Before buying a preowned game, verify the exact title and platform, then check the copy’s edition, region, condition, authenticity, compatibility, completeness, and the seller’s return terms. A used game disc or cartridge is a different purchase from a used console: warnings about suspended hardware and service access matter mainly when the listing includes a console.
Start by confirming exactly which game is for sale
Match the listing to the console you own and the version you want. Check the title, platform, physical format, edition, region, language, and any stated version. A front-of-box photo may not show the platform or region clearly, so ask for photos of the case spine, back, disc or cartridge, and any identifying labels if those details are missing.
Do not rely on a similar title or cover. Amazon’s US trade-in criteria, for example, require the item to match the selected title, platform, and version; use that as a useful reminder to verify the item itself against the listing, not as a guarantee about an individual seller’s copy. Inspect the disc or cartridge and verify playability
Ask for clear, well-lit photos of the actual item rather than stock images. Visible damage can help you rule out a poor purchase, but appearance alone cannot prove a game will run.

For discs
- Look for cracks, especially around the center hub, and deep or extensive scratches on the reading surface.
- Check that the disc sits correctly in its case and that the hub is not broken.
- If practical, ask the seller to demonstrate that it loads and plays on a compatible console.
For cartridges
- Inspect the shell and label for cracks, damage, peeling, or signs of poor-quality printing.
- Check that the contacts do not appear damaged, and ask whether the cartridge fits and runs in a compatible console.
Amazon’s condition criteria call for all discs or cartridges to be present, expected gameplay, and no cracks or major scratches. These are condition checks, not a technical rule for deciding whether a particular scratch makes a copy unplayable. Amazon Electronics Condition Criteria
Check authenticity using platform-specific clues
Counterfeit warning signs differ by platform, and no single visual clue guarantees that a game is genuine. Compare the item with the relevant platform maker’s guidance rather than treating one brand’s indicators as universal.

Nintendo games
Nintendo advises buyers to examine cartridge and packaging print quality, look for expected packaging or instructions, check for Nintendo quality seals, and confirm the region and language. Xbox discs
Microsoft says an authorized Xbox game disc has a hologram around the center hub displaying the Xbox logo. It also identifies blurry printing, spelling errors, poor print quality, or incorrect logos as warning signs; the case’s opening edge should have a Certificate of Authenticity. Confirm region, language, and DLC compatibility
Imported copies may not work or be supported in the same way as local editions. Rules vary by platform, generation, and title, so check the official compatibility guidance for the exact game and console before buying.
Nintendo Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, with an exception for consoles and cards distributed in China. Nintendo cautions that overseas software may not receive full service and support, recommends software made for the console’s region, and says downloadable content must match the region of the game. For any platform, confirm that the copy’s region and language suit you, and that any DLC you plan to buy is compatible with that version. A matching title name does not by itself establish that an import, edition, or add-on will work as intended.

Compare the listing’s description with what is physically included. If the seller advertises a case, manual, map, bonus item, or other contents, ask for confirmation or a photo. A game can be playable without its original packaging, but missing items matter if they are part of the deal you are paying for.

Ask whether any advertised download code, bonus, subscription trial, or online pass has already been redeemed. Also check whether the content you want depends on an update or an online service that is still available. Do not assume a used physical copy transfers another person’s account, DLC entitlement, or redeemed code; the status of a particular code or service must be confirmed for that title.
Evaluate the seller and the transaction terms
Review the seller’s history and ask for a short test video or an in-person demonstration when feasible. Before paying, confirm the return window, the process if the game will not read, and who pays return shipping. A low price offers little value if you cannot resolve a faulty or misdescribed purchase.
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends checking seller reputation, requesting video proof that a product has been tested, and inspecting it carefully. It also warns that used PlayStation products bought from third parties may not be covered by PlayStation’s warranty. That warranty caution applies to the product and seller arrangement; do not assume official coverage simply because the item carries a PlayStation brand. PlayStation Buying Guide (US)
PlayStation also warns that lost or stolen products may be suspended from its services. This is especially relevant when the listing includes used hardware, such as a console—not a reason to assume a standalone game disc is suspended.

Compare listings on the details that affect value
When you have several copies to choose from, compare them on the same terms. Then weigh the total price against a new or digital copy using prices available to you; no general savings amount can be assumed.

- Has the seller demonstrated that it plays, or explained why testing is not possible?
- Does the copy’s region and language suit your console and preferences?
- Are advertised codes, DLC, or online features confirmed, rather than assumed to be available?
- Do you know what is included, how returns work, and whether any warranty applies?
