate, project-level tool: select the required interpreter for a project and keep the environment separate from the system python3.
You want a separately managed Python
A manually managed interpreter can make sense for a controlled development setup, but it adds responsibility for updates, build dependencies, paths and security maintenance. It does not remove the need to preserve Ubuntu’s packaged interpreter. Keep the system version available for Ubuntu tools and place the separately managed version behind a project environment or version manager.
What not to do
- Do not remove
python3. Ubuntu says that removing the default system installation breaks system tooling. - Do not overwrite the system interpreter to satisfy one application. Use a virtual environment or version manager for that application’s requirement.
- Do not treat a missing
pipcommand as a missing Python installation. Installpython3-pipif you need the package manager. - Do not install arbitrary project packages into the system interpreter with
pip. Ubuntu’s externally managed environment protection is telling you to separate system packages from project packages. - Do not assume every Ubuntu image is identical. Minimal and custom images may omit packages that are present on a standard installation.
Troubleshooting common situations
python3 --version works, but a project says Python is missing
Check the project’s required command and version. Some project instructions expect a particular series or an activated virtual environment. Run python3 --version in the same shell where you launch the project, then create and activate .venv if the project expects isolated dependencies.
python3 -m venv .venv fails
The venv module may not be installed even though Python itself is. Add it with:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt install python3-venv
Retry the environment-creation command after the package installation completes.

pip is unavailable
Install the separate package:
sudo apt install python3-pip
For project dependencies, use it only after activating the project’s virtual environment. If Ubuntu reports an externally managed environment, stop trying to write to the system interpreter and use venv or an Ubuntu package instead.
The installed version is not the one a project requests
Do not replace Ubuntu’s default globally. Determine whether the project can run on the release’s default series. If it cannot, use pyenv or another deliberate version-management approach and bind the alternate version to that project.
apt install cannot find or download a package
This indicates a repository, release or connectivity problem. Confirm that the machine is using repositories for its Ubuntu release and that network access works. The absence of a repository package is not a reason to delete the system interpreter or compile an unrelated copy over it.
Understanding the package boundaries
It helps to separate four different questions that are often collapsed into “install Python.” The first is whether an interpreter exists at all; that is answered by python3 --version. The second is whether the standard library and basic tools are complete; that is what python3-full addresses. The third is whether you have a package manager; that is the separate python3-pip package. The fourth is whether you can create an isolated environment; that is supplied by python3-venv (or included through python3-full).
These packages are not competing ways to install Python. They are layers around Ubuntu’s release-default interpreter. Installing all three does not create three interpreters, and installing only one does not change the Python series selected for the Ubuntu release. This distinction prevents a common overreaction: downloading a second interpreter simply because one optional component is absent.
On a minimal machine, choose the narrowest layer that solves the immediate problem. Someone running an already packaged command may need only the base runtime. A developer creating environments needs python3-venv, while a workflow that retrieves packages needs python3-pip. Someone who wants IDLE or the complete class library can choose python3-full. Keeping that choice explicit makes later troubleshooting easier because every installed capability has a clear purpose.
A safe first-run sequence
Use this order when setting up a new Ubuntu machine or checking an unfamiliar image:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run
python3 --versionto identify the available series andcommand -v python3to see which executable your shell resolves. - Compare the reported series with the application’s documented requirement. A different patch number within the same series can be normal after updates.
- If the command is absent, install the repository-provided
python3package and repeat both checks. - Add only the missing development component:
python3-full,python3-piporpython3-venv. - Create
.venvin the project directory before installing project-specific dependencies. - Activate it and verify that
which python3points into.venv. - When work is complete, run
deactivate; leave Ubuntu’s system interpreter unchanged.
This sequence gives you a useful checkpoint after every change. If a command stops working, you know whether the problem is the base package, an optional module, the environment, or the project’s version requirement. It also avoids mixing package-manager files with files installed for one project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate a manual-installation proposal
Before accepting instructions that compile or replace Python, ask three questions. Does the project require a series other than Ubuntu’s default? Do multiple projects need different series at the same time? And is there a deliberate plan for selecting, updating and isolating the alternate interpreter? If the answer to all three is no, manual installation is usually unnecessary.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
If an alternate version really is required, keep the scope local. Ubuntu’s documentation points to pyenv for selecting multiple versions and notes that local compilation uses build dependencies. That approach is different from overwriting /usr/bin/python3 or removing the package Ubuntu installed. The system interpreter remains available for operating-system tooling, while the version manager supplies the project-specific choice.
Manual management also creates ongoing duties: you must track updates, retain the needed build dependencies, understand which executable each shell selects and maintain the separately managed installation. Those responsibilities are acceptable in a controlled development setup, but they are unnecessary costs and risks for a project that runs on Ubuntu’s default series.
A quick decision checklist
- Run
python3 --versionandcommand -v python3. - If both succeed, keep the system interpreter.
- If the command is absent, install
python3withapt. - If you need the complete library or IDLE, install
python3-full. - If you need the package manager, install
python3-pip. - If
python3 -m venvis unavailable, installpython3-venv. - For project dependencies, create and activate
.venvinstead of modifying the system interpreter. - For a nondefault or multiple Python series, use
pyenvor another deliberate version manager while preserving Ubuntu’s defaultpython3.
Bottom line for Ubuntu users
You normally do not install Python manually on Ubuntu. The supported installation already supplies Python 3, with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS currently listing 3.12 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS listing 3.10 as their default series. Install only the missing capability—python3-full, python3-pip or python3-venv—and use a virtual environment for project packages. Manual or alternate-version installation is reserved for projects that genuinely require a different or multiple Python series, and it should never replace the interpreter Ubuntu uses for its own tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Python already installed on Ubuntu?
Usually. Supported Ubuntu installations include the python3 package as part of the default system installation. Confirm with python3 --version and command -v python3; minimal, custom or damaged images are the main exceptions.
Do I need to install Python on Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04?
Not normally. Ubuntu’s current table lists Python 3.10 as the default series for 22.04 LTS and Python 3.12 for 24.04 LTS. Patch releases can change through updates, but the interpreter is already supplied on a standard installation.
Why does Python work when pip is missing?
Ubuntu packages the interpreter and its package manager separately. Install python3-pip when your development workflow needs pip. Keep project packages out of the system interpreter by using a virtual environment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need python3-venv?
Install python3-venv if python3 -m venv .venv says the module is unavailable. The package provides virtual-environment support for Ubuntu’s default Python series; python3-full also includes that support.
Should I use apt or install Python manually?
Use Ubuntu’s apt packages for the system interpreter and any Ubuntu-packaged components. Consider a version manager such as pyenv only when a project needs a nondefault series, several versions, or a deliberately separate interpreter.
Can I remove Ubuntu’s default python3 after installing another version?
No. Ubuntu explicitly warns that removing the default python3 package breaks system tooling. Keep it installed and place alternate versions in project environments or under a version manager.
What does an externally managed environment warning mean?
It means Ubuntu is protecting its package-managed Python from arbitrary system-wide pip changes. Use an Ubuntu package when one exists, or create and activate a venv before installing dependencies for a project.
Is python3-full required for ordinary Python scripts?
No. The base interpreter can run scripts. Choose python3-full when you need the complete class library, virtual-environment support and the basic IDLE IDE; otherwise install only the narrower missing package.
The Bottom Line
On a normal Ubuntu installation, Python 3 is already present. Verify it first, add only python3-full, python3-pip or python3-venv as needed, and isolate project dependencies with venv. Reserve pyenv or another manual setup for a genuine nondefault or multi-version requirement, and never remove Ubuntu’s system python3.
