Yes. Metro Exodus’s free upgrade is for people who already own the game on the relevant platform or PC store. On PC, the Enhanced Edition is a separate library item—not a patch—while PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners can upgrade their existing game for free. New players must buy the game first.
What you get depends on your platform
| Platform | What ownership entitles you to | How to access it |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Existing owners receive the PC Enhanced Edition. The publisher’s 2021 announcement named Epic Games Store, Steam, and GOG; it also listed Windows Store. Steam’s current listing describes the owner entitlement. (publisher announcement; Steam listing) | Look for a separate Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition item in the library for the store where you own the game. |
| PlayStation 5 | The publisher announced a free upgrade for current owners. (publisher announcement) | Check the upgrade option associated with the same platform account or store. |
| Xbox Series X|S | The publisher announced a free upgrade for current owners. (publisher announcement) | Check the upgrade option associated with the same platform account or store. |
How the PC Enhanced Edition works
The PC Enhanced Edition is a separate product in your library because the technical changes were too extensive to deliver as a patch, according to the publisher’s 2021 announcement. Existing owners should check the library of the store where they bought Metro Exodus. If you do not own the game, buying it grants access to the standard and Enhanced versions, as described in the publisher announcement.

The PC Enhanced Edition requires a ray-tracing-capable GPU. The publisher says ray tracing must be enabled for this edition, and Steam lists compatible NVIDIA RTX or AMD RX graphics hardware. This requirement applies to the PC Enhanced Edition; it should not be confused with the requirements for the standard PC edition. (publisher announcement; Steam listing)
The base game and expansions are separate entitlements
Owning the base game gives you the corresponding base-game upgrade; it does not grant the Enhanced versions of The Two Colonels or Sam’s Story unless you also own those expansions. On PC, the publisher and Steam say the Enhanced DLC entitlement follows ownership of the Expansion Pass or the individual expansion. (publisher announcement; Steam listing)

#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced for PlayStation 5 - optimized for platform specific features including 60 FPS up to 4K resolution, Ray traced lighting and Dual sense haptic feedback support.
- Experience sandbox survival - flee the shattered ruins of Dead Moscow and follow a gripping story that links together classic Metro gameplay with huge, non-linear levels.
- Deadly combat and stealth - scavenge and craft in the field to customize your arsenal of hand-made weaponry, and engage human and mutant foes in thrilling tactical combat.
- Explore a hostile world - Embark on journey that spans an entire year through Spring, Summer and Autumn to the depths of nuclear Winter. Discover the Russian wilderness, brought to life with day/ night cycles and dynamic weather
What to check if your upgrade is not showing
- Confirm where you own the game. On PC, open that store’s library and look for a separate PC Enhanced Edition listing. On PlayStation or Xbox, check the upgrade option through the account or store associated with your game.
- Check what you own. A base-game entitlement does not include the two story expansions’ Enhanced versions.
- For a disc, cross-generation, region, or subscription situation, check the platform’s upgrade prompt. The publisher’s announcement confirms free upgrades for current owners but does not spell out every edge case for those situations; consult the platform’s displayed eligibility or the publisher’s current support materials.
Do you need to buy the game again?
No, if you already own Metro Exodus on the relevant platform or store and the platform recognizes that ownership. A new player does need to buy the game to receive the entitlement. The publisher also announced a physical Complete Edition for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 that includes the base game and both story expansions; that is a purchase option, not a requirement for an eligible owner to claim the upgrade.
