Do You Still Need a Firewall on an Ubuntu VPS?

A provider cloud firewall and Ubuntu's UFW protect different points in the network. This guide explains the defense-in-depth case, the exact safe setup order, SSH lockout recovery, game-server rules, and Docker and IPv6 checks.

Yes—most Ubuntu VPS installations should run a host firewall such as UFW even when the hosting provider supplies a cloud firewall or security group. The provider layer blocks traffic before it reaches your virtual machine; UFW enforces a second policy on the machine itself. Keeping both layers configured gives you defense in depth, protects traffic that never crosses the provider perimeter, and lets you apply host-specific rules without changing cloud settings.

Ubuntu installs UFW disabled, so enabling it is an administrative task rather than an automatic safeguard. Configure the default policies and permit your SSH path before enabling the service. Otherwise, the first activation can disconnect you and leave recovery dependent on a provider console or rescue environment.

What the two firewalls actually protect

A cloud firewall (also called a security group by some providers) is enforced in the provider’s network, upstream of the VPS’s virtual network interface. Packets rejected there never consume resources on your Ubuntu instance. Its natural boundary is the instance or virtual network edge.

UFW, the uncomplicated front end to Ubuntu’s host firewall, runs inside the VPS. It evaluates traffic after the packet has reached the guest operating system. That difference matters even when both products appear to contain the same “allow SSH, allow web” rules.

Question Cloud firewall or security group UFW on Ubuntu
Where is the rule enforced? In the provider’s network, before the instance On the VPS itself
Primary scope Instance boundary and provider network paths Host interfaces and traffic processed by the guest
Useful for internal traffic? Depends on the provider’s network model and rules Can apply host-specific restrictions, including traffic between instances on the same network
How quickly can you change it? Requires a cloud-console or API configuration change Can be changed locally on the host without editing cloud configuration
Main failure mode A broad or missing provider rule exposes the instance or blocks required traffic A wrong local rule blocks a service or your administration session

Running both does not make one redundant. It gives you two independent enforcement points. A mistake in one layer can still cause an outage, but a forgotten provider rule does not automatically defeat a correctly configured host policy, and a local rule can cover cases the provider layer cannot express.

Why a host firewall still matters on a VPS

Traffic between machines in the same network

Provider firewalls are often designed around the public instance boundary. Your VPS may also communicate over private addresses with another VPS, a database, a monitoring node, or a game-server companion service. Host rules provide a policy that travels with this particular machine and can restrict those paths even when the provider’s network policy is permissive.

Rules that are specific to one host

UFW lets you apply controls at the operating-system level, such as allowing an administration port only from particular source addresses or changing a rule quickly while investigating an incident. You can make that adjustment without coordinating a cloud-firewall edit or changing the policy of other instances that share the same provider account.

Defense in depth against configuration drift

Cloud and host configurations are maintained separately. A temporary cloud rule added for testing, an accidentally broad source range, or a new interface can leave an instance more exposed than intended. A second, deny-by-default layer limits the damage from that drift. The layers should agree on required services, but they do not have to be identical in every detail.

Ubuntu’s default state: disabled service, deny incoming policy

On Ubuntu Server, UFW is initially disabled. Installing the package does not begin filtering packets; an administrator must enable it. Current Ubuntu documentation and the UFW manual describe a default incoming policy of deny. An older community-wiki page says ports are left open by default, but that statement conflicts with the current documentation and should not be used as a setup guide.

The distinction between a policy and an active service is important: a deny-incoming default is useful only after UFW is enabled, and enabling it without first defining the correct defaults and exceptions can either leave an allow-oriented policy in place or cut off legitimate access.

Safe UFW setup order for an Ubuntu VPS

Use an existing SSH session while preparing the rules. Do not close that session until you have confirmed that a new connection works. Substitute your actual SSH port where shown; the examples assume a web server also needs HTTP and HTTPS.

  1. Set the default direction. Run sudo ufw default deny incoming and sudo ufw default allow outgoing. The first command makes unsolicited inbound connections fail by default; the second permits the host to make outbound connections unless you add more restrictive rules later.
  2. Permit administration before activation. For the standard SSH service, run sudo ufw allow OpenSSH. If SSH listens on a custom port, run sudo ufw allow <custom-ssh-port> instead. Use the port and protocol that your daemon actually uses. A rule for the wrong port does not preserve access.
  3. Add only services you intentionally publish. A web server normally needs sudo ufw allow 80 and sudo ufw allow 443. A game server, voice service, metrics endpoint, or control panel may require other TCP or UDP ports; identify those from the software’s documentation and open only the required ports. Do not open an entire range just because one application uses a single endpoint.
  4. Enable the firewall last. Run sudo ufw enable. If you have not allowed the active SSH path, this is the step most likely to lock you out.
  5. Verify the resulting policy. Run sudo ufw status verbose. Confirm that UFW reports it is active, the incoming default is deny, outgoing is allow (unless you deliberately chose another policy), and every required exception appears.
  6. Match the cloud layer. Add corresponding allow rules in the provider’s cloud firewall for SSH, web traffic, and any deliberately published application ports. The cloud layer must not block a service that UFW allows, and UFW should not be the only place where a public service is documented.

Set the defaults before enabling UFW. If you skip the deny-incoming setting, the firewall can operate in an allow mode that is less restrictive than you intended. Conversely, adding a deny rule after activation does not fix a cloud firewall that is still exposing a port; both layers must be reviewed.

How to avoid locking yourself out of SSH

Check the real SSH endpoint first

Determine whether your server uses the standard OpenSSH profile or a custom port. A custom port must be permitted explicitly before activation. If you connect through an IPv4 address, a private address, or a bastion host, make sure the rule permits the path you actually use rather than an assumed public route.

Keep a tested session open

Run the preparation commands from one SSH session, then open a second session from the same administrative network. Only after the second login succeeds should you close the first. This catches a wrong port, source restriction, or cloud rule while a working session is still available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the recovery path

If enabling UFW blocks SSH, use the provider’s out-of-band console or rescue mode to regain access, correct the rule, and then reconnect normally. The exact console name and recovery procedure vary by provider. Do not assume that a reboot will remove UFW rules; treat console or rescue access as a prerequisite before making firewall changes on a server without a second administration channel.

Designing rules for game servers and other public services

A VPS used for a game server often exposes a mixture of traffic types: player connections, an administrative interface, remote backups, monitoring, and sometimes a voice or matchmaking service. Build the policy around those roles rather than opening every port used by the operating system.

  • Keep SSH available only for administration, and restrict its source addresses when your operating model permits.
  • Publish the game’s documented listening port and protocol. Some games use UDP for gameplay, TCP for a control or query endpoint, or separate ports for each instance.
  • Keep dashboards, databases, and orchestration interfaces private unless players genuinely need public access.
  • Place any private service on a private interface or source-restricted rule when possible, then reproduce the necessary public exceptions in the cloud firewall.
  • Record each open port’s purpose. When a game instance is removed, delete its exception in both layers rather than leaving an undocumented hole.

UFW does not understand whether a packet is a legitimate player or an exploit attempt. It is a boundary control, not an application-aware game-security system. Pair it with authentication, timely patching, least-privilege service accounts, and the game’s own rate or connection controls.

Cloud firewall versus UFW: practical decisions

When the provider firewall is the only layer

Relying solely on the cloud firewall can be reasonable for a tightly managed appliance with a documented network policy, but it removes host-level protection and local flexibility. It also leaves internal-instance traffic and host-specific controls dependent on what the provider offers. For a general-purpose Ubuntu VPS, that is an avoidable gap.

When both layers are enabled

This is the normal recommendation. Use the cloud firewall as the coarse perimeter and UFW as the host policy. Keep required service definitions synchronized, but use UFW for restrictions that are meaningful only on this machine, such as a source-specific administration rule or a temporary incident response block.

When a second firewall causes confusion

Two layers can create troubleshooting work: a connection may be rejected upstream or locally, and the symptoms can look identical to an application failure. Test in order—first confirm that the cloud rule permits the source and destination, then inspect sudo ufw status verbose, and finally check that the service is listening on the expected interface and port. Maintain a written inventory so a future administrator knows which layer owns each decision.

Important edge cases to check before production

Docker-published ports

Container runtimes can install their own packet-filtering rules when publishing ports. Secondary guidance reports that published container ports may bypass ordinary UFW expectations, but the exact behavior and the recommended DOCKER-USER-based mitigation were not verified against Docker’s own documentation here. Treat every Docker-published port as a separate review item: confirm from the runtime’s current documentation how it interacts with UFW and test the resulting exposure from an external host before relying on the rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IPv6

IPv6 traffic is a separate path from IPv4. Confirm that UFW’s IPv6 handling is enabled and that your cloud firewall has corresponding IPv6 rules; otherwise a service can appear closed during an IPv4 test while remaining reachable over IPv6. The correct setting and provider interface differ by Ubuntu release and hosting platform, so verify them on the target system rather than copying an assumption from an older guide.

Temporary maintenance rules

A short-lived troubleshooting exception can outlive the incident. Add an owner and removal date to your change record, then inspect both the cloud policy and sudo ufw status verbose after maintenance. A defense-in-depth design works only when stale exceptions are removed.

Testing and ongoing maintenance

After activation, test from a network that is not the VPS itself. Verify that SSH works through the intended route, public game or web services are reachable on their documented ports, and administrative interfaces that should be private are not reachable publicly. Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately when both are enabled.

Whenever you add a service, follow the same lifecycle: identify its listening port and protocol, add the narrowest cloud rule, add the matching UFW rule, verify with sudo ufw status verbose, and test externally. Whenever you remove a service, remove both exceptions and record the change. Review the rules after operating-system upgrades, network-interface changes, container deployments, and migrations to a different provider because each event can alter the traffic path or the policy that protects it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable universal statistic showing how many VPS breaches are prevented by UFW, so firewall value should be judged by architecture and operational control rather than a headline percentage. For most Ubuntu VPS owners, the small setup effort and the independent host-level policy justify keeping UFW enabled alongside the provider firewall.
