Choose Doctrine if you want a Support hero who constantly switches between helping allies and pressuring enemies, then amplifies a key ability at the right moment. His kit combines a mid-to-long-range weapon that heals or damages, an ability that empowers the next cast, ally attack-speed support, a defensive rush, and an ultimate that changes both teams’ health totals. That makes him a strong fit for players who enjoy making several consequential decisions during one fight.
There is no evidence here for an objectively best choice among Doctrine, Moira, and Anran. PC Gamer’s available comparison is specifically about movement, not identical roles, balance, counters, win rates, or rank-by-rank strength. Use the playstyle tests below: if Doctrine’s lifeforce manipulation and timing demands appeal to you, start with him; if movement is the feature you care about most, use the in-game comparison to decide which hero’s mobility feels natural.

What Doctrine is designed to do
Blizzard classifies Doctrine as a Support hero. His concept is a “cyberneticist turned supervillain” who uses life-draining drones to “decree destiny.” In the Season 5 announcement, Blizzard describes the design as an Overwatch vampire fantasy built around manipulating lifeforce on both sides of a fight.
That description matters for picking him. Doctrine is not presented as a support who only restores health from a safe distance, nor as a damage hero with a token heal. His documented abilities ask you to read the fight in both directions: identify an ally who needs help, identify an enemy who can be pressured, decide when to empower your next ability, and choose whether mobility is needed for escape, repositioning, or an aggressive angle.

Season 5, “A Grim Doctrine,” was announced to begin on October 6, 2026, with Doctrine as its new Support hero. That is release context rather than a permanent statement about the current season; later updates can change numbers, interactions, or even how the kit feels. Blizzard’s hero profile is the right place to check for later revisions.
Doctrine’s abilities, and the decisions each one creates
Eternal Scepter: one weapon for healing and damage
Eternal Scepter is a mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies. Blizzard’s season announcement describes its reach as mid-to-long range, while the hero profile calls it mid-range; either way, the important choice is target selection rather than carrying separate healing and damage weapons.
The infused shot becomes a larger piercing blast. That gives Infuse a direct relationship with your primary fire: you can prepare a more significant healing or damage event instead of treating the empowerment as an unrelated button press. The available descriptions do not specify damage, healing amounts, ammunition, falloff, cooldowns, or piercing rules beyond the statement that the infused shot is larger and piercing. Do not infer a guaranteed number of targets or a guaranteed kill from the word “piercing.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Choose Eternal Scepter for an ally when stabilizing that teammate is more valuable than adding pressure.
- Choose it for an enemy when your team has enough immediate healing and a safe damage window is available.
- Respect the range qualification: the weapon is described as mid-to-long range, not as unlimited-range support.
If you enjoy supports whose attention alternates between friendly and hostile targets, Eternal Scepter is the clearest reason to try Doctrine. If you prefer a highly specialized healing pattern with fewer target-switching decisions, his weapon may feel demanding.
Infuse: make the next ability count
Infuse adds a powerful effect to the next ability. It is the kit’s timing engine: instead of spending an enhancement passively, you decide which upcoming action deserves the stronger version.
Because Infuse modifies the next ability, the useful question is not simply “Is it available?” but “What does this fight require right now?” An infused Invigorating Drones cast can improve Doctrine’s own survival as well as an ally’s output. An infused Shrouded Momentum can turn a horizontal rush into free flight. An infused Eternal Scepter shot becomes a larger piercing blast. The exact order and timing depend on the live game state; the official descriptions do not provide cooldown or duration values.
Players who like planning one action ahead will find a natural home here. Players who want every ability to have a fixed, always-on purpose may find Infuse’s choice requirement less comfortable.

Invigorating Drones: ally sustain plus attack speed
Invigorating Drones sends drones to an ally, granting attack speed and healing. When the ability is infused, it also deploys drones on Doctrine.
The base cast therefore supports an ally in two ways at once: it restores health and increases that ally’s attack speed. That combination makes the ability relevant before a fight as well as during a crisis, provided the ally can use the extra output. The infused version adds self-coverage, which changes the risk of positioning Doctrine near the action.
Several practical decisions follow directly from the description:
- Pick the ally deliberately. Healing and attack-speed support are both being assigned to one teammate, so the target should be someone who can convert the benefit into pressure or who is in danger of being overwhelmed.
- Use the infused version when self-sustain matters. The additional drones on Doctrine are the stated difference; do not assume they duplicate every ally effect unless the game’s current tooltip says so.
- Do not treat attack speed as healing. The ability supplies both, but they solve different problems: one preserves health, the other increases output.
This is a particularly good fit for players who enjoy enabling a teammate rather than only reacting to incoming damage. It is less attractive if you dislike choosing a priority ally or tracking whether that ally can take advantage of increased attack speed.

Shrouded Momentum: horizontal rush with two versions
Shrouded Momentum is a horizontal rush with damage reduction. Its infused version grants free flight.
The base ability combines movement with a defensive property. You can therefore read it as a repositioning tool that offers some protection while moving, not merely as a speed boost. The official description does not state the rush’s distance, duration, damage-reduction percentage, collision behavior, or whether it can pass through particular terrain.
Free flight is the defining change in the infused version. That makes Infuse a movement decision as much as a combat decision: you are choosing whether the next ability should create a more flexible route through the battlefield. Because no flight duration or control details are supplied, evaluate the live tooltip rather than relying on a fixed expectation.

Shrouded Momentum should appeal to players who want mobility tied to an explicit decision. If you want movement that is always available in one consistent form and do not enjoy reserving an empowerment for repositioning, this part of Doctrine’s kit may feel restrictive.
Deliverance: alter the health rules for both teams
Deliverance sends out a drone swarm that reduces enemies’ maximum health and grants allies Overhealth. Blizzard’s season announcement summarizes the same two-sided effect: allies receive Overhealth while enemies are limited by reduced maximum health.
This is team utility rather than a simple burst heal or damage button. Overhealth gives your allies additional effective durability, while reducing an enemy’s maximum health changes how much health that enemy can retain. The descriptions do not establish the amount, duration, stacking rules, cleansing rules, or whether the maximum-health reduction persists after the swarm ends.
Use Deliverance when the value of changing everyone’s health state is greater than the value of holding it for a theoretical perfect moment. Its identity is clearest in coordinated engagements: allies can exploit the extra buffer, while enemies have less health capacity to work with. In uncoordinated matches, the same effect still matters, but you must judge timing without assuming teammates will follow a plan.
How Doctrine’s kit fits together
Doctrine’s abilities form a sequence of decisions rather than a single prescribed rotation. A typical thought process looks like this:
- Read the immediate need. Decide whether the next problem is ally survival, enemy pressure, your own position, or a team-wide health swing.
- Choose the ability that addresses that need. Eternal Scepter handles direct healing or damage; Invigorating Drones handles ally sustain and attack speed; Shrouded Momentum handles movement with damage reduction; Deliverance changes team health states.
- Spend Infuse on the most consequential next action. The empowered result differs substantially by ability, so avoid treating Infuse as an automatic pre-cast.
- Reassess after the cast. Doctrine’s value comes from changing jobs as the fight changes. An ally who needed attack speed a moment ago may now need direct healing, while a safe damage angle may have become an escape route.
This is an interpretation of the documented effects, not a claim that one fixed combo is optimal. No reviewed source supplies cooldowns, numerical values, ranked performance, or a universal sequence. The right order will vary with the current game version and the fight in front of you.
Doctrine compared with Moira and Anran
PC Gamer identifies Moira and Anran as movement comparisons for Doctrine. That is a useful starting point if mobility is your main concern, but it is a narrow editorial comparison. It does not establish that the three heroes have identical jobs, equal performance, the same counters, or interchangeable team value.

Choose Doctrine if these playstyle statements sound like you
You want one weapon that can always contribute
Doctrine’s primary fire has a useful target on either side of the fight. You can heal an ally or damage an enemy without changing to a separate weapon mode. That makes him attractive if you dislike downtime in which your weapon has no relevant target.

Infuse asks you to select the next ability that deserves its stronger effect. The reward is flexibility, but the cost is attention: an empowered ability used for a low-value moment cannot also empower the emergency that follows.
You like enabling a teammate’s output
Invigorating Drones combines healing with increased attack speed for an ally. Pick Doctrine if helping a teammate perform better is as satisfying to you as restoring their health.
You want mobility with a defensive element
Shrouded Momentum supplies a horizontal rush and damage reduction, then gains free flight when infused. This suits players who want movement connected to a survivability decision rather than movement as a purely cosmetic reposition.
You like ultimates that change the team’s health math
Deliverance affects allies and enemies at the same time. If you prefer an ultimate that creates a broad team-state change instead of a single-target event, this is a central reason to select Doctrine.
When a movement comparison should guide your choice
If your first question is “Which Support can move the way I want?”, start with the feel of the movement rather than the hero’s reputation. Doctrine’s documented movement is a horizontal rush with damage reduction, with free flight available through Infuse. PC Gamer’s comparison to Moira and Anran suggests that players who value those heroes’ movement may find Doctrine worth trying.

That comparison does not answer whether Moira or Anran is the better pick for healing, damage, team utility, rank, or matchup. To make a movement-based decision, test the following in a controlled session:
- Can you reach the positions you normally need without spending Infuse?
- Does the horizontal rush’s defensive component help you survive the situations that usually eliminate you?
- When you reserve Infuse for movement, are you comfortable giving up the empowered shot, drones, or another option?
- Does free flight solve a real positioning problem for you, or would you rather empower a different ability?
These questions compare your habits with the kit. They do not turn a movement similarity into proof that the heroes are substitutes.
A practical decision process before you queue
- Name your priority. Choose one: flexible healing and damage, ally output, personal movement, or team-wide health manipulation.
- Match the priority to the documented tool. Eternal Scepter covers flexible healing and damage; Invigorating Drones covers ally support; Shrouded Momentum covers movement; Deliverance covers team-wide health states.
- Decide whether you enjoy a setup decision. If selecting the next empowered ability sounds engaging, Doctrine remains a candidate. If it sounds like unnecessary mental overhead, test another hero instead.
- Run a short practice session. Try each ability in its base form, then try Infuse on each eligible ability. Pay attention to which choice you make naturally under pressure.
- Review the current tooltips. The official descriptions supplied here do not include numerical values, and later patches may change the kit. Confirm current durations, amounts, and restrictions in the live game.
- Choose by repeatable comfort, not a presumed tier list. The available material provides no apples-to-apples performance ranking, so your decision should come from the ability pattern you can execute consistently.
Common mistakes when evaluating Doctrine
Assuming every empowered cast is automatically better
Infuse is powerful because it changes the next ability, but the best empowered effect depends on the situation. Using it without deciding what problem you are solving can leave you without the version you actually needed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treating attack speed as a replacement for healing
Invigorating Drones grants both attack speed and healing to an ally. Increased output does not remove the need to monitor that ally’s health, and healing does not guarantee that the ally can capitalize on the extra attack speed.
Saving Deliverance forever
Deliverance has a broad effect, but its exact numbers and duration are not established in the available descriptions. Do not wait for an imagined perfect scenario; use the current tooltip and the actual fight to decide when changing both teams’ health states is valuable.
Reading the Moira or Anran comparison as a full equivalence claim
The cited comparison concerns movement. It is not evidence that the heroes share a role, have matching abilities, or perform equally well in a particular rank or patch.
What is not established about the matchup
No reviewed source supplies a current comparative win rate, pick rate, rank distribution, counter chart, or balance trend for Doctrine, Moira, or Anran. There is also no sourced evidence here that one of them is the strongest Support overall or that Doctrine replaces either comparison hero on every team.

Treat the recommendation as a playstyle choice, then validate it in the current client.
Final recommendation
Play Doctrine when you want a Support who can heal or damage with the same weapon, empower a chosen next action, increase an ally’s attack speed while healing them, move with a damage-reducing rush, and reshape team health through Overhealth and enemy maximum-health reduction. His appeal is the number of meaningful decisions packed into one kit.
Try Moira or Anran when the movement comparison is the feature that draws you, but do not select either solely because a movement resemblance implies identical team value. Compare the live abilities yourself. Since the available evidence does not identify a universally best hero, the most defensible answer to “Which Overwatch hero should I play?” is the one whose ability pattern matches the decisions you want to make every fight.
