To change server environments, close the game completely and launch the edition built for the generation you want: the PS4 or Xbox One application for old-gen play, or Rust Console Edition (PlayStation 5) or Rust Console Edition X|S for current-generation play. Then search that application’s server browser.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
There is no documented universal in-game switch that moves you between every old- and new-generation server list. Xbox One owners were promised a free, automatic one-to-one match to the equivalent Xbox Series X|S edition, but account inventories, skins, blueprints and server progress between editions are not fully documented. Treat the browser you see as version-specific and have everyone in a group launch the same generation’s application.

Which Rust Console Edition are you running?
“Old gen” means the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. “New gen” means the dedicated PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S products. A PS5 or Xbox Series console can also run the older application through backward compatibility, so the console itself does not prove which edition is open.
The distinction matters because the dedicated current-generation builds have their own store listings, performance targets and update paths. Before trying to join a friend, identify both the hardware and the application title shown in your console library.

| Old generation | Rust Console Edition for the previous console family | PlayStation 4, Xbox One; also playable by backward compatibility on newer hardware | The July 27, 2022 support material described a performance improvement when the old application ran on newer consoles, before dedicated current-generation products were available. | Not stated by the cited official material for inventories, skins, blueprints, wipes or server progress. |
| Current generation | Rust Console Edition (PlayStation 5) | PlayStation 5 | The PlayStation product page lists smoother frame rates, 4K visuals, faster loading, monthly content updates and Public Test Branch access. | Not stated by the cited official material for transfers from the PS4 application. |
| Current generation | Rust Console Edition X|S | Xbox Series X|S | The Xbox Series X|S version launched June 26, 2025. The Xbox Store listing identifies it as optimized for Series X|S, with online multiplayer for 2–100 players, 4K Ultra HD and Xbox cloud saves. | Xbox entitlement is documented; the status of every gameplay and account item is not. |
How to switch from an old-gen app to a new-gen app
- Identify the target edition. On PlayStation, choose Rust Console Edition (PlayStation 5). On Xbox, choose Rust Console Edition X|S. If you intend to remain on the previous-generation environment, select the PS4 or Xbox One application instead.
- Install or select that product. Xbox owners of any Xbox One Rust Console Edition were told by Double Eleven that the equivalent Series X|S edition would be supplied free through an automatic one-to-one edition match. The June 25, 2025 Xbox Wire announcement gives the example that a Base Edition owner receives the Series X|S Base Edition. PlayStation users should select the PS5 product listed for their console; the available entitlement is determined by the platform account and store listing.
- Close the currently running game. Exit to the console dashboard and fully close Rust rather than leaving the old application suspended. This prevents a backward-compatible build from being mistaken for the dedicated current-generation build.
- Launch the intended application. Check the title on the launch tile or product page before entering the game. On Xbox, confirm that the tile identifies the X|S edition rather than the Xbox One build. On PlayStation, confirm that the PS5 edition is selected rather than the PS4 version running through compatibility.
- Open that edition’s server browser. Search by server name and use the available region or other filters. A list shown by one application should not be assumed to be a complete list for the other application.
- Coordinate with your group. Have friends close any old application and launch the same edition before searching. If one player remains in the old build, a server can appear to be missing even when everyone is searching correctly for the name.
- Check the connection before committing to a server. Rust Console Edition support says you may play on any server regardless of location, but recommends choosing the lowest-ping server because higher ping increases network delay and the chance of lag.
Xbox Series X|S entitlement
Double Eleven’s June 25, 2025 announcement is specific to ownership: “If you already own any version of Rust Console Edition on Xbox One, the upgrade to Xbox Series X|S is completely free. We provide an automatic one-to-one edition match.” That means the edition entitlement is intended to follow the Xbox One edition tier, such as Base Edition, rather than requiring a second purchase. It does not, by itself, document that every character, blueprint, skin or wipe state is shared between applications.
PlayStation 5 selection
The PlayStation storefront presents Rust Console Edition (PlayStation 5) as a separate current-generation product. A PS5 owner can therefore have access to both the PS5 product and the older PS4 application. Always choose the PS5 product when you want its current-generation frame-rate, visual and loading improvements; opening the PS4 application will put you back in the older software environment.

The available official material does not provide a complete cross-generation compatibility matrix. It confirms separate current-generation products and describes how the older application could run through backward compatibility, but it does not promise that every PS4 server is listed in the PS5 browser or that every PS4 player can join a server selected in the PS5 application.
Use the conservative rule that all players in a party should launch the same generation’s application. If a friend cannot find the server, first compare the exact application each person opened, then compare the spelling of the server name, region filter and ping. Do not infer cross-generation support merely because both players are using PlayStation hardware.
Why Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S may show different servers
An Xbox Series console can run the Xbox One build through backward compatibility as well as the dedicated Rust Console Edition X|S product. Those are different launch choices. The X|S product launched on June 26, 2025 and has its own optimized storefront listing, while the older build follows the previous-generation application path.
Because the official pages do not document a universal toggle or guarantee identical server listings in both applications, a different browser result is not proof that a server has closed. Close the game, verify the product title, reopen the edition your group is using and repeat the search without an overly narrow region or filter.

Xbox Series X|S
Double Eleven describes the Series X|S rebuild as smoother and faster, with quicker loading, higher frame rates, richer textures and dynamic lighting. The announcement also identifies additional content including scrap helicopters, minicopters, hot-air balloons and SAM sites. The Xbox Store lists online multiplayer for 2–100 players, 4K Ultra HD and Xbox cloud saves for the X|S product. “Up to 100 players” is the store’s stated capacity, not a guarantee that every individual server is full or that every rule set uses the same population.
PlayStation 5
The PlayStation product page lists smoother frame rates, 4K visuals, faster loading, monthly content updates and access to the Public Test Branch for Rust Console Edition (PlayStation 5). These are product-level characteristics; they do not establish that a particular server, wipe or account item is shared with the PS4 application.
Backward compatibility is not the same as a dedicated build
Before the dedicated current-generation releases, Rust Console Edition ran on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. A July 27, 2022 support article described a performance boost over previous-generation systems. That earlier improvement should not be confused with launching the dedicated PS5 or X|S product now. Check the application title whenever you are troubleshooting performance or server visibility.

Do skins, blueprints and progress transfer?
The documented sources do not give a complete transfer policy for account inventories, cosmetic skins, blueprints, wipe state, characters or server progress between old- and new-generation applications. The Xbox announcement establishes a free edition entitlement for qualifying Xbox One owners, but an entitlement match is not the same thing as a published guarantee that every gameplay record is shared.
Accordingly, do not delete an old application, abandon a base or assume a blueprint wipe will appear in the other edition until Double Eleven’s current support response confirms the behavior for your account and platform. When contacting support, identify the console family, the exact application title, your edition tier and the server name or wipe in question. This avoids treating a missing item as a server-browser problem when it may be an account-policy issue.
Server region, ping and lag
Rust Console Edition support states: “No, you are free to play the game on any server you wish, regardless of location.” The same guidance recommends the server with the lowest ping for a smoother experience and fewer chances of network lag. Region is therefore a practical performance choice, not a stated lockout on where your account may play.
- Use the nearest low-ping option when several servers meet your wipe, population and ruleset requirements.
- Do not use a region filter as your only diagnosis. Clear or broaden it if a known server is absent, then verify the application generation.
- Separate visibility from performance. Finding a server proves that the browser can display it; it does not mean a distant server will provide stable latency.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The PS5 or Series console keeps opening the old version
Return to the game library, highlight the Rust tile and inspect the product or edition label before pressing Play. Fully close the running application first. On Xbox, look specifically for the X|S product; on PlayStation, choose the PS5 listing. If only the old product appears, verify the platform account that owns the game and the edition shown in the store. The documented Xbox policy promises an automatic match for Xbox One owners, but it does not describe every store-interface state.
A friend cannot see the server
Compare the application title on both consoles, remove restrictive region filters, search the exact server name and check whether either player is still in a suspended old-generation app. If the titles match and the server remains absent, record the server name, platform, edition and approximate time before contacting Double Eleven support.
The server appears but play is laggy
Choose a server with lower ping, as the official support guidance recommends. Changing from the old application to the dedicated current-generation build may improve loading and rendering, but it cannot eliminate latency caused by distance or network conditions.
New content is missing
Confirm that you launched the dedicated current-generation product rather than the backward-compatible old application. The Series X|S announcement lists scrap helicopters, minicopters, hot-air balloons and SAM sites among its new content. Availability of a particular item can still depend on the server’s update and ruleset, so distinguish a content-version issue from a server configuration.
Before switching: a practical checklist
- Mark each player as PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Write down the exact application title each player intends to launch.
- On Xbox, confirm the free one-to-one Series entitlement is attached to the owning account.
- Close suspended copies of Rust before opening the target edition.
- Search the server from the target edition without assuming the other edition has an identical list.
- Use the lowest-ping acceptable server and verify that every player can see it.
- Keep expectations about skins, blueprints and progress conservative until Double Eleven confirms your platform-specific account behavior.
The reliable way to change generations is therefore an application switch, not a hidden server-browser toggle: close Rust, launch the correct PS5 or Xbox Series X|S product (or the old-generation product when that is your target), and search from there. Server visibility and progression should be treated as edition-specific unless the platform’s current support documentation explicitly says otherwise.
