A VPS running Docker can host self-hosted web applications, developer and CI services, complete multi-container application stacks, and several personal services on one server. Containers are especially useful when applications require conflicting runtimes or dependency versions, or when you want repeatable updates, backups, and migrations. They are usually unnecessary for one uncomplicated WordPress site and are not practical on shared hosting without root access.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The main operational warning is networking: publishing a Docker port can expose it to the internet even when your uncomplicated WordPress site and are not practical on shared hosting without root access.

What Docker on a VPS actually provides
A VPS gives you a virtual server with administrative control over its operating system, network interfaces, storage, and processes. Docker adds a container runtime and image-based packaging. Each application runs in a container with its own filesystem view, processes, libraries, and network identity, while containers share the VPS kernel.
A container is not a separate virtual machine. It does not provide a second kernel or automatic host-level redundancy. If the VPS fails, every container on that VPS is affected. Docker makes packaging and operations more consistent; it does not remove the need for backups, monitoring, patching, or a recovery plan.

Four practical categories of VPS workloads
Self-hosted applications
Docker is commonly used to run web applications that would otherwise require separate language runtimes, databases, queues, and system packages. Published deployment guides list workflow automation with n8n, analytics with Plausible, publishing with Ghost, and knowledge management with Outline as container-friendly applications. Each application can be upgraded or replaced without changing unrelated software installed on the host.
These services normally sit behind a reverse proxy that terminates HTTPS and routes requests by hostname. The application container can remain on a private Docker network, while only the reverse proxy needs a public web port. This arrangement also lets several services share ports 80 and 443 without exposing every application directly.
Developer and continuous-integration tools
A VPS can run source-control platforms such as GitLab or Gitea and CI systems such as Drone CI. Docker-based runners for GitHub Actions or GitLab can execute build jobs in disposable environments, keeping compilers, SDKs, and build dependencies out of the host operating system.
CI workloads need more planning than a small web app. Builds can consume CPU, memory, temporary disk space, and network bandwidth in bursts. Set limits where the platform supports them, retain only the artifacts you need, and prevent untrusted jobs from gaining access to the Docker socket or host filesystem.
Multi-container application stacks
Many useful services are not a single container. A typical stack has a web or API container, a PostgreSQL database, and a cache such as Redis. Docker Compose describes those services, networks, volumes, environment variables, and startup dependencies in one project file. You can then bring the stack up, inspect it, back it up, and move it as a unit.

Keeping the database on a private network is important: the application should reach PostgreSQL by its Compose service name, while the database port should not be published to the public interface unless there is a specific administrative need.

Personal service consolidation
One developer write-up describes consolidating Docker and Compose, PostgreSQL, Traefik as a reverse proxy, n8n, Vaultwarden, Uptime Kuma, and AI services on a single VPS. The appeal is straightforward: one host, one backup policy, and one set of monitoring and update routines instead of several unrelated machines.
Consolidation saves administration, but it also creates a shared failure domain. A kernel problem, exhausted disk, or mistaken firewall change can affect every service. Separate critical services when their availability or security requirements differ.
Workload patterns at a glance
| Pattern | Examples | Why Docker helps | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted app | n8n, Plausible, Ghost, Outline | Packages application dependencies and simplifies repeatable deployment | Use a reverse proxy and persistent volumes; protect application ports |
| Developer and CI | GitLab, Gitea, Drone CI, self-hosted runners | Creates disposable, consistent build environments | Build bursts need resource controls and isolation from the host |
| Compose stack | Web app plus PostgreSQL and cache | Defines related services, networks, and volumes together | Back up databases and volumes; keep internal services private |
| Personal consolidation | Reverse proxy, password manager, uptime monitor, automation, AI services | Reduces the number of servers and centralizes operations | All services share one VPS failure domain |
Why use containers instead of installing everything directly?
Isolation for conflicting dependencies
Two applications may require different versions of a language runtime, web server module, or system library. Installing both directly on one operating system can create package conflicts and make upgrades risky. Containers keep those dependency trees separate while allowing the services to share the same VPS hardware.
Isolation is relative, not absolute. Containers share the host kernel, and a process with excessive privileges can reach sensitive host resources. Run services as non-root users where supported, grant only the capabilities they need, and treat images and environment variables as production code.

Repeatable updates and migrations
An image records an application’s user-space dependencies. Compose files record how services connect. Together they make it easier to reproduce a deployment on a replacement VPS. A developer who consolidated services this way reported simpler backups, migrations, and updates; the benefit comes from having explicit configuration rather than from Docker alone.
Before changing an image tag, read its release notes, back up persistent data, and verify that the application’s database migration path is supported. A new container image does not automatically protect the data stored in a named volume.
When Docker on a VPS is the wrong choice
Shared hosting without root access
Shared hosting generally does not let you control the Docker daemon, install kernel-level components, or configure the host firewall. Because containers still depend on host-level privileges and networking, a shared plan is not a substitute for a VPS with administrative access.
One simple WordPress site
If the server runs only one uncomplicated WordPress site, direct hosting is often simpler. Docker adds image updates, Compose configuration, volume management, and another networking layer without solving a problem that the single site has. Containers become more compelling when you need several applications, reproducible environments, or conflicting dependencies.
No one to maintain images and data
Every container needs an owner. Someone must review image updates, renew certificates, rotate secrets, monitor disk usage, test restores, and respond when a dependency breaks. If nobody can perform those tasks, choosing Docker because it looks portable can increase operational risk.

Requirements beyond one host
A single VPS stops being the right deployment model when you require host-level redundancy, automatic multi-node scheduling, or independent scaling across many services. Docker can be one component of a larger orchestration platform, but Compose on one VPS does not provide failover or multi-node capacity by itself.
Checklist before deploying a container stack
- Administrative access: Confirm that you control the VPS operating system, Docker daemon, storage, and firewall.
- Persistent data: Identify every database, upload directory, certificate, and configuration file that must survive container replacement.
- Resource profile: Account for steady usage and bursts from databases, CI jobs, indexing, and AI workloads. Do not assume that a container limits resource use unless you configure limits.
- Network design: Decide which services need public access and which should communicate only on private Docker networks.
- Recovery: Define where backups are stored, how often they run, and how you will restore the stack on another VPS.
- Ownership: Assign responsibility for image updates, secrets, logs, certificates, and incident response.
The Docker port and UFW firewall trap
Docker’s firewall documentation says that the rules it creates are required for Docker bridge networks and should not be modified. By default, external source addresses are allowed to connect to ports that you publish on the Docker host’s addresses. A declaration such as ports: - "8081:8081" can therefore make the service reachable from the internet.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDocker uses iptables by default; the Engine firewall-backend option can select iptables or nftables. The commonly described mechanism behind the UFW surprise is that UFW manages the host’s INPUT chain, while Docker’s destination-NAT forwarding sends published traffic through the FORWARD path. As a result, a UFW rule that appears to deny a port may not stop a published container port. Treat that mechanism as host-dependent and verify it on your own VPS.
One documented real-world case allowed only SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS with UFW, yet a Nexus service remained reachable on port 8081 because its Compose file published the port on 0.0.0.0. The lesson is operational: a clean-looking ufw status output does not prove that Docker-published ports are closed.
Safer exposure pattern: bind internally and proxy
If a service should be reachable only through your reverse proxy, bind its host port to localhost rather than every interface:

Filter in the DOCKER-USER chain
Docker evaluates the DOCKER-USER chain before its own forwarding rules. Administrators who need host-level filtering can place restrictions there, following Docker’s documented packet-filtering model. Test changes carefully: an incorrect rule can block legitimate container traffic or lock you out of management services.
Use a cloud firewall or security group
A provider-level firewall can restrict inbound traffic before it reaches the VPS. Allow only the ports and source networks you actually need, then apply container-level controls as a second layer. This is particularly useful when you must permit administration from a fixed office or VPN range.
Test from outside the VPS
Check exposure from a different network, such as a mobile connection or an external monitoring host. Test the public IP and each published port, not just localhost and not just the firewall status command. Remove temporary test publications after confirming the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable deployment workflow
- Map the services. List public entry points, internal dependencies, persistent volumes, secrets, and expected administrators.
- Create the Compose project. Define services, private networks, health checks where supported, restart behavior, and explicit volume paths.
- Validate before starting. Run
docker compose configto catch malformed YAML and unresolved variables. - Start and inspect. Use
docker compose up -d, thendocker compose psanddocker compose logs --tail=200to verify startup. - Expose only the proxy. Bind internal services to localhost or leave them un published, and publish only the ports required by your reverse proxy or administration plan.
- Back up data. Dump databases in an application-consistent way and copy volume data and Compose configuration to storage outside the VPS.
- Document recovery. Record image versions, environment variables, DNS names, firewall rules, and restore steps while the deployment is working.
Operating and updating containers safely
Updates
Pulling a new image is not the same as applying a safe upgrade. Review the release notes, confirm a backup, pull the image, recreate the affected service, and inspect logs and health checks. Keep a known-good image reference so you can roll back if the application or its database migration fails.
Backups
Back up the data that matters, not just the container definition. A Compose file can recreate an empty PostgreSQL container, but it cannot recreate its records. Store at least one copy outside the VPS and periodically perform a test restore on an isolated project or replacement host.
Monitoring and capacity
Monitor disk space, memory pressure, load, container restarts, certificate expiry, and backup success. Uptime checks should test the public URL and, where possible, an authenticated health endpoint. A service that is running but cannot reach its database is not healthy.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The site is down but containers show “Up”
- Inspect application and reverse-proxy logs for failed database connections or certificate errors.
- Check that the proxy points to the current Compose service name and internal port.
- Verify the VPS is not out of disk space or memory.
- Confirm DNS resolves to the current public IP and that the cloud firewall permits the intended web ports.
A supposedly blocked port is reachable
- Inspect the Compose file for a
portsentry bound to0.0.0.0or an omitted host address. - Remove the publication or bind it to
127.0.0.1. - Apply an appropriate rule in
DOCKER-USERor the provider firewall. - Retest from an external network.
A container cannot reach another service
- Confirm both services join the same Docker network.
- Use the Compose service name and container port, not the host’s published port.
- Check credentials and startup ordering; a database container can be running before it is ready to accept connections.
Choosing the right deployment model
| Your situation | Most sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One basic website and no conflicting dependencies | Direct installation or managed hosting | Fewer moving parts and less maintenance |
| Several unrelated apps on one server | Docker Compose on a VPS | Separates dependencies and centralizes updates |
| App, database, and cache that must move together | A Compose stack with private networks and volumes | Defines the application as one reproducible unit |
| Untrusted CI jobs or heavy burst workloads | Dedicated runners or isolated hosts, possibly with Docker | Reduces resource contention and limits blast radius |
| Automatic failover and multi-node scaling | A multi-node orchestration design | One VPS cannot provide host redundancy or independent scaling |
Bottom line
Use Docker on a VPS when you need several services, reproducible application stacks, conflicting dependencies, or a manageable way to consolidate personal and developer tools. Keep stateful data backed up, make internal services private, and treat published ports as internet-facing until proven otherwise. Docker’s own networking rules should remain intact; control exposure with localhost bindings, the DOCKER-USER chain, and a provider firewall, then verify the result from outside the server.
