Start with the handheld’s exact model and hardware revision, then verify the SSD’s physical length, interface and protocol in that model’s official specifications or service manual. A drive that fits the slot may still be electrically incompatible. Do not treat the handheld’s charger rating or processor power figure as an SSD power limit: the official documents cited here do not establish a replacement-drive power ceiling across these devices.
What to check before buying an SSD
Use documentation for the exact model or machine type—not just a product-family name. Confirm each of these details before choosing a drive:

- Physical format and mounting point: M.2 length is commonly written as four digits, such as 2230, 2242 or 2280. The drive must match the supported length and screw position.
- Interface and protocol: Check whether the slot requires PCIe NVMe or supports another protocol. M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that every M.2 drive will work.
- PCIe generation: Match the device documentation where it specifies a generation. Do not assume a newer drive or slot generation is supported unless the manufacturer says so.
- Capacity: Confirm the supported capacity for the precise configuration or SKU. A capacity listed for one offered or tested configuration is not automatically a guarantee for every model in the family.
- Physical clearance: Check the manual for single- or double-sided drive restrictions, shields, and nearby components. If clearance is not documented, do not infer it from drive length alone.
- Power and thermals: Look for explicit SSD power or thermal guidance in the device documentation, then compare it with the drive manufacturer’s specifications. If the handheld’s manual gives no limit, seek manufacturer guidance rather than guessing.
Examples: SSD size and interface vary by handheld
These examples show why model-specific checks matter. They are not universal recommendations for every handheld in a brand’s lineup.
| Handheld and source scope | Documented SSD format and interface | Capacity information |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023) | ASUS lists a PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230 drive in its product specifications. The service manual states that the 2230 slot does not support M.2 SATA SSDs. | ASUS lists 512GB for the specified product configuration; confirm the exact model and current documentation before generalizing. |
| ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X | ASUS’s October 15, 2025 upgrade guide identifies M.2 2280 drives for these named models. | Not stated in the cited upgrade guide. |
| Legion Go S 8ARP1 and 8APU1 | Lenovo’s PSREF specifies M.2 2242, PCIe NVMe, PCIe 4.0 x4. | Lenovo lists 512GB and 1TB offerings and says supported capacity is based on tests with its current storage offerings. Check the exact configuration. |
| Legion Go Gen 2 | Lenovo’s user guide lists M.2 2242 or 2280 slot type. Its PSREF configuration listing specifies a 2242 SSD. | Maximum supported storage can vary by configuration; verify the machine type model rather than relying on a family-level page. |
How to verify the right drive for your model
- Identify the handheld precisely. Record the full model name, hardware revision or machine type model, and region if the manufacturer distinguishes configurations.
- Open the official specification, service manual or upgrade guide. Search within it for “SSD,” “M.2,” “storage” and “replacement.” Prefer the service procedure or model-specific guide when it gives more detail than a family overview.
- Match the drive’s full specification. Compare its M.2 length, key/interface, NVMe or SATA protocol, PCIe generation, capacity, and physical construction with the handheld’s documentation. For example, an M.2 2230 SATA drive is not interchangeable with an NVMe-only slot just because its length matches.
- Check fit and cooling details. Look for stated clearance, drive-side restrictions, shields and thermal instructions. If the manufacturer does not specify a point you need to know, ask its support channel or choose a drive whose dimensions and construction are explicitly supported.
- Check power separately. Compare the SSD’s power information with any explicit limit in the handheld documentation. If no replacement SSD limit is published, neither the charger’s wattage nor the APU’s power rating establishes one.
- Confirm the exact capacity and configuration. Treat capacities in a spec sheet as configuration-specific or tested offerings unless the manufacturer explicitly defines them as a maximum for your precise model.
Why charger wattage does not tell you the SSD limit
A charger rating describes the power adapter, not the allowable power draw of an individual replacement SSD. Likewise, a processor or graphics power figure is not an SSD specification. The official documentation cited for the ROG Ally and Legion Go examples establishes sizes and interfaces, but does not provide a shared or comprehensive replacement-SSD power ceiling. Avoid claims that a particular drive is “low power,” compatible or cool-running unless its manufacturer’s specifications and the handheld’s guidance support that conclusion.

Plan the installation and data recovery
Follow the procedure for your handheld
ASUS’s October 15, 2025 guide recommends reinstalling Windows from scratch for the named ROG Ally upgrade procedure. It also describes using an external SSD enclosure to clone the existing drive if you want to keep its data. An enclosure must match the old drive’s interface and physical format; an enclosure for a different M.2 protocol or size may not work.
The ASUS guide lists a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a thin plastic opening tool. Follow the model-specific instructions and avoid forcing a case or connector. A procedure for one Ally model should not be assumed to apply to another.

Check warranty guidance for the specific brand
Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance discourages opening or modifying the device and says damage resulting from doing so is not covered under its product warranty. That is Valve’s guidance for Steam Deck; it is not a general warranty rule for other manufacturers. Check the terms and support information for your own device before opening it.

When compatibility is still uncertain
- If documentation lists only the family name, find the page for the exact machine type or hardware revision.
- If length is clear but protocol is not, do not buy on length alone; get confirmation from the manufacturer.
- If capacity, clearance or power limits are unstated, treat them as unconfirmed rather than inferring them from another model or from a charger rating.
- If you plan to clone the old SSD, verify that the enclosure supports the old drive’s protocol and size before relying on it for recovery.
