The message usually means WordPress encountered a fatal PHP error while loading the site. It does not identify the cause: a plugin, theme, or custom code may be responsible. Start with the Recovery Mode email WordPress sent to the site administrator. If that does not identify or let you disable the failing component, use the WordPress debug log, then isolate the plugin, theme, or PHP compatibility problem. On a live site, keep public error display off, and use staging or a recent backup before making risky changes.

What the message means
“The Site Is Experiencing Technical Difficulties” is a general failure message, not a diagnosis. WordPress has hit a fatal PHP error while loading a page, but the message shown to visitors does not say which component caused it. A plugin, the active theme, or custom code may be involved. A recent update or other change is a useful lead, but it is not proof of the cause.

The wording visitors see can vary by WordPress version and hosting environment. The message is associated with WordPress’s fatal error protection feature, introduced in WordPress 5.2, but do not assume every installation displays the same text.
The useful evidence is usually in one of three places: the Recovery Mode email, the debug log, or the history of changes made just before the failure. Work from evidence rather than disabling or changing several things at once; otherwise, it becomes harder to tell which change fixed the site.

First: choose a safe recovery route
| Route | Best when | Access needed | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery Mode email | The email arrived and identifies a plugin or theme error. | Access to the site administrator’s email and WordPress login. | Lets you temporarily pause the component WordPress identified without disabling every plugin. |
| Debug log | The email is missing, unhelpful, or you need the actual error details. | Access to wp-config.php and the site files. |
Provides error information, but requires careful handling of debugging settings on a live site. |
| Rename the plugins folder | You cannot reach the dashboard and need to test whether a plugin is responsible. | File access through the host or another file-management method. | Disables all plugins at once, so it is a broad diagnostic step rather than a precise fix. |
| Restore a backup | The outage is urgent and a recent working backup is available. | Access to the host’s backup or restore process. | Can get the site back faster, but returns it to the backup’s point in time. |
If possible, make a staging copy and troubleshoot there first. If the live site is down and the outage needs immediate attention, restoring a recent backup may be the quickest route back to a working site.
Check the WordPress Recovery Mode email
WordPress often sends the site administrator an email with a Recovery Mode link after a fatal error. The link provides a way to log in while WordPress temporarily pauses the plugin or theme it identified as the problem. From there, deactivate or remove that component, then investigate or replace it before restoring normal site operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check the administrator’s inbox. Look for a message about the site error and a Recovery Mode link. If you do not see it, check any filtered or junk-mail folders available to that account.
- Open the link from the email. Use the link to access WordPress Recovery Mode and sign in with an administrator account.
- Review the component WordPress identifies. Note the plugin or theme named in the error information. Avoid making unrelated changes while testing.
- Deactivate or remove the failing component. If the site becomes available, do not assume the problem is permanently fixed. Update, replace, or repair the component, or leave it disabled if it is not essential.
- Test the site again. Check the affected page and the rest of the site. If the error continues, use the debug log and the isolation steps below.
If no email arrives, that does not establish that there is no fatal error. The server’s mail setup may have prevented delivery. Move on to the log or file-based recovery steps instead of waiting indefinitely for a message.

Enable a debug log without showing errors to visitors
When Recovery Mode is unavailable or does not reveal enough, WordPress can write errors to a log file. The WordPress Developer Resources documentation describes WP_DEBUG_LOG as a companion to WP_DEBUG that saves errors to debug.log. This can capture errors that are not displayed in a normal page load, including errors generated during AJAX requests or wp-cron runs.
- Back up the configuration file. Before editing
wp-config.php, save a copy so you can restore it if a change is mistyped. - Open
wp-config.php. It is in the WordPress installation’s files. Use the file access method provided by your host or another authorized file manager. - Add the debug constants before the stop-editing comment. Place them before the comment that says “That’s all, stop editing!” in the file:
define('WP_DEBUG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);
define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);
WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY is set to false so errors are logged rather than printed into pages. Do not display debug errors on a public live site: error output can expose file paths and other details that visitors should not see.
- Reproduce the failure if needed. Load the page or perform the action that triggers the error, if doing so is safe. A log may contain older entries as well as the current failure.
- Read the newest relevant fatal error. Look near the time the site broke. The message should point to a file path and line number; the path may identify a plugin, theme, or custom code.
- Use the path as a lead, not as the whole diagnosis. Check the named component and the timing of recent updates or other changes. If the error is not clear, share the relevant log details with the site host or the component’s support channel, taking care not to publish sensitive information.
The documented example writes to wp-content/debug.log. Treat that file as diagnostic information: do not leave debugging enabled longer than necessary, and do not expose the log publicly.

Isolate the plugin, theme, or PHP problem
Test plugins when the log points to one
If the log names a plugin, deactivate that plugin first if you can reach WordPress. If you cannot access the dashboard, renaming the plugins folder inside wp-content disables all plugins at once. This is a useful test when the site cannot be reached, but it does not tell you which plugin caused the error by itself.
- Use file access to find the
pluginsfolder insidewp-content. - Rename the folder so WordPress can no longer load the plugins from that location.
- Check whether the site loads again. If it does, a plugin is implicated, but the folder rename has not identified which one.
- Restore the folder’s original name, then enable plugins one at a time, checking the site as you go, until the failure returns or the responsible plugin is found.
- Update, replace, or leave the problem plugin disabled. If the site still fails with the plugins folder renamed, continue by checking the theme and the log rather than treating the plugin test as conclusive.
Test the active theme
If the error path points into the active theme, or the plugin test does not resolve the failure, switch to a default WordPress theme to see whether the active theme is responsible. If the site is accessible through Recovery Mode or the dashboard, make the switch there. If not, use an available staging copy or ask the host for help with a safe file-based recovery. A theme change can affect the site’s appearance, so note the current theme and test on staging when possible.
Check whether a PHP version change preceded the failure
A PHP incompatibility can trigger a fatal error, particularly if the problem began after the server’s PHP version changed. Compare the timing of the outage with recent PHP, plugin, theme, or custom-code changes. If your host offers other installed PHP versions, testing one can help determine whether compatibility is involved. Do this on staging where possible, and coordinate with the host if you are unsure which PHP versions the site and its components support.

Raise memory only when the error indicates memory exhaustion
A memory-limit change is not a general fix for this message. Only try it if the log specifically shows that PHP exhausted available memory. One suggested WordPress setting is:
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
Add it in wp-config.php before the stop-editing comment. Whether the setting can take effect depends on the hosting environment. If the error is not about memory, raising this limit is unlikely to address the underlying cause.
Restore the site and remove temporary debugging settings
Once the cause is addressed, check the site’s key pages and normal functions rather than relying only on the error message disappearing. If you changed a folder name or theme during diagnosis, return the site to its intended configuration carefully. If a fix is uncertain and the live site remains down, restore a recent working backup through the host’s restore process; be aware that a restore returns the site to the backup’s point in time.

Turn debugging back off after you have finished collecting the needed information. Remove the temporary debug constants or restore their prior settings, and verify that errors are not being displayed to public visitors. Keep a copy of any useful log details for troubleshooting, but do not leave a public debug log exposed.
When to involve your host
Contact the hosting provider if you cannot access the site files, the Recovery Mode email is not arriving and you cannot enable logging, the log points to a server-level PHP issue, or the host’s PHP settings prevent a change from taking effect. Include when the error started, the recent changes you know about, and the relevant fatal-error entry or file path. Avoid sending passwords or publishing a full log that could contain sensitive information.
