Konami has not directly stated that previous entries are unnecessary: its official description introduces a new protagonist, Simon Ordell, on a remote Scottish island, while producer Motoi Okamoto says the story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f. Earlier games may still provide useful franchise context, but nothing officially identifies one as a prerequisite.
The practical answer: start with Townfall if it is the game you want
Silent Hill: Townfall is presented around Simon Ordell, an outsider who arrives at St. Amelia, a remote island off the coast of Scotland. That premise gives a new player a specific character and location to follow rather than placing them in the middle of an identified continuing storyline. Konami has not announced that you must know a previous protagonist, solve an earlier game’s ending, or understand a particular historical event before beginning.

Konami’s official details describe the project’s relationship to other recent entries, but the publisher has not issued a formal statement saying, “You do not need to play previous games.” The distinction matters: Konami’s announcements do not establish whether the finished game includes optional references, returning ideas, or Easter eggs that longtime fans may recognize.
If you are choosing between buying Townfall now or first working through the entire series, the sensible default is to play Townfall first and treat older games as optional background. If you already enjoy the series and want to revisit it, earlier games can enrich your appreciation without being a gate you have to pass.
#1 Best Overall
- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
- Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
- Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
- Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged
Why the story setup supports a direct start
Simon Ordell is a new viewpoint character
Konami identifies Simon Ordell as the protagonist and describes him as an outsider arriving at St. Amelia. Nothing in the official descriptions identifies him as a continuation of a previous playable character. That makes the opening situation legible to someone who has never controlled a Silent Hill protagonist: you are introduced to a person entering an unfamiliar place, and the setting can be explained through his experience.
“New protagonist” does not prove that the game has no connections to earlier fiction. It does mean that you are not being asked to remember an old character’s personal history just to understand who is on screen. Any additional connections should be treated as discoveries within Townfall, not as prerequisites established by Konami.
St. Amelia changes the geographic frame
The game’s official setting is St. Amelia, a remote island off Scotland. That is a different starting location from the settings associated with the recent games specifically named by Konami. A distinct place gives the story room to establish its own local circumstances, people and rules before a player needs to interpret them.

Geography alone cannot tell you whether the series’ wider mythology appears. It does make a first playthrough easier to approach as a self-contained journey: you can learn what St. Amelia means to Simon as the game reveals it, rather than studying a map of earlier locations beforehand.

- Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
- When Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to "put things in order", he meets a city lying quietly in dense fog, seemingly abandoned, yet anything but dormant
- After venturing further to understand his connection to this place and its inhabitants, he gradually discovers fragments of the past rising to the surface
- Simon must explore, evade and survive from a first-person perspective. It uses a limited arsenal of weapons and tools, including the CRTV: a portable TV to receive unstable signals
- The dodging is tension, the battles are hectic and the story-based puzzles reveal a truth that does not want to remain hidden
Konami describes variation while retaining the series’ feeling
In a February 12, 2026 PlayStation.Blog interview, Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto said: “While the story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill f, this game will still retain the feeling of Silent Hill that players are familiar with.”
That wording separates two ideas. The story and setting may differ, so earlier games are not presented as required narrative chapters. At the same time, the familiar feeling signals continuity of identity: returning players can bring expectations about the kind of atmosphere and tension the name represents, while new players can encounter those qualities without prior homework.
What is known—and not known—about continuity
No official prerequisite has been named
Konami’s public descriptions do not list Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, or any other earlier title as required preparation. They also do not publish a recommended play order for Townfall. Therefore, claims that a particular game is mandatory go beyond what Konami has stated.
References and Easter eggs remain an open question
Konami’s announcements do not settle whether Townfall contains optional callbacks, lore links or Easter eggs from earlier entries. A newcomer should not assume that every name, image or symbol has to be decoded through older games. A returning fan should also not assume that no such details exist simply because the main setup is new. The safest expectation is that the primary plot is introduced through Simon and St. Amelia, with any extra connections left for players to discover.
“Different” does not mean “unrelated”
Okamoto’s wording says the story and setting may differ; it does not declare that Townfall is disconnected from all prior fiction. Avoid two opposite mistakes: treating the game as a required sequel, or promising that it has no continuity ties at all. Konami’s statements support neither extreme.
How the first-person design affects newcomers
It is the first full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely in first person
Konami describes Townfall as the first full-length Silent Hill game presented entirely in first person. That is a notable change in how the player receives information. Instead of learning the environment from an external camera, you experience the island from the protagonist’s eye line. You do not need familiarity with the series’ previous camera perspectives to understand the new one; it is a design choice specific to this game.
The CRTV is built into both encounters and discovery
The CRTV combines audio and video signals and serves as a central tool for encounters and story discovery. Its importance is one reason the developers connect the first-person viewpoint to the game’s structure. Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, said in a July 30, 2026 PlayStation.Blog developer interview: “For Silent Hill: Townfall, a first-person viewpoint was an indispensable foundation for integrating the mechanics around the CRTV device. Honestly, the CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.”
For a new player, this means the game’s defining device should be taught through Townfall itself. You do not need to learn a CRTV system from an older title, because Konami’s description identifies it as a new central tool rather than a returning requirement. A veteran may compare the device with earlier series ideas, but that comparison is optional context, not an instruction for progress.

Should you play an older game first anyway?
Play Townfall first when you want the cleanest introduction
Choose a direct start if Simon Ordell and the Scottish-island setting are what attracted you, if you have limited time, or if you want to avoid forming expectations from unrelated protagonists and locations. This route preserves the game’s intended introductions: you meet Simon, learn about St. Amelia, and encounter the CRTV as the story presents it.
Play earlier entries first when you want franchise atmosphere
An older game can be worthwhile preparation for a player who wants to sample the series’ established tone before committing to another entry. It may also make Okamoto’s reference to the “feeling of Silent Hill” more meaningful because you have a personal point of comparison. That is a preference-based benefit, not evidence that an old game unlocks essential information in Townfall.
Use a partial introduction instead of a full marathon
If you are curious about the series but do not want to play every release, pick one earlier game that appeals to you and stop there if the experience answers your question. There is no supported requirement to complete a particular set before September 24, 2026’s launch. A long catch-up list can delay the game you actually want to play without improving your ability to follow its stated premise.

| Player situation | Recommended order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New to Silent Hill and mainly interested in Townfall | Townfall first | Its official setup introduces Simon Ordell and St. Amelia without naming an earlier-game prerequisite. |
| Interested in the franchise’s established identity before trying a new entry | One earlier game, then Townfall | Provides personal context for the series’ familiar feeling, but is optional preparation. |
| Concerned about missing hidden references | Townfall first, revisit older games later | Konami’s published information does not confirm or deny Easter eggs, so a complete pre-play checklist cannot be justified. |
| Already familiar with the series | Play Townfall directly | You can recognize possible callbacks while still approaching the new protagonist and island on their own terms. |
Release, platforms and the physical-edition choice
Konami’s June 2, 2026 U.S. announcement listed Silent Hill: Townfall for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and said that physical versions were available for PS5 pre-order. Konami’s September 24, 2026 launch notice confirmed availability on those three platforms. Since the launch date has passed, choose the platform that fits your existing library and hardware rather than delaying play to finish older entries.

A PS5 physical edition is an optional buying route for players who prefer a disc. The announcements establish its availability for PS5 pre-order in June, but they do not establish current retailer stock or any particular store’s present listing. Check the retailer’s live information before purchasing; the edition itself does not change the answer about play order.
What the franchise’s size tells you—and what it does not
Konami reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. The publisher says that total includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services. It demonstrates the scale of the franchise, but it is not a statistic about how many new players can follow Townfall, nor does it identify a canon order.
Large series often attract players at different entry points. The relevant facts here are narrower: Townfall has a newly described protagonist and location, and Konami explicitly allows that its story and setting may differ from two named games. Those facts support a direct start more strongly than a sales total does.
A newcomer-friendly plan for your first playthrough
- Begin with Townfall if its premise interests you. You do not need to postpone it for a complete series run.
- Pay attention to Simon’s situation and St. Amelia’s details. They are the stated foundations of this story, so let the game establish its own context.
- Learn the CRTV through play. It combines audio and video signals and is designed for encounters and story discovery; prior Silent Hill knowledge is not listed as training for it.
- Record unfamiliar references without stopping your progress. Because optional callbacks have not been confirmed, treat anything you do not recognize as a question the game may answer rather than proof that you missed required homework.
- Return to earlier games only if curiosity remains. They can supply additional franchise perspective after you have your own understanding of Townfall.
Final recommendation
Start Silent Hill: Townfall directly. Simon Ordell’s arrival at St. Amelia, the possible separation from the stories and settings of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f, and the game’s new first-person CRTV-centered design all point to an entry that is meant to establish its own experience. Playing earlier games is a valid optional choice for atmosphere or personal interest, but Konami’s official information does not make any of them a condition for understanding Townfall.
