No—you can start Death Stranding 2: On the Beach without finishing the first game. The sequel includes an in-game story recap for newcomers and returning players. Play the original first if you want the fullest context for its characters and journey; if you’re short on time, use the recap and the sequel’s Corpus to catch up.
What to know before starting the sequel
The first Death Stranding follows Sam Porter Bridges as he reconnects the divided United Cities of America, outpost by outpost, through the Chiral Network. The sequel takes place 11 months after the original. PlayStation’s May 2025 hands-on report describes Sam living quietly with Lou before an incident sets him on a journey that begins in Mexico and continues to Australia. The sequel’s official page says it provides a summary of the original’s story so newcomers can understand the events leading into the sequel. How to catch up in Death Stranding 2
- Open the recap from the main menu. PlayStation says the brief recap covers key characters and events from the first game and is intended for both newcomers and returning players.
- Consult the Corpus when a name or term is unfamiliar. It provides explanations of people and terminology from the series.
- Return to Story So Far as the plot develops. The page can be revisited during the game, so you do not have to memorize every detail before starting. See PlayStation’s beginner’s guide for the recap and Corpus features.
Should you play the first game first?
Choose the original first if you want to meet its characters and follow Sam’s original journey in full before seeing where the sequel takes him. It is an optional route, not a prerequisite. If you want that fuller context, look for an edition compatible with your platform—such as Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5—and verify the current store listing before buying.

If you mainly want to get into the sequel, start there and use its built-in tools. The recap is an official alternative to playing the predecessor first; it does not replace the experience of playing the original yourself.
