Docker Engine has no official fixed CPU or RAM minimum for a VPS. The host requirements are set by the containers you run, plus the operating system, Docker’s storage, logs and safety margin. A tiny service may run on 1 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM; a multi-service stack such as Immich needs considerably more. Start with the heaviest application’s documented minimum, add host overhead and headroom, then enforce per-container limits so one workload cannot exhaust the VPS.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The figures below separate Docker Engine requirements from application requirements. They also distinguish a VPS running Docker Engine from Docker Desktop, whose desktop-oriented requirements should not be used to size a server.

Docker’s official Engine installation pages specify supported operating systems and installation prerequisites, but do not publish a universal numeric minimum for CPU cores or RAM on a VPS. That means there is no authoritative rule such as “Docker always needs 2 GB” that applies to every deployment.
For binary installations, Docker’s documented kernel prerequisite is Linux kernel 3.10 or newer. The current installation documentation lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 25.10 and 26.04 LTS; Debian 12 and 13; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, 9 and 10; and Fedora 43–45 among supported releases. Check the installation page for your exact distribution and architecture before ordering a server, because support is tied to the host OS as well as to Docker.

A third-party ServerMania guide gives 512 MB RAM as an absolute minimum and 2 GB as a recommendation. Its publication date is not stated, so treat those numbers as a rough baseline rather than an Engine specification. They describe a very small Docker host, not a comfortable size for several applications.
How to translate an application into VPS capacity
Container images do not have one meaningful resource requirement. A web server, database, media indexer and machine-learning worker can all be packaged with Docker, yet their CPU bursts, resident memory and disk growth are completely different. Size the VPS for the peak combined workload, not for the Docker daemon in isolation.
Recommended Free Tools
- List every service. Include databases, caches, queues, reverse proxies, background workers and monitoring agents, not just the front-end container.
- Find each project’s documented minimum and recommendation. Use the stricter value when a service has separate minimum and recommended tiers.
- Add host capacity. Reserve memory for the operating system, Docker daemon, filesystem cache and short-lived spikes. A practical planning margin is 20–30% above the sum of the stated application requirements; this is a sizing rule of thumb, not an official Docker requirement.
- Check disk separately. Images, writable layers, databases, uploaded files, backups and JSON logs can fill a VPS even when CPU and RAM are adequate.
- Apply limits and observe real use. Set memory and CPU ceilings, then adjust after examining peak usage with
docker statsand host tools.
Published workload requirements
The following documented figures show why a single “Docker minimum” is misleading. Each number belongs to the named application or product, not to Docker Engine.
| Workload | CPU | RAM | Storage | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Very small Docker host (ServerMania guide) | Depends on applications | 512 MB absolute minimum; 2 GB recommended | Not stated | Third-party guidance; publication date not stated |
| Immich | 2 cores minimum; 4 recommended | 6 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended | Not stated in the cited requirement | Project documentation; year not stated |
| Virtru standard on-premise host | 2 CPU | 4 GB | 40 GB hard drive | Product support requirement; year not stated |
| Virtru gateway | Not stated | 8 GB | Not stated | Product support requirement; year not stated |
| Regula worker | At least 1 CPU per worker | 3 GB per worker | Not stated | Product support requirement; year not stated |
| Docker Desktop on Linux | Not stated | At least 4 GB | Not stated | Desktop documentation; not a VPS target |
These values span roughly 2 GB for a lightly used host to 6–8 GB for a heavier media application. They also show that CPU and memory scale differently: Regula specifies memory per worker, while Immich gives a whole-installation recommendation. Do not multiply or combine figures unless the vendor explicitly says they are per instance.
Choosing CPU capacity
One lightweight service
A single low-traffic reverse proxy, static site or small API can often start at 1 vCPU. The 1-vCPU, 1–2 GB RAM suggestion is a practical inference for light workloads, not a Docker guarantee. Leave room for occasional build steps, package updates and backups; those can briefly use more CPU than normal request handling.

Several always-on services
Two vCPUs are a sensible starting point when a stack includes a database plus application and proxy containers. Immich’s published minimum is 2 CPU cores and its recommendation is 4, while Virtru’s standard host calls for 2 CPU. Those figures are useful anchors for multi-service planning, but an idle stack and a video-processing stack will not behave alike.

CPU demand rises with concurrent workers, image processing, compilation, compression and encryption. If a product defines capacity per worker, multiply its requirement by the number of workers you intend to run. Regula, for example, requires at least 1 CPU per worker. Avoid assuming that adding RAM compensates for too few cores: memory prevents out-of-memory failures, while cores determine how much work can run simultaneously.
Choosing RAM capacity
RAM is usually the first VPS constraint for container stacks. A container can be quiet most of the time yet allocate a large cache, database buffer or temporary working set during a request. Plan for the peak of all containers plus the host, not the average shown after a short idle test.
Useful starting points
- 1–2 GB: only for a genuinely light, single-service deployment with modest traffic and no memory-heavy database or media processing.
- 4 GB: a practical entry point for a small multi-service stack. Virtru’s standard host requirement is 4 GB, but that does not make 4 GB sufficient for every product.
- 6–8 GB: the range indicated by Immich’s 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommendation. Choose the upper end when indexing, transcoding or several supporting services run together.
- Per-worker sizing: Regula specifies 3 GB RAM per worker, so two workers require 6 GB for workers alone before host overhead.
Do not treat Docker Desktop’s 4 GB minimum as a VPS requirement. Desktop runs a managed virtualized environment and has different overhead and use cases; a Linux VPS running Docker Engine is sized according to its actual services.
Disk, operating system and kernel requirements
CPU and RAM receive most attention, but disk shortages are a common cause of outages. Reserve space for the base operating system, Docker images, image layers, container logs, named volumes, databases, uploads and at least one recovery path. Virtru’s standard host requirement includes a 40 GB hard drive, which is a concrete baseline for that product, not a universal Docker minimum.

Use a filesystem with enough free space for image pulls and updates. Check usage with:
df -h
sudo du -sh /var/lib/docker
Keep persistent application data in planned volumes rather than relying on a disposable container layer. Configure log rotation so a chatty service cannot consume the entire boot disk. Backups need additional capacity or a separate destination; a VPS that has just enough room for live data has no safe rollback space.
Install a supported distribution and kernel. The documented binary-install kernel floor is 3.10, while the listed current distributions are Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 25.10 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 12 and 13, RHEL 8, 9 and 10, and Fedora 43–45. Provider images may lag behind those releases, so verify the actual image version rather than relying on the provider’s “Linux” label.
Preventing one container from taking down the VPS
Without explicit resource controls, a container can compete for the host’s available CPU and memory. Limits turn an accidental spike into a contained failure instead of a host-wide outage.

docker run -d --name app --memory=1g --cpus=1 example/app:latest
Docker’s official resource documentation lists a minimum container memory limit of 6 MB for the --memory option. That is an option-level floor, not a recommendation for a useful application. Set the limit above the application’s normal working set and test its failure behavior when the cap is reached.
Limits in Compose deployments
For a Compose-managed stack, define limits under the service’s deploy resources section:

Confirm how your installed Compose version applies deploy.resources, especially outside Swarm, and validate the file before deployment. A syntactically valid file is not proof that the limit is active; inspect the running container and watch its behavior.
Measure before changing tiers
- Run
docker statsduring normal traffic and the heaviest scheduled job. - Use
free -hto distinguish used memory from reclaimable filesystem cache. - Inspect CPU saturation with your provider’s metrics or standard Linux tools.
- Check
docker system dfanddf -hfor image, volume and log growth.
If a container repeatedly reaches its memory limit, first determine whether the application is leaking memory or simply undersized. If the host runs out of memory, the kernel may terminate processes, including containers, before your application can report a clean error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Swap: useful buffer, not extra RAM
Swap can absorb a short-lived memory spike and reduce the chance of an immediate out-of-memory kill, but it is far slower than RAM. It cannot make a 2 GB VPS perform like an 8 GB VPS, and heavy swapping can make databases and media jobs unusable. Treat swap as an emergency cushion while keeping container limits and a realistic RAM allocation.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Recommended VPS starting tiers
| Use case | Starting point | Why | When to move up |
|---|---|---|---|
| One light service | 1 vCPU, 1–2 GB RAM | Practical inference for low-concurrency workloads | Memory pressure, swap activity or sustained CPU saturation |
| Small application stack | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM | Aligns with Virtru’s 2 CPU/4 GB host figure and leaves room for several modest services | Database growth, background jobs or multiple workers |
| Immich-like media stack | 2 vCPU, 6 GB RAM minimum; 4 vCPU, 8 GB preferred | Matches Immich’s published minimum and recommendation | Indexing, transcoding or concurrent users exceed the recommended tier |
| Regula workers | At least 1 CPU and 3 GB RAM per worker, plus host overhead | Requirement is stated per worker | More workers or sustained queue backlog |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Provider CPU performance varies, and “2 vCPU” does not identify the underlying processor or its sustained performance. Monitor the deployed workload and resize based on measured peaks.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Using Docker Desktop numbers for a server
Docker Desktop’s 4 GB RAM minimum applies to a desktop product. A VPS running Docker Engine does not inherit that requirement. Use the applications’ Linux host guidance instead.
Budgeting only for the application image
The image is not the whole process. Add the database, cache, proxy, logging, filesystem cache, operating system and update space. If a requirement is “3 GB per worker,” reserve that amount for each worker before adding host overhead.
Ignoring disk growth
Images and logs accumulate even when traffic is low. Set log rotation, prune unused images deliberately, monitor volumes and keep backups outside the minimum live-data allocation.
Leaving every container unlimited
One runaway worker can starve unrelated services. Apply --memory and --cpus limits, then verify them under load. Limits should reflect tested application needs, not arbitrary tiny values.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Buying the smallest tier and relying on swap
Swap may prevent a crash during a brief spike but usually harms latency under sustained pressure. Upgrade RAM when the host regularly swaps or containers hit their memory ceilings.
A concise decision process
- Confirm the VPS runs a supported Linux release and a kernel meeting the documented prerequisite.
- Write down every container and its vendor-stated CPU, RAM and disk requirement.
- Multiply per-worker figures by planned concurrency.
- Select RAM first, adding host overhead and a 20–30% planning margin.
- Select vCPUs for the busiest parallel workload; use 2 as a common multi-service starting point, not as a universal minimum.
- Allocate disk for images, volumes, logs, updates and backups.
- Set resource limits, deploy, and observe peak usage before committing to a larger or smaller tier.
The Bottom Line
Docker Engine itself is lightweight and has no official fixed VPS CPU or RAM minimum. Choose capacity from the containers: roughly 1 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM for a light single service, about 2 vCPUs and 4 GB for a modest stack, and 6–8 GB RAM with 2–4 cores for workloads such as Immich. Add disk and host headroom, enforce limits, and resize from measured peaks.
