An Elytra is found in the treasure room of an End Ship inside an End City in the outer End islands. After defeating the Ender Dragon and reaching those islands through an End gateway, equip it in your chest slot, jump from a ledge, and press jump again while falling to start gliding. Ordinary firework rockets extend and accelerate the flight; rockets made with firework stars can explode and hurt you.

What an Elytra does
An Elytra is a chest-slot item that changes a fall into a controllable glide. It does not provide true powered flight by itself: you need a drop, a ledge, or another source of falling momentum to deploy it. Once the wings open, your normal movement controls steer your character through the air. Firework rockets provide the forward or upward boost that makes long-distance travel practical.

The item is valuable because it turns the End, the Overworld and the Nether into connected travel routes instead of long ground journeys. It is also fragile. Flight drains durability, and a failed launch over the void can end a world quickly, so finding one is only the beginning of learning to use it safely.
Where to find an Elytra
The only natural location is the treasure room of an End Ship that generated beside an End City in the outer End islands. An End City without a ship does not contain an Elytra, so reaching a city is not enough; you must continue searching until you find the ship structure and board it.

The route has four milestones:
- Enter the End and defeat the Ender Dragon.
- Use the End gateway that becomes available to reach the outer End islands.
- Search those islands for End Cities, checking each city for a connected End Ship.
- Enter the ship’s treasure room and take the Elytra from its item frame.
Defeating the dragon does not place an Elytra in the central island or in the dragon’s arena. The ship search is a separate expedition through the outer islands.
Prepare before entering the outer End
A prepared expedition is faster than a rushed recovery mission. End Cities are vertical, shulkers defend their rooms, and the islands are surrounded by the void. Pack for both combat and an accidental fall.
Core equipment
- Blocks: Use them to bridge gaps, make cover from shulker projectiles and create a safe launch platform on the ship.
- Food: Bring enough to restore health after fights and to recover from a bad landing.
- Ranged protection: A bow or crossbow lets you attack shulkers without standing beside an exposed edge.
- An ender pearl: Keep one ready for an emergency teleport to a ledge or platform. Aim deliberately; a missed pearl can be as dangerous as the original fall.
- Recovery supplies: Carry spare blocks and a route back to the gateway. A marked path or distinctive bridge helps you find your way through similar-looking islands.
Set a safety standard
Before crossing a bridge or climbing a tower, decide where you will retreat if levitation starts. Do not fight with your back to the void. Clear a small platform before opening a chest or stepping onto the ship’s deck, and place blocks beside narrow walkways so a shulker hit cannot send you straight over an edge.
Step-by-step: reach an End Ship and claim the Elytra
1. Defeat the Ender Dragon
The outer-island route begins after the dragon is defeated. Bring the equipment you normally use for the boss fight, then confirm that the battle is over before leaving the central island. The gateway route is safer when you are not trying to fight the dragon and explore at the same time.
2. Enter the End gateway
Find the gateway on the central End island and use an ender pearl to enter it. You will be transported to the outer islands, where End Cities and End Ships generate. Build a small landing platform immediately if the arrival point is cramped or exposed.
3. Search the outer islands systematically
Choose a direction and record the islands you have checked. End Cities are tall, branching structures; an End Ship is a separate vessel that may be positioned beside a city rather than directly in its main tower. From a high point, scan the horizon for the ship’s distinct hull and mast before committing to a long bridge.

A systematic search avoids repeatedly returning to the same city. Mark cleared locations with blocks, torches or a written coordinate note, and keep a route back to the gateway. If cheats or external mapping tools are allowed in your world, a locating method can reduce travel time, but it changes the challenge and should be treated as an optional shortcut rather than part of the survival route.
4. Clear the city before crossing to the ship
Shulkers fire homing projectiles that can inflict levitation. Kill the shulkers guarding the approach and place cover along the bridge between city and ship. If levitation starts, move toward the nearest solid platform rather than trying to continue the fight in midair. A few blocks placed under a walkway can turn a lethal drop into a recoverable landing.
5. Board the End Ship
Approach the ship from a protected ledge, then bridge the final gap if necessary. Clear the deck and interior room by room. The treasure room is the objective; do not leave the ship after finding other loot without checking that room.
6. Take the Elytra and leave deliberately
The Elytra is displayed in an item frame in the treasure room. Break the frame or remove the item, place the Elytra in your chest slot, and secure the ship before attempting a flight. Your first launch should not be an improvised jump from the highest mast. Make a broad, unobstructed platform over land or a large water area and keep blocks, food and spare rockets in your hotbar.
How to equip and activate an Elytra
- Open your inventory and move the Elytra into the chest armor slot. It will not deploy while it is merely in your inventory or held in your hand.
- Stand on a clear ledge with room to move forward. Avoid ceilings, towers and nearby cliff faces.
- Step or jump off the ledge. While your character is falling, press the platform’s jump key again. The wings open and the fall becomes a glide.
- Use the ordinary movement controls to aim. Make gentle corrections first; abrupt turns near terrain are the most common cause of a crash.
Keyboard, controller and touchscreen bindings differ between Java, Bedrock, console and mobile editions, and players can remap them. The reliable rule is the same on every platform: equip the item, begin falling, then use that edition’s jump button once more. Test the binding over a safe area before attempting a long trip.
Gliding technique: control altitude before speed
Start with a short glide
For practice, launch from a low ledge over land or water and aim to touch down within sight of the starting point. Watch how quickly the ground approaches when you pitch downward and how much distance you cover when you hold a shallow angle. This teaches the timing needed to deploy the wings without spending rockets.

Use smooth steering
Normal movement controls steer the Elytra, but the wings respond best to gradual changes. Turn early when approaching a tower or cliff. If you wait until the obstacle fills your view, a sharp correction can point you into the wall instead of around it.
Brake by pitching upward
When you need to slow down, raise your flight path gradually. The upward pitch trades forward speed for altitude and gives you time to choose a landing surface. Do not attempt to brake by turning sharply into a wall or by aiming directly at the ground.
Boost only after the glide is stable
A rocket is most useful once the wings are already open and you have a clear line ahead. Stabilize the direction, check for ceilings and cliffs, then trigger the boost. Starting a boost while facing a structure can turn a useful acceleration into an immediate collision.
Which rockets are safe?
Use ordinary firework rockets crafted without firework stars. They provide the forward or upward boost needed for sustained travel. A rocket that includes a firework star has an explosion effect; that explosion can damage the player during Elytra flight and is an avoidable risk.

Keep rockets in an easy-to-reach hotbar slot and count them before takeoff. A flight plan that depends on one final boost is unsafe: reserve enough for a correction, a climb over an obstacle and the return leg.
Three practical flight styles
Unpowered gliding
This costs no rockets and is ideal for short descents, landing practice and conserving supplies. It is slower and loses altitude, so select a landing area before launching.

Intermittent boosting
Glide until the angle is stable, use a short boost, then reassess. This balances speed and rocket use and gives you frequent chances to steer around terrain. It is the best default style for exploring unfamiliar areas.
Continuous long-distance travel
Repeated boosts maintain speed and can carry you between distant landmarks, but they leave less time to react. Use this only above open terrain or water, with spare rockets, a known destination and enough durability for the entire route.

Survival checklist for every launch
- Clear the launch area and confirm that the first glide is over land or water.
- Equip the Elytra in the chest slot and verify that rockets are ordinary, non-explosive fireworks.
- Carry spare rockets, blocks, food and an ender pearl.
- Check the durability bar before leaving and repair before a long route.
- Keep distance from shulkers. Levitation beside an exposed edge can carry you into the void.
- Steer away from cliffs, towers and cave ceilings before activating a boost.
- Practice braking by pitching upward gradually rather than turning sharply into terrain.
- Keep a safe landing area in sight whenever possible; do not commit to a descent you cannot reverse.
Elytra durability and repairs
Flight decreases Elytra durability. The reference entry for the item lists 432 durability points. Minecraft’s official guidance says that one phantom membrane restores about 25 percent of the Elytra’s durability, which is approximately 108 points from a full 432-point item; the percentage is an approximate restoration, not a promise of an identical result in every interface or version.

Use Unbreaking to stretch each repair
Unbreaking is a useful durability enchantment because it reduces how quickly the item wears during use. It does not replace repairs: continue watching the durability bar and service the Elytra before a long crossing rather than waiting until the item is nearly unusable.
Plan repairs around the trip
Repair at home before a major End expedition, carry membranes when you expect repeated flights, and leave a reserve for the return journey. An Elytra that is safe for a short scouting glide may not have enough durability for a rocket-powered crossing to a distant base.

The wings do not open
Confirm that the Elytra is in the chest slot, not your inventory. Step off a ledge and press the jump key while falling; pressing it while standing on solid ground does not deploy the wings. If the key still does nothing, check that you are using the correct Java, Bedrock, console or touchscreen binding and that it has not been remapped.

The rocket hurts you
Remove firework-star rockets from the flight hotbar. Use ordinary rockets made without stars. Their explosion effect is the problem, not the Elytra.

Stop diving toward the ground, pitch upward gradually and select a landing area. Add a boost only after you have a clear line of travel. If the terrain is already close, land safely instead of trying to recover with a late, sharp turn.
A shulker sends you over an edge
Move toward cover or a broad platform, use blocks to create a wall and keep an ender pearl available for a reachable ledge. Clear the surrounding shulkers before returning to narrow bridges or the ship’s deck.
You run out of rockets
Switch to unpowered gliding, descend toward the nearest safe surface and avoid launching again until you have restocked. Treat rockets as a reserve for steering and recovery, not only as a speed item.
The Elytra is nearly broken
Stop the trip and repair with phantom membranes in an anvil, experience through Mending, or a second Elytra. Continuing a long flight with a nearly depleted durability bar turns a manageable maintenance issue into a dangerous landing problem.

For a first expedition, the safest combination is systematic searching, intermittent boosts and membrane or Mending maintenance. Once you know the route and have a spare Elytra, continuous boosting becomes a reasonable speed choice over open terrain.
Edition and control notes
The activation principle is shared across Minecraft editions, but the visible button label and default binding can differ between Java, Bedrock, console and touchscreen versions. Treat “press jump while falling” as the mechanic and verify the actual button in your Controls or controller settings. Remapped controls, accessibility layouts and third-party input devices can change the key without changing how the Elytra works.
Because flight is sensitive to timing, test a new control layout from a low ledge above water or a wide field. Once you can deploy, steer, boost and brake reliably there, move to End City bridges and void-side routes.
