Warhorse says the sequel introduces key earlier events through natural exposition during its opening hours. Playing the first game is optional, but it gives Henry’s continuing story and his relationships with returning characters more emotional context.
Can you follow Kingdom Come: Deliverance II without playing the first game?
Yes. In a July 2024 interview with Epic Games Store, lead scripter Martin Ziegler said Warhorse shaped the sequel to stand on its own and welcome new players, with natural reminders of major events from the first game in the opening hours. That is developer guidance published before release; Windows Central’s post-release guide also describes the sequel as recalling the earlier story for newcomers.

The sequel is still a continuation of Henry’s story, not a wholly separate adventure. Its ongoing threads include Henry’s personal revenge and the political conflict between Wenceslaus and Sigismund, which Ziegler said become closely intertwined. Epic Games Store’s interview with Warhorse explains the intended story approach.
Which play order should you choose?
| Your priority | Best path | What you gain or miss |
|---|---|---|
| Start the sequel now | Play Kingdom Come: Deliverance II directly | Warhorse designed it to stand on its own and provide reminders, though you will have less prior familiarity with Henry and returning characters. |
| Get the fullest character context | Play Kingdom Come: Deliverance, then the sequel | You experience Henry’s earlier progression and establish relationships that the sequel references. |
| Get a quick story orientation | Watch the Warhorse recap, then play the sequel | Windows Central describes the recap as roughly ten minutes of important cinematics and dialogue; it offers an overview, not every detail. |
For newcomers who want a shortcut rather than the full original, Windows Central’s play-order guide links to Warhorse’s story recap.

What does the first game add?
The original establishes Henry’s earlier experiences and his bonds with characters who return in the sequel. Those connections can make familiar faces and continuing personal stakes feel more meaningful. You do not need that groundwork to begin, but it is the better choice if you want to see the arc from its start rather than rely on the sequel’s reminders.
If you are deciding whether the original’s story is worth your time, Epic Games Store reported in 2024 that Kingdom Come: Deliverance had sold more than six million copies. That is a reported figure for the first game at that time, not a current sales total.

Is the recap enough instead of playing the original?
It is a reasonable compromise if you want a little background without committing to the earlier game. The recap is brief and focuses on important scenes, so it should not be treated as a complete substitute for playing through Henry’s first adventure. If your main goal is simply to start the sequel, Warhorse’s newcomer-oriented opening is another option.
