What docker compose up does
Compose reads the project’s configuration, creates and starts its services, and streams service output to the terminal unless you select detached mode. It can also build images before starting when asked. The command is therefore both a startup operation and a way to decide how the services are managed during that startup.

Should existing containers or images be replaced? Should Compose wait for services to become ready? Should it stop or clean up other containers? The right answer depends on whether you are developing interactively, launching a longer-running stack, or running a test in automation.
Quick reference: Compose up options
| Option | Effect | Important interaction or qualification |
|---|---|---|
-d, --detach |
Runs containers in the background rather than keeping the command attached to their logs. | Cannot be combined with --abort-on-container-exit or --abort-on-container-failure. |
--abort-on-container-exit |
Stops all containers if any one container stops. | Incompatible with detached mode. |
--abort-on-container-failure |
Stops all containers if any one exits with failure. | Incompatible with detached mode. |
--exit-code-from SERVICE |
Returns the exit code of the named service’s container. | Implies --abort-on-container-exit. |
--wait |
Waits until services are running or healthy. | Implies detached mode. |
--wait-timeout SECONDS |
Sets the maximum time to wait for the running-or-healthy condition. | The documented default in the reference excerpt is 0; set an explicit value in scripts. |
--build |
Builds images before starting containers. | Building an image and recreating a container are separate decisions. |
--force-recreate |
Stops and recreates every container, even if nothing has changed. | Use when a fresh container is required regardless of detected changes. |
--no-recreate |
Prevents Compose from applying configuration or image changes by recreating containers. | Incompatible with --always-recreate-deps. |
--always-recreate-deps |
Recreates dependent containers. | Do not combine with --no-recreate. |
-V, --renew-anon-volumes |
Recreates anonymous volumes rather than reusing old data. | Can discard data held in those anonymous volumes; do not use casually. |
--remove-orphans |
Removes containers for services no longer defined in the Compose file. | Without this option, orphaned service containers are not removed. |
--timeout SECONDS, -t SECONDS |
Sets the shutdown timeout in seconds. | Applies when attached or when containers are already running; the documented default in the reference excerpt is 0. |
--attach SERVICE |
Limits attachment to the specified service. | Different from detached mode: it controls which service output is attached. |
--attach-dependencies |
Attaches to logs from dependencies as well. | Incompatible with --attach. |
-w, --watch |
Watches source files and rebuilds or refreshes containers when files change. | Useful for a development loop; the exact watch behavior depends on project configuration. |
-y, --yes |
Answers yes to prompts. | Check the current CLI help for support and exact behavior in your installed version. |
Choose foreground or detached mode
Keep the terminal attached
With no -d option, Compose stays attached to service logs. This makes startup output visible immediately and lets you watch what each service reports. It is convenient for local development or a short-lived run where the terminal is the primary place to observe activity.

Attached mode is not the same thing as a readiness check. The command’s output may show that a process started, but if you need Compose to wait for services to be running or healthy before continuing, use --wait and an explicit --wait-timeout.
Run services in the background
Use docker compose up -d to start the services in the background and return control of the terminal. This is the straightforward choice for a stack you intend to leave running while using the shell for other work. Since logs are no longer continuously attached to the startup command, decide separately how you will inspect service output.
Recommended Free Tools
Detached mode cannot be combined with either abort option. Those options rely on the command staying in charge of the run so it can react when a container exits; detached mode returns control instead. If you need to wait for a startup condition and then proceed detached, --wait already implies detached mode.
Build images, recreate containers, or reuse what exists
Build before starting
Add --build when you want Compose to build images before it starts containers. For example:

docker compose up --build
This option concerns image building. It does not mean every container is necessarily recreated regardless of whether Compose detects a reason to replace it. When you need both an image build and a guaranteed fresh container set, combine --build with --force-recreate:
docker compose up --build --force-recreate
Force replacement or prevent replacement
--force-recreate tells Compose to stop and recreate all containers even if no change has been detected. Use it when your goal is specifically a fresh container lifecycle, not merely an image build. Conversely, --no-recreate prevents Compose from recreating containers to pick up configuration or image changes. That makes it an explicit reuse choice, not a way to apply new settings while preserving the same containers.
--always-recreate-deps controls dependent containers. It cannot be used together with --no-recreate, because one requests recreation of dependencies while the other prevents recreation. Choose the behavior that matches the update you intend rather than combining opposing lifecycle instructions.
Renew anonymous volumes carefully
-V or --renew-anon-volumes recreates anonymous volumes instead of reusing old ones. This can help when the data in an anonymous volume is stale and you deliberately want a clean volume. It also means that data stored only in the replaced anonymous volume should not be treated as preserved. Review where the service keeps important data before using this option.

Wait for services and handle exits
Wait for running or healthy
--wait makes the command wait for services to be running or healthy, and it implies detached mode. Add a maximum wait time when using it in automation so that the script has a bounded startup wait:
docker compose up --wait --wait-timeout 60
The value above is an example of an explicit 60-second limit, not a recommended universal timeout. Choose a limit appropriate to the application and the environment. The reference excerpt lists 0 as the default for --wait-timeout; do not assume that an unset value gives your script a suitable finite limit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Running” and “healthy” are distinct readiness descriptions. The option’s stated condition is that services are running or healthy; do not treat the command as proof that an application-level task has completed unless the project’s health checks and startup behavior establish that for your use case.
Stop the stack when a container exits
--abort-on-container-exit stops all containers when any one of them stops. --abort-on-container-failure does so when any one exits with failure. These options are suited to runs where the end of one service should end the rest, such as a coordinated one-off workload. They are not compatible with -d.

For test automation, --exit-code-from SERVICE returns the exit code of the named service and implies --abort-on-container-exit. A test-runner pattern is:
docker compose up --exit-code-from tests
Replace tests with the service name in your Compose configuration. The option is useful when a test container’s result should determine the command’s result. Because it implies abort-on-exit, it is not a detached launch pattern.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Attach selectively and use watch during development
Use --attach SERVICE when you want the command attached to a particular service rather than all service output. --attach-dependencies adds logs from dependencies. The two options are incompatible, so choose whether you want a named service alone or the dependency output as well.
The --watch (or -w) option watches source files and rebuilds or refreshes containers as files change. It is intended for an iterative development workflow rather than a one-time background launch. Its practical usefulness depends on the project’s watch configuration: the option alone does not specify which files should trigger which action.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Remove containers for services deleted from the file
If a service has been removed from the Compose file, its existing container can remain as an orphan. Add --remove-orphans when you want the up operation to remove containers for services no longer defined by the current file:
docker compose up --remove-orphans
This is cleanup of containers associated with removed services, not a general instruction to erase all project data. It is particularly relevant after renaming or deleting a service. Review the project configuration and target environment before using it where other, intentionally retained service containers may exist.
Set a shutdown timeout
--timeout or -t sets the shutdown timeout in seconds. It applies when the command is attached or when containers are already running. For example, docker compose up --timeout 20 supplies 20 seconds. The reference excerpt gives 0 as the default; set an explicit value when the shutdown interval matters to your workflow.
Practical command patterns
| Goal | Command | Why this combination fits |
|---|---|---|
| Start in the background | docker compose up -d |
Detached mode returns control of the terminal. |
| Build images before startup | docker compose up --build |
Requests image builds before containers start. |
| Build and guarantee new containers | docker compose up --build --force-recreate |
Combines image building with forced container recreation. |
| Wait with a bounded startup period | docker compose up --wait --wait-timeout 60 |
Waits for running or healthy and sets an explicit 60-second maximum. |
| Run a test service and return its result | docker compose up --exit-code-from tests |
Uses the named service’s exit code and implies abort-on-container-exit. |
| Clean up removed services | docker compose up --remove-orphans |
Removes containers for services absent from the current Compose file. |
These are patterns, not universal recipes. For instance, the test pattern assumes that tests is the correct service name, and the wait example’s timeout should be adjusted to the service’s expected startup time.
Options whose current behavior needs checking
Some flag details are not established as reliably as the core options above. Check the help output and reference for the Docker Compose version installed in your environment before depending on exact behavior for a script or production procedure.
--yes/-y: an available reference excerpt describes it as answering yes to prompts, but that flag description had low confidence.--no-deps: support was found only in a v1-era manual, which described it as not starting linked services. That does not establish the current Compose v2 behavior.--pulland--no-start: exact behavior was not established here; do not rely on an assumed meaning.- Exit status after interruption: a v1-era manual says the command exits 1 on error and 0 after SIGINT or SIGTERM once containers stop. That older evidence does not confirm current v2 behavior.
For dependable automation, validate every option against the actual CLI version used by the runner. A flag accepted on one machine but absent or differently described on another can turn a startup script into a compatibility failure.

Quick Recap
How to choose options without conflicting instructions
- Choose the run mode. Use attached mode when you want the startup command to display logs; use
-dfor a background launch. Do not combine detached mode with an abort option. - Decide what should change. Add
--buildfor image building. Add--force-recreateonly when all containers should be replaced regardless of detected changes. Use--no-recreateto avoid replacement, and do not pair it with--always-recreate-deps. - Define readiness and completion. Use
--waitwhen startup should pause for running-or-healthy status, and set a timeout for automation. Use an abort option when one container ending should stop the group; use--exit-code-fromwhen a named service’s result should become the command result. - Choose cleanup intentionally. Add
--remove-orphansif containers for deleted services should be removed. Use-Vonly when replacing anonymous volumes is acceptable. - Verify less-certain flags in the installed CLI. This is especially important for scripts, where a difference in flag support or exit behavior can affect later steps.
