To install a Mindustry server plugin, obtain a Java .jar built for your server’s Mindustry version, copy it into the server’s config/mods/ folder, and restart the server. Confirm the load in the startup console or with the mods command. Plugins are server-side Java mods, so ordinary clients do not install the plugin in order to join.

What a Mindustry server plugin does
A server plugin is a Java mod loaded by a dedicated Mindustry server. It runs on the server process and can add server commands, administration tools, rules, or whole game modes. The plugin’s behavior is determined by its own documentation; Mindustry does not provide one universal settings file or one standard set of commands for every plugin.

Installing a plugin on the server does not automatically require every player to install a matching client mod. A plugin that adds server rules or commands can therefore be used for a public server without distributing a client package.
Check compatibility before downloading
Match the Mindustry version
Choose a plugin release built for the same Mindustry release as the dedicated server. Plugin compatibility is version-specific; a JAR made for another release may fail during startup even if the filename looks correct. There is no single compatibility matrix covering every community plugin, so read the plugin author’s release notes or README and compare the stated game version with the version printed by your server.

Confirm that it is a server plugin
Mindustry mods can target different environments. The installation described here applies to a server plugin supplied as a Java .jar. A client-only mod, map, texture pack, or source-code archive is not a substitute for that JAR. Download the built release asset rather than a repository ZIP unless the project explicitly says the ZIP contains the compiled plugin.
Inspect the plugin metadata when necessary
A loadable plugin includes metadata in plugin.json or plugin.hjson. Its entry class extends mindustry.mod.Plugin. These files are inside the JAR and are useful when diagnosing a download that is actually a different kind of mod or an incomplete build. Server administrators do not normally edit the metadata; it is supplied by the plugin author.

Where Mindustry plugins go
The standard server location is:
config/mods/
The path is relative to the dedicated server’s root directory—the directory from which the server is launched or where its host stores the server files. Do not place the JAR in a desktop game client’s mod directory, an arbitrary mods folder beside the executable, or a nested folder such as config/mods/plugin-name/plugin.jar unless the host’s documentation specifically changes the layout.

If config or config/mods does not yet exist, start the dedicated server once and stop it cleanly. The normal server data directories should then be present. On a managed host, open the file manager for that particular Mindustry instance; the provider may expose the same path through a “Mods” installer instead of showing the filesystem directly.
Manual installation: step by step
- Record the server version. Check the startup banner or the server’s version command, then select a plugin release that explicitly supports that version.
- Stop the server. Use the server’s normal shutdown command or the host control panel. Copying files while the process is running can leave the server with an old plugin list until the next restart.
- Back up the server data. At minimum, preserve the current
configdirectory and any world or map data that the plugin might change. - Obtain the compiled JAR. The file should end in
.jar. Do not rename a ZIP or upload a source archive and expect Mindustry to compile it. - Open the server root and enter
config/mods/. If the directories are missing, create them with exactly those names, or let the server create them on its first run. - Copy the JAR into that folder. Keep the file at the folder’s top level. Remove duplicate copies of older releases so the server does not attempt to load two versions of the same plugin.
- Start the server again. Plugin discovery occurs during startup; uploading the JAR does not activate it in an already-running process.
- Read the startup output. Look for a plugin-load message or an error associated with the JAR. Save the complete log if troubleshooting is needed.
- List installed plugins. From the server console, run
mods. Community administration guidance commonly uses this command to display the plugins the server recognized. - Apply the plugin’s setup instructions. Use the commands, permissions, and settings documented by that plugin rather than assuming that another plugin’s syntax or files apply.
How plugin configuration works
There is no universal Mindustry plugin config.json
A fixed, global config.json path is not established for server plugins. Each plugin decides how it stores settings. After the first successful startup, a plugin typically creates its own subfolder or JSON file somewhere under config/ or config/mods/. The exact filename and location come from that plugin’s README or from a message in the startup log.
Configure only after the first load
If you copy a JAR and immediately search for a settings file, you may find nothing because the plugin has not initialized yet. Start the server once, allow it to finish loading, stop it, and then inspect the newly changed files. Edit the generated file with a plain-text editor, preserve valid JSON or HJSON syntax, and restart if the plugin’s documentation says changes are read only at startup.

What plugin developers can expose
The official Mindustry plugin API allows a developer to define settings as strings, booleans, or numbers. Creating a new configuration value adds it to the server’s configuration list. This explains why two plugins can present completely different settings and why copying a setting name from one plugin into another does nothing. The administrator-facing names, defaults, and file format remain plugin-specific.
Using a plugin after it loads
Find its commands
Many plugins add server or in-game commands. Read the project documentation for the exact command names, arguments, and permission requirements. Test administrative commands from the server console first; then test player-facing commands with a non-owner account if the plugin is intended for ordinary players.
Enable a game mode or rule set
Plugins can add game modes as well as commands. A mode may require a map change, a server restart, a command, or a generated setting before players can use it. Follow the plugin’s documented activation order and check the console for confirmation. Do not infer that a mode is active merely because the JAR appears in the mods listing.

Give players only the permissions they need
Where a plugin supports permissions, begin with the least privilege required for the task. Keep destructive commands restricted to trusted administrators and test permission changes in a private server before applying them to a public one. Permission syntax is not standardized across all plugins, so use the plugin’s own names and examples.

Regardless of the installation method, the result must be a compatible plugin JAR recognized during server startup. A panel’s “installed” status is not proof that the plugin initialized successfully; check the console or run mods.
Why a plugin is not loading

Updating, disabling, and removing a plugin safely
Update
- Read the new release notes and verify support for your exact Mindustry version.
- Stop the server and back up
config/, worlds, and the current plugin JAR. - Remove the old JAR before copying the new one unless the plugin author explicitly documents an in-place upgrade.
- Start the server, watch for errors, run
mods, and test the plugin’s principal command or game mode.
Keep the old JAR and configuration backup until the new release has been tested. A plugin update can change setting names or defaults even when the game server itself has not changed.

Disable temporarily
Stop the server and move the plugin JAR out of config/mods/ to a backup directory. This preserves the file while preventing Mindustry from loading it on the next startup. Do not leave two copies—one active and one renamed with a second .jar extension—in the mods folder.
Remove permanently
Back up the plugin’s generated configuration first, then stop the server and delete its JAR. Whether you should also delete the generated settings folder depends on the plugin; retaining it makes later reinstallation easier, while deleting it gives a clean reset.
Operational checklist
- The server is a dedicated Mindustry instance, not the local client.
- The plugin is a compiled
.jarfor the server’s exact Mindustry release. - The JAR is directly inside
config/mods/. - Only one copy of each plugin version is present.
- The server was restarted after the file was copied or changed.
- The startup console shows successful loading, and
modslists the plugin. - Configuration was read from the plugin’s generated file or folder, not from an assumed global
config.json. - Commands, game modes, and permissions were tested with the plugin’s own documentation.
- A backup exists before upgrades, configuration migrations, or removal.
Example: evaluating a community plugin project
Essentials by Kieaer is an example of a community Mindustry plugin project. Treat it as a project to evaluate, not as a template for every plugin’s file layout or settings. Before installing any community project, check its release asset, supported Mindustry version, required dependencies, configuration instructions, and documented commands. The same checks apply whether the plugin is an administration utility, a custom game mode, or a command bundle.
What success looks like
A successful installation has three separate confirmations: the compatible JAR is in config/mods/, the startup log shows that Mindustry accepted it, and the plugin’s documented command, setting, or game mode works in a controlled test. If any one of those checks fails, treat the plugin as not ready rather than assuming that a file upload alone activated it.
