They add optional context about the series and its returning characters, but the adventure centers on a new protagonist, Rook.
Can you start The Veilguard as a newcomer?
Yes. BioWare describes The Veilguard as a character-driven RPG that begins with creating Rook. You choose Rook’s class, lineage, gender, appearance and faction, then follow their adventure with a new group of companions. EA’s launch description likewise presents Rook and the new adventure as the focus; neither official description says that finishing or knowing an earlier game is required.
The game launched on October 31, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, according to EA’s announcement.
What do earlier games add?
Playing earlier entries can give you more familiarity with the series’ history and characters, including the Inquisitor and Solas. That extra background may make some returning characters and references more meaningful, but it is optional context rather than a prerequisite for understanding who you play as: The Veilguard puts Rook at the center of its story.

- This video game is an immersive action role-playing game (RPG). Play Dragon Age: The Veilguard and become the leader others believe in
- SAVE A BATTERED WORLD - Enter Thedas, a vibrant world of rugged wilderness, treacherous labyrinths and glittering cities. The world is teetering on a knife’s edge while corrupt gods unleash havoc across the continent. Nations war and factions splinter. Who will you trust? From the Arlathan Forest to the back alleys of Minrathous, this is a broken world. Your actions will affect the fate of Thedas forever.
- Unite THE VEILGUARD - Unite a team of seven companions, each with rich lives and deep backstories. These are characters to befriend, and even fall in love with. Among them, an assassin, a necromancer, a detective, each and all bringing their own expertise and unique abilities to the fight. You are never alone, decide who to take into battle and together face down demons, dragons and corrupt gods.
- BECOME THE LEADER OTHERS BELIEVE IN - Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance, choose your character’s backstory and begin your journey as Rook, Dragon Age’s newest hero. The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.
If you are deciding whether to play the older games, base it on how much you want that background—not on an expectation that the full history of your previous playthroughs will carry into this one.
How much does your Inquisition history carry over?
PC Gamer’s post-launch account, published November 1, 2024, describes a limited set of world-state choices tied to Dragon Age: Inquisition, rather than a broad import of decisions from all three earlier games. The account says players can customize Inquisitor details and answer three questions about their Inquisition history:
Rank #2
- Whom the Inquisitor romanced.
- Whether the Inquisition was disbanded or remained under the Chantry.
- Whether the Inquisitor vowed to stop Solas or save him from himself.
These details provide some continuity, but they are not a complete record of choices across the series. The three-question description comes from PC Gamer’s report, not an official EA feature list.

| Route | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Start with The Veilguard | You want to play this game now or meet Rook and the new companions without a series catch-up. | You may miss some historical context and recognition of returning characters. |
| Play earlier games first—or return to them later | You enjoy learning the wider setting and character histories. | It takes more time, and the available account of carryover does not promise that the full prior world state will be reflected. |
For most newcomers, the straightforward choice is to start with The Veilguard. If its characters or lore make you curious about what came before, you can explore the earlier games afterward. That is a practical recommendation, not a required play order.
