If your Blood Moon is arriving on different days, check BloodMoonRange first. Set the range to 0 to remove the permitted delay, then set BloodMoonFrequency to the interval you want. For a Blood Moon every seven in-game days, use a frequency of 7 and a range of 0. The correct place to make that change depends on whether your server uses legacy XML properties or the newer V3.x SandboxCode settings.

The direct fix for an exact seven-day cycle

Stop the server, or use the live-setting workflow supported by your host. Set the two scheduling values so the interval is seven days and no variance is allowed:

<property name="BloodMoonFrequency" value="7" />
<property name="BloodMoonRange" value="0" />

Those entries apply to versions that still read Blood Moon rules from the older XML property list. On newer V3.x versions, the rules were moved into SandboxCode; use the host’s SandboxCode editor or the documented setgamepref method instead of inserting obsolete XML properties.

The frequency is counted from the previous Blood Moon, not from a permanent calendar anchor. After saving the active setting, restart when your host requires it and compare the next event with the day on which the previous event occurred.

What causes the day to move

BloodMoonFrequency is the base interval. BloodMoonRange allows the event to occur later than that interval. A nonzero range is therefore the intended cause of a Blood Moon that appears to “move.” It is not necessarily a malfunction or a corrupted world.

Example: frequency 7, range 1

Suppose the last Blood Moon was on day 20. With a frequency of 7 and a range of 1, the next event can occur on day 27 or day 28. If it occurs on day 28, the following window is measured from day 28, so the next event can be day 35 or day 36. The late event shifts the reference point for the next calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: frequency 7, range 0

With the same previous event on day 20, a frequency of 7 and range 0 produces the exact interval specified by the frequency: the next Blood Moon is on day 27, and subsequent events continue at seven-day intervals from the most recent event.

Why one late event can make later events look wrong

Players often expect the game to return to fixed world-day numbers after a delayed horde. The schedule instead remains relative to the previous Blood Moon. If a range allowed one event to happen late, every later calculation starts from that later day. Removing the range prevents additional variance, but it does not change the fact that the most recent Blood Moon is the reference event for the next interval.

Check the server version before editing anything

Configuration instructions differ by game version. First identify the version actually running on the dedicated server, then determine which configuration source the launch process loads.

  • Legacy configuration: Blood Moon values are read from the older XML property list.
  • Newer V3.x configuration: gameplay rules were moved into SandboxCode, so the old XML entries may be ignored.

A dedicated-server launch command can select a specific XML file with -configfile=.... If you edit a different XML file, the server can start normally while ignoring your changes. The filename shown in the launch command, or the world selected in your host panel, is the file or world you must verify before changing a value.

Version-aware procedure

  1. Record the current schedule. Note the in-game day of the last Blood Moon and the values currently shown by the server panel or configuration. This gives you a reference for verifying the next event.
  2. Stop the server or open the supported live-settings tool. A running server may not reread an XML file immediately, and some hosts overwrite manual edits when a server is stopped. Use the workflow documented by your host.
  3. Confirm the active configuration source. Check the launch command for -configfile=..., or confirm the selected world and settings profile in the hosting panel. Do not assume a similarly named XML file is active.
  4. Apply the values for your version. Use the legacy XML entries only when that version still reads them. On V3.x, change the Blood Moon frequency and range through SandboxCode or the documented setgamepref method.
  5. Save the change and restart if required. There is no single restart rule that applies to every host. Follow the panel’s live-update behavior; if it requires a restart, perform it before testing.
  6. Wait for the next event window. Measure the result from the most recent Blood Moon, because that is the schedule’s reference point.

Legacy XML: the exact entries to use

On a version that still uses the old property list, the relevant entries are:

<property name="BloodMoonFrequency" value="7" />
<property name="BloodMoonRange" value="0" />

Replace the value of 7 with the number of in-game days you want between events. Keep BloodMoonRange at 0 when you want that interval to be exact. Preserve the existing XML structure and edit the active file selected by the server’s launch command.

Common XML mistakes

  • Editing a template or backup XML instead of the file named by -configfile=....
  • Changing the frequency but leaving a nonzero range, which still permits a later Blood Moon.
  • Adding the old properties to a V3.x configuration where gameplay rules are now read from SandboxCode.
  • Saving while the panel is generating or rewriting the file, then losing the change when the server restarts.

V3.x: use SandboxCode or setgamepref

In newer V3.x versions, Blood Moon frequency and related gameplay rules are sandbox options rather than entries in the legacy property list. Open the host’s SandboxCode editor and change the frequency and range there. If you administer the server through commands, use the documented setgamepref method for those same settings.

Do not solve a V3.x problem by adding duplicate BloodMoonFrequency or BloodMoonRange lines to an old XML file. If the running version no longer reads those properties, the edit has no effect and can make troubleshooting harder because the file appears correct while the active settings remain unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After applying a SandboxCode or setgamepref change, follow the host’s rules for live updates and restarts. Verify the active values through the same interface that applied them, then test against the previous event day.

Understand the three Blood Moon controls

Setting What it controls Useful values from the documented behavior
BloodMoonFrequency The base number of in-game days between Blood Moons, measured from the previous event. 7 for a seven-day interval; 0 disables Blood Moons.
BloodMoonRange Whether the event may occur later than the base interval. 0 removes variance; a nonzero value permits a later event.
BloodMoonWarning The hour when the HUD day number turns red before the event. -1 hides the red warning indicator.

Only the frequency and range select the horde day. The warning setting changes the HUD indicator and does not choose which day the Blood Moon occurs.

Do not mistake the red HUD warning for the horde day

A red day number can appear at an unexpected hour even when the Blood Moon schedule is correct. BloodMoonWarning controls when that warning state begins; it does not move the event itself. If the horde arrives on the expected day but the red indicator appears at a time you did not expect, inspect the warning value rather than changing the frequency or range.

To hide the indicator entirely, set BloodMoonWarning to -1. This is independent of disabling Blood Moons: changing the warning value does not turn the event off.

How to disable Blood Moons

Set BloodMoonFrequency to 0 when you want to disable Blood Moon events. Set BloodMoonWarning to -1 only when you want to hide the red warning indicator. These are separate controls, so hiding the indicator does not disable the horde, and disabling the horde does not by itself describe how the indicator should behave.

Apply the disable value in the configuration system used by your server version: the active legacy XML property on older versions, or the corresponding SandboxCode or setgamepref setting on V3.x.

Troubleshooting when the day is still wrong

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The event alternates between two nearby days. BloodMoonRange is nonzero. Set the range to 0 in the active configuration system.
The setting appears correct in an XML file, but the server behaves unchanged. The running server loads a different file or version-specific settings source. Verify -configfile=..., the selected world, and whether the server is V3.x.
A late event shifts every later event. The schedule is relative to the previous Blood Moon. Use the most recent event day as the reference when calculating the next interval.
The red HUD indicator appears at an unexpected time. BloodMoonWarning controls the warning hour. Inspect the warning setting; do not change frequency to correct a warning-hour issue.
A legacy edit is ignored after a V3.x update. Blood Moon rules moved from the old property list to SandboxCode. Move the change to the SandboxCode editor or documented setgamepref workflow.
The new value is visible but the next event does not reflect it immediately. The host has not applied the live change or requires a restart. Use the host’s apply or restart procedure, then verify the active value again.

A reliable verification method

Verification is easiest when you treat each Blood Moon as a dated checkpoint rather than guessing from the warning indicator.

  1. Write down the in-game day on which the last Blood Moon actually occurred.
  2. Confirm that the active frequency is the interval you intend to use and that the range is 0 for an exact cycle.
  3. Confirm that the value was applied through the correct version-specific interface and that any required restart or live update completed.
  4. Calculate the next expected day by adding the frequency to the previous event day.
  5. When the next event occurs, record its day. If the range is zero, a different day indicates that the active settings or reference event were not what you thought they were.

For example, after a Blood Moon on day 28 with frequency 7 and range 0, the expected next event is day 35. If you instead see a day-35 horde but the red warning began earlier or later than expected, the scheduling fix worked; investigate BloodMoonWarning separately.

Server-admin checklist

  • Identify the running game version before editing settings.
  • Find the configuration source actually loaded by the launch command or host panel.
  • For an exact seven-day cycle, use frequency 7 and range 0.
  • On legacy versions, edit the active XML properties.
  • On V3.x, use SandboxCode or the documented setgamepref method instead of obsolete XML properties.
  • Remember that each interval starts at the previous Blood Moon, so a late event changes the reference day for the next window.
  • Use BloodMoonWarning only for the red HUD warning hour.
  • Use frequency 0 to disable Blood Moons and warning -1 to hide the indicator.
  • Apply the change through the host’s supported live-update or restart process, then observe the next event.

What to do if you changed settings mid-cycle

When a setting is changed after a Blood Moon has already occurred, use that most recent event as your practical reference point once the new value is active. A range value that was nonzero before the change may have allowed the previous event to occur late, so comparing the next event with an older fixed calendar day can make a correct configuration look incorrect. Record the event day, confirm the active values after the update, and evaluate the next interval from that recorded day.

If the server continues using the old schedule after the supported apply or restart step, return to the version check and configuration-source check. The two most common explanations are an edit to an inactive file and a legacy XML edit on a V3.x server.
