Docker Compose V2 replaces the separate docker-compose Python program with the Go-based docker compose subcommand built into the Docker CLI. The command change is visible, but the larger migration is about moving from legacy, numbered Compose file formats to the rolling Compose Specification, auditing old environment variables, checking project-name behavior, and testing automation that depended on V1 defaults. The top-level version key no longer selects a schema.

What Docker Compose V2 is
Compose lets you describe a multi-container application in YAML and operate the resulting project as one unit. You define services, networks, volumes, images, ports, dependencies and environment settings in a Compose file, then use commands such as up, down, logs and exec against that model.

Compose V1 was first released in 2014 as a standalone Python executable named docker-compose. Compose V2 was announced in 2020, rewritten in Go and integrated as a Docker CLI plugin. You invoke it with a space, not a hyphen:
docker compose up
The standalone executable may still be encountered on older machines, but Docker documents it as a legacy backward-compatibility installation. Docker’s current history also describes Compose V5, released in 2025, as functionally identical to the V2 command behavior; its principal distinction is an official Go SDK. When a migration guide says “V2,” it generally means the docker compose CLI behavior described here. Check the release documentation if you are pinning a specific implementation version.

| Installation | Standalone binary commonly used | Docker Desktop or the Linux Compose CLI plugin is the supported route; standalone is legacy |
| Environment variables | Some V1-specific variables were recognized | Several V1 variables are ignored |

This is not a requirement to rewrite every service definition. Most migrations are command, installation and compatibility audits followed by validation of the resolved model.
What changes in day-to-day operations
The new spelling affects every place where the command is stored, not only a developer’s terminal. A pipeline image, Make target, shell alias, deployment runbook or scheduled job can continue invoking V1 after local users have switched. Treat the command as part of your deployment interface: pin the intended Docker CLI and Compose installation on each runner, then make the file path and project name explicit in repeatable jobs.
The integrated plugin also changes how teams diagnose an installation problem. A missing docker-compose executable and an unavailable docker compose plugin are different failures. Run docker compose version on the actual host or CI runner that will execute the workload, rather than inferring support from a developer workstation.
The Compose Specification and the obsolete version key
The Compose Specification is the current recommended format. It merged the old 2.x and 3.x definitions instead of making you choose between them. Compose now validates a file against the current specification regardless of whether a legacy number appears at the top.
A file such as this may still parse:
version: "3.8"
services:
app:
image: example/app
However, version: "3.8" is only informative in V2. Docker documents the property as retained for backward compatibility; using it produces an obsolete-version warning rather than selecting a schema. Do not change version: "2" to version: "3" as a migration strategy. Remove the key when practical, then resolve and validate the file with the V2 CLI.
The modern equivalent is:
services:
app:
image: example/app
Removing the key does not automatically modernize unsupported options or preserve every V1 quirk. It simply stops implying that a legacy number controls interpretation. If a service relies on behavior that is not portable across implementations, test it explicitly rather than relying on the old number.

File names and project discovery
Compose continues to recognize docker-compose.yaml and docker-compose.yml for backward compatibility. The preferred names are compose.yaml and compose.yml. If a canonical and a legacy name are both present in the project directory, Compose prefers compose.yaml. That can make an apparently harmless rename change which definition a script loads.
Before switching files, inspect the directory used by each job and make the file selection explicit when needed. A migration is easier to reproduce when CI invokes the intended file with -f rather than depending on whichever filename happens to be discovered first.

Supported ways to install Compose V2
Docker Desktop
Docker Desktop includes the Compose integration. After updating Desktop, verify the command from a terminal:
docker compose version
The command should return a Compose version instead of an “unknown command” error. The exact version string varies by Desktop release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDocker Engine and the Linux CLI plugin
On Linux, install the Compose CLI plugin alongside Docker Engine and the Docker CLI using the distribution-supported Docker packages. Then run the same version check. Keep the Engine, Docker CLI and plugin on a supported combination; installing only a legacy standalone executable does not provide the integrated V2 behavior.
Standalone binary
Docker documents the standalone installation only for backward compatibility and does not recommend it for new deployments. It can be useful when an old environment cannot yet be changed, but it leaves you maintaining the legacy command path. Plan a move to Desktop or the CLI plugin instead of treating the standalone binary as the V2 installation.
Step-by-step migration from docker-compose to docker compose
- Inventory every invocation. Search shell scripts, Makefiles, CI definitions, deployment runbooks, cron jobs and developer documentation for
docker-compose. Include quoted command strings and wrapper scripts; changing only the command typed by developers leaves automation on the old path. - Install and verify the supported implementation. Use Docker Desktop or the Linux Compose CLI plugin. Run
docker compose versionon the same host, container image or runner that will execute the workload. - Make the command substitution. Replace
docker-compose <command>withdocker compose <command>. Options that belong to Compose generally remain aftercompose, while global Docker CLI options may have a different position. Re-run each job rather than assuming a textual replacement is sufficient. - Confirm file discovery. Prefer
compose.yamlorcompose.yml, and check whether both canonical and legacy names exist. Use an explicit-fpath in scripts that operate from a different working directory or combine multiple files. - Render the model before starting containers. Run:
docker compose config
config parses the YAML, resolves environment-variable interpolation, applies file merges and prints the canonical Compose model. The convert command is an alias. Save the output or inspect it in CI so a missing variable, wrong file or unexpected merge is caught before up.
- Remove or review the top-level version key. Delete it when practical. If it remains for a mixed V1/V2 estate, treat it as an informational compatibility marker, not a schema switch, and expect V2 to warn that it is obsolete.
- Audit environment variables. Compare the host environment with the unsupported V1 list below. Remove obsolete settings and replace them only with documented current Docker controls.
- Check project naming. Identify whether the project name comes from
-p,COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME, a top-levelname, or the project directory. Confirm that generated container, network and volume names still match anything referenced by scripts or monitoring. - Test compatibility mode only where required. If a workload depends on a legacy behavior, try
--compatibilitydeliberately, record the reason and test the result. Do not enable it globally without knowing which behavior it changes. - Review interactive commands. V2’s
docker compose execallocates a TTY by default. Add-Tor--no-ttyto noninteractive automation and verify exit-code handling. - Run a clean validation and rollout. Execute
config, then the project’s normal health checks, logs and shutdown procedure. Compare resource names and service reachability with the known-good V1 deployment before switching production jobs.
A safer rollout sequence
Run the migration in a disposable or staging environment before changing the production runner. First capture the old project’s effective file, project name and resource names. Then install the supported plugin, make the command substitution and render the new model with docker compose config. Compare the resolved services, interpolated values, file merges and generated names with the known-good deployment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Next, start the stack using the same explicit file arguments and project name that production will use. Check service health, inspect logs and exercise the commands that matter to operators. Include at least one noninteractive exec path if your automation uses it; a developer’s interactive shell can hide the default-TTY difference. Finally, run the normal shutdown procedure and verify that the expected project resources are addressed. Only after those checks pass should CI or production jobs switch permanently.
Keep the old invocation available during a short rollback window, but do not run both implementations against the same project name at once. Distinct project names create distinct resources, while an accidental name change can make a migration appear to have lost existing containers or networks.

Environment variables that can break a migration
Compose V2 ignores these V1-era variables:
COMPOSE_API_VERSIONCOMPOSE_HTTP_TIMEOUTCOMPOSE_TLS_VERSIONCOMPOSE_FORCE_WINDOWS_HOSTCOMPOSE_INTERACTIVE_NO_CLICOMPOSE_DOCKER_CLI_BUILD
An ignored variable is particularly dangerous because the job may continue without an obvious configuration error while silently losing a timeout, TLS selection, Windows-host behavior, interactive setting or build integration. Search both exported variables and CI secret/configuration stores. For each match, determine the current Docker-supported replacement or remove the setting if it is no longer necessary. Do not assume that preserving the variable name preserves its effect.
Project names, resource names and precedence
Compose derives a project name that prefixes resources such as networks and containers. V2 applies this precedence order:
- The command-line
-poption. - The
COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAMEenvironment variable. - The top-level
nameelement in the Compose file. - The project directory name.
Names must satisfy Compose’s lowercase, digit, dash and underscore constraints. A directory rename, a newly added top-level name, or a CI variable can therefore change resource names even when service definitions are identical.
Before migration, record the project name used by the existing deployment and search for scripts that call a generated container or network directly. Set the name explicitly at the highest appropriate precedence when stable automation matters:
docker compose -p arcade-stack up -d
Use a consistent value per environment rather than relying on a developer’s checkout directory. Be cautious when changing it: a new name creates a separate set of resources instead of adopting the old ones.
Why scripts fail after upgrading
“docker-compose: command not found”
The runner either lost the standalone binary or never received the Compose plugin. Install the supported integration and change the invocation to docker compose. Validate on the actual runner, not only on a local workstation.

A warning says the version field is obsolete
This is expected when V2 sees a top-level version. Remove the field when your compatibility plan allows; changing its number will not alter schema selection.

The wrong services or values appear
Run docker compose config from the same directory and with the same environment as the failing job. Check the selected filename, every -f argument, variable interpolation and merged output. A canonical compose.yaml can take precedence over an older docker-compose.yml.
Automation hangs at exec
V2 allocates a TTY by default for docker compose exec. In CI, use:
Recommended Free Tools
docker compose exec -T app sh -c 'your-command'
The no-TTY option prevents the command from waiting for an interactive terminal. Keep interactive developer commands unchanged if they benefit from terminal allocation.
Containers receive unexpected names
Compare the old and new project names. Check -p, COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME, the top-level name and the working directory in that order. Update scripts that hard-code generated names, or set an explicit project name as part of the deployment command.
A previously effective environment setting does nothing
Check whether it is one of the six ignored V1 variables. V2 will not honor those names; find the current Docker setting that provides the required behavior and test it independently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validation commands worth keeping in CI
A small pre-deployment sequence catches most migration errors without starting the application:
docker compose version
docker compose config
docker compose config --quiet
The first command confirms the implementation. The second prints the fully resolved model for inspection. The quiet form is useful as a parse/validation gate when the rendered YAML is not needed in job output. Follow it with the normal startup and health checks:
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs --no-color
docker compose down
Use the same project name and file arguments in every command. Otherwise, validation can succeed against one model while startup acts on another.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
What to do with compatibility mode
--compatibility is a tactical option for a workload that depends on legacy behavior. It is not a substitute for understanding the Compose Specification or updating a file. First run without it, identify the exact service or deployment difference, then test with the flag and document the dependency in the repository. Revisit that exception when the service definition or deployment platform changes.

- Docker Desktop or the Linux Compose plugin is installed on every execution host.
docker compose versionsucceeds in developer, CI and deployment environments.- All
docker-composeinvocations have been found and intentionally converted. - The preferred
compose.yamlorcompose.ymlfile is selected deliberately. docker compose configrenders the expected variables and merged services.- The obsolete top-level
versionkey has been removed or consciously retained for a mixed estate. - Ignored V1 environment variables are removed or replaced with current Docker controls.
- Project-name precedence and naming constraints have been checked.
- Noninteractive
execcalls use-Tor--no-tty. - Any use of
--compatibilityhas a documented reason and a test. - Resource names, health checks, logs and shutdown behavior match the intended deployment.
Bottom line for teams planning the switch
Do not treat this as a YAML-number upgrade. Install the integrated CLI implementation, change the command form, validate the resolved configuration, and audit the assumptions that V1 hid: obsolete environment variables, project naming and terminal allocation. Once those checks pass, the Compose Specification gives you one current schema instead of a choice between legacy 2.x and 3.x formats.

Is docker-compose the same as docker compose?
They are different command paths. docker-compose is the legacy standalone Python V1 executable; docker compose is the Go-based Compose implementation integrated with the Docker CLI. Update scripts and verify the plugin with docker compose version.
Do I need to change version: "3.8" to another number?
No. Compose V2 uses the rolling Compose Specification and ignores the top-level version value for schema selection. Remove the key when practical, or retain it only as an informational compatibility marker while a mixed V1/V2 estate is being transitioned.
Which installation should a new Linux deployment use?
Install the Compose CLI plugin alongside Docker Engine and the Docker CLI. Docker Desktop includes the integration for Desktop users. The standalone binary is documented only as a legacy backward-compatibility option.
Why does a CI job hang on docker compose exec?
Compose V2 allocates a TTY by default. Noninteractive jobs should add -T or --no-tty, for example docker compose exec -T app sh -c 'your-command'.
How can I keep container and network names stable?
Check project-name precedence: -p, then COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME, then the top-level name, then the project directory. Set an explicit valid name in deployment commands when scripts or monitoring depend on generated resource names.
Can I keep using docker-compose.yml?
Yes. Compose supports the legacy filenames for backward compatibility, but compose.yaml or compose.yml is preferred. If both exist, Compose prefers compose.yaml; use an explicit -f path when file selection must be unambiguous.
The Bottom Line
Migrate the command and the operational assumptions together: install the supported Compose plugin, validate with docker compose config, remove obsolete settings, and make project names and TTY behavior explicit in automation.
