What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The fastest Nginx configuration is the one you can measure, change safely, and verify under your own workload. Start by logging request time, status, bytes sent, connection reuse, and upstream timing. Then tune one layer at a time: worker capacity and file limits, static-file delivery, keep-alive, TLS, compression, HTTP/2, caching, and upstream behavior. There is no universal “high-performance” snippet; CPU count, storage, kernel, OpenSSL build, traffic pattern, and application behavior determine the right values.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
1. Establish a baseline before changing Nginx
Optimization without a baseline turns every change into a guess. Record the same measurements before and after each change, using representative traffic rather than a single browser request or a synthetic request that does not resemble production.

Nginx exposes variables that make a useful access-log baseline: request_time for total request processing time, status for the response code, bytes_sent for transfer size, connection for the connection identifier, and connection_requests for how many requests have used that connection. Include upstream timing variables when Nginx proxies to an application server. Together, these fields show whether a change reduced application wait, transfer work, connection churn, or only the apparent average.

Keep CPU use, memory use, upstream latency, cache-hit ratio, TLS handshake rate, and error counts alongside the request log. Compare median and tail latency, not just an average: a setting that improves the median while increasing slow requests is usually a regression.

Change one layer at a time
- Capture a baseline during a representative traffic window.
- Choose one directive group, such as workers, TLS, or gzip.
- Validate the configuration, reload safely, and run the same traffic test.
- Check status codes, tail latency, CPU, memory, bytes transferred, and upstream load.
- Keep the change only if it improves the metric that matters without damaging correctness or reliability.
Keep a known-good configuration so that a failed experiment can be reverted immediately. Repeat this process after Nginx, OpenSSL, kernel, or application upgrades because defaults and directive availability can change.
2. Size workers, connections, and file limits together
Understand the process model
Nginx has a master process and worker processes; the workers perform request processing. Set worker_processes auto; as a sensible starting point on a multi-core host, allowing Nginx to choose a worker count based on available CPUs. A fixed count can be appropriate when the host is deliberately CPU-partitioned, but it should reflect the CPUs actually available to Nginx rather than the machine’s nominal specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet a connection ceiling that the operating system can honor
worker_connections limits the number of simultaneous connections handled by each worker. It is not a promise that the server can sustain that many active clients: the total is also bounded by the process open-file limit, and proxied requests may consume file descriptors for both client and upstream connections. The official Nginx example uses worker_connections 2000;, sendfile on;, and tcp_nopush on;; treat those as an example configuration, not universal best values.
If the workload needs more descriptors, worker_rlimit_nofile can raise the worker limit, subject to the operating system’s permitted limit. Check the effective limit for the running service and size it with both client and upstream sockets, static files, logs, and other descriptors in mind. Raising worker_connections without raising the file limit merely creates an unreachable ceiling.
worker_processes auto;
worker_rlimit_nofile 65535;
events {
worker_connections 2000;
}
The number 65535 above is an example of a file-limit target, not a recommendation for every host. Use the limit your operating system and service manager allow, then confirm it under load.
Watch for the real bottleneck
- High CPU with idle upstreams can indicate TLS, compression, or application-level work on the Nginx host.
- File-descriptor exhaustion points to the connection/file-limit relationship, leaked connections, or an unexpectedly large upstream fan-out.
- Low CPU with increasing request time often means storage latency, network delay, upstream queueing, or a connection backlog rather than insufficient workers.
3. Improve static-file delivery and connection reuse
Evaluate sendfile and tcp_nopush with your storage path
sendfile on; can let the kernel transfer a file without copying its contents through user space. tcp_nopush on; can help packetize headers and file data efficiently when sendfile is used. Their effect depends on the operating-system kernel, filesystem, storage device, and response pattern, so benchmark them with the files and network path your users actually receive.
Test both throughput and tail latency. A setting that helps large sequential files may not help tiny files, a network filesystem, or a workload dominated by dynamic responses. Verify that range requests, caching headers, and error handling still behave correctly.

Use keep-alive to avoid repeated setup
HTTP keep-alive allows a client to reuse an established connection for multiple requests, avoiding repeated TCP and TLS setup. Keep-alive is especially valuable for pages that request many assets. Nginx’s HTTPS guidance recommends keep-alive and SSL session reuse to reduce handshake operations. Balance the benefit against idle-connection memory and file-descriptor consumption; a very long idle lifetime can reserve capacity for clients that are no longer active.
Measure connection_requests in access logs. A low request count per connection suggests connection churn; a higher count indicates effective reuse, provided idle connections are not consuming capacity disproportionately.
4. Reduce HTTPS overhead without weakening security
Use TLS versions supported by the installed stack
Enable current supported TLS versions for the specific Nginx and OpenSSL combination installed on the server. The Nginx examples use TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3. Do not copy a protocol directive from a different Nginx release or OpenSSL build without checking that the syntax and supported versions match. Removing obsolete protocols can reduce negotiation choices and avoid legacy security problems, but compatibility requirements for your clients still matter.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShare the SSL session cache across workers
TLS operations consume extra CPU resources. A shared SSL session cache lets workers reuse session parameters instead of repeating full handshakes. Nginx documents that a 1 MB shared cache stores approximately 4,000 sessions. The shared cache is preferable to a worker-local built-in cache because all workers can use the same session store.
ssl_session_cache shared:SSL:1m;
ssl_session_timeout 10m;
The one-megabyte example corresponds to the documented approximate capacity; choose the size and timeout from observed handshake volume, client behavior, and memory budget. Confirm session reuse with your TLS inspection tools and monitor handshake rate before and after the change.
Measure handshake work separately from request work
A page can have a low application response time but still feel slow when every asset opens a new TLS connection. Compare new-connection counts, session resumption, connection reuse, and request latency. Keep-alive and session caching address different parts of the problem: one reuses the connection, while the other reduces the work needed when a new TLS connection is unavoidable.
5. Use gzip selectively and account for its CPU cost
Choose MIME types and a minimum size
The gzip module provides gzip_types, gzip_min_length, gzip_proxied, gzip_vary, and compression levels from 1 through 9. Compress text-based responses that benefit from size reduction, and set a minimum size so tiny responses do not incur compression overhead larger than the transfer savings. Do not compress formats that are already compressed, such as common image, audio, video, or archive formats.

The MIME list and 1,000-byte threshold are examples to test, not universal values. Confirm that the upstream sends the content type you expect and that caches vary on the Accept-Encoding header when both compressed and uncompressed responses can be served.
Pick a level by measuring CPU and latency together
Higher compression levels can reduce bytes but require more CPU. A lower level may deliver a better user-perceived result when the server is CPU-bound or when the network is fast. Compare compression ratio, CPU time, request latency, and origin capacity under realistic response sizes. Nginx documentation warns that compression overhead can negatively affect performance, so “more compression” is not automatically faster.
Consider the HTTPS side effect
When compressing HTTPS responses, account for the BREACH risk documented for the gzip module. Responses that reflect secrets or user-controlled input require a security review before compression is enabled. Avoid treating gzip as a blanket switch for every response; select content deliberately and verify that sensitive dynamic pages follow your security policy.
6. Enable HTTP/2 only after verifying compatibility
HTTP/2 can multiplex streams over one connection, reducing the need for parallel TCP connections, but support depends on the Nginx HTTP/2 module and, for TLS connections, ALPN support in OpenSSL. Check the installed Nginx version, build modules, and TLS library before changing the listener configuration.
Test with representative clients and traffic. Measure connection counts, header sizes, concurrent streams, first-byte time, total page time, and upstream behavior. HTTP/2 does not guarantee a lower value for every latency metric: stream contention, large headers, client implementation, backend serialization, or an overloaded connection can offset multiplexing benefits.
After enabling it, verify that clients negotiate HTTP/2 rather than silently falling back, that redirects and certificates remain valid, and that logs and monitoring still distinguish protocol behavior. Keep an HTTP/1.1 comparison path during testing so any change in tail latency or error rate is visible.
7. Add proxy caching when correctness permits
Build a deliberate proxy cache
For cacheable reverse-proxy responses, define a cache path and shared cache zone, enable the cache, and choose a key that represents the response’s true variation. Then set freshness, revalidation, stale-serving, and lock behavior according to the application’s requirements.

This is a structure example, not a drop-in policy. The path, zone size, inactivity period, key, and ten-minute validity must match storage capacity, response variation, and freshness requirements. Include relevant query parameters, cookies, authorization state, and content negotiation in the key when they change the representation; exclude them only when you have proved they do not.

Prevent personalized responses from leaking
Authenticated or personalized responses generally need bypass and no-cache rules. Define explicit conditions for authorization headers, session cookies, private cache-control directives, and methods that change state. A cache hit that serves the wrong user’s data is a correctness and security failure, not a performance win.
Use stale responses and locking intentionally
Serving stale content during an upstream failure can protect availability, while proxy_cache_lock can prevent many concurrent misses from hammering the origin. Both decisions involve product trade-offs: stale data may violate freshness expectations, and locking can make waiting clients share one origin fill rather than each generating a request. Monitor hit ratio, stale responses, origin request rate, and tail latency after enabling them.
8. Tune FastCGI caching for PHP and similar applications
FastCGI caching uses the same concepts as proxy caching but with FastCGI-specific directives: fastcgi_cache_path, fastcgi_cache, fastcgi_cache_key, fastcgi_cache_valid, fastcgi_cache_lock, and fastcgi_cache_use_stale. Define the cache zone, select a key that matches host, URI, query-string, and relevant request state, and set validity from the application’s publishing and invalidation model.
fastcgi_cache_path /var/cache/nginx/fastcgi levels=1:2 keys_zone=fcgi_cache:10m inactive=30m;
fastcgi_cache fcgi_cache;
fastcgi_cache_key "$scheme$request_method$host$request_uri";
fastcgi_cache_valid 200 5m;
fastcgi_cache_lock on;
Exclude logged-in users, session-bearing requests, administrative paths, and responses that set private cookies unless the application explicitly supports caching them. Invalidate or revalidate entries when content changes. Measure backend request rate and cache correctness, not only hit ratio: a high hit ratio with stale or mis-personalized output is a failed configuration.

9. Keep upstream connections and buffering aligned with the application
Nginx can reverse-proxy and load-balance requests across application servers. Distribute traffic only after measuring upstream saturation and queueing; adding more backend destinations does not fix an application that is blocked on its database, external API, or worker pool.
Reuse upstream connections where supported and align buffering with response size and latency. Buffering can protect clients from slow upstream production and free the upstream connection sooner, but large buffers consume memory. Small or streaming responses may need different behavior from large downloads. Compare upstream response time with total request time to distinguish backend delay from client transfer delay.

- High upstream response time with low Nginx CPU indicates backend saturation or queueing.
- Low upstream time with high total request time points toward TLS, compression, client bandwidth, or buffering.
- Increasing retries or 5xx responses require health and capacity investigation before any tuning snippet is copied.
10. A safe optimization workflow
- Inventory the stack. Record Nginx and OpenSSL versions, enabled modules, CPU and memory limits, kernel, filesystem, storage type, TLS configuration, and application servers.
- Define success metrics. Choose throughput, median and tail latency, CPU cost, memory use, handshake rate, cache-hit ratio, backend request rate, and personalized-response correctness as appropriate for the service.
- Capture a baseline. Log request time, status, bytes, connection reuse, and upstream timing, then collect host and application metrics during representative traffic.
- Change one directive group. Start with the bottleneck shown by the baseline instead of enabling every optimization at once.
- Validate before reload. Run Nginx’s configuration test command, inspect the reported file and line number, and correct errors before applying the reload.
- Run a representative test. Include cache misses and hits, static and dynamic requests, new and reused connections, realistic payload sizes, and clients using the protocols you support.
- Check correctness. Verify status codes, headers, compression negotiation, TLS negotiation, HTTP/2 behavior, authentication, personalization, cache invalidation, and stale-response policy.
- Compare tails and resource use. Keep a change only when it improves the target metric without unacceptable CPU, memory, error, or backend-load consequences.
- Record and roll back when needed. Keep the previous configuration and the measurements that justified the change. Revert immediately when errors, data exposure, or tail latency worsen.
11. Troubleshooting common performance regressions
Connections fail under load
Check the effective open-file limit, worker count, worker_connections, upstream socket count, and kernel limits. A configured connection number can exceed what the process is allowed to open. Look for “too many open files” errors and confirm whether each request consumes one client descriptor, an upstream descriptor, or both.
CPU rises after enabling gzip
Inspect compressed MIME types, response sizes, and compression level. Remove already-compressed formats, raise the minimum size for tiny responses, or lower the level if bandwidth savings do not offset CPU cost. Re-test tail latency and upstream capacity rather than judging only the byte reduction.
TLS remains slow after session caching
Verify that clients actually resume sessions, that the shared cache is available to all workers, and that keep-alive is functioning. A high rate of genuinely new connections, incompatible clients, short idle lifetimes, or certificate and protocol negotiation issues can keep handshake work high.
Cache hits serve incorrect content
Inspect the cache key and bypass/no-cache rules. Check query parameters, cookies, authorization headers, hostnames, content negotiation, and state-changing methods. Purge or expire affected entries, correct the variation rules, and test anonymous, authenticated, and personalized requests separately before re-enabling the cache.
HTTP/2 shows no improvement
Confirm module and ALPN support and verify the negotiated protocol. Then compare stream concurrency, header sizes, connection reuse, backend queueing, and client behavior. If one connection is congested or the upstream remains the bottleneck, multiplexing alone will not reduce response time.
12. What to revisit after upgrades
Re-run the baseline after upgrading Nginx, OpenSSL, the kernel, the operating system, or the application. Directive syntax, protocol support, defaults, TLS behavior, and performance characteristics can change. Treat every upgrade as a reason to verify configuration tests, TLS negotiation, compression behavior, cache correctness, error rates, and tail latency rather than assuming the old tuning remains optimal.
