How to Find Max Battles and Join Max Mondays in Pokémon GO

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To join a Max Battle in Pokémon GO, find a nearby Power Spot on the map or in the Nearby menu, collect enough Max Particles, bring three eligible Pokémon with at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon, and tap Battle. Max Monday runs every Monday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in your local time, with a featured Dynamax Pokémon appearing at Power Spots during that hour.

This guide explains how to locate a battle, check whether a spot is worth reaching, prepare your team and particles, coordinate with other Trainers, retry after a loss, and understand what happens after victory.

What Max Battles and Max Mondays are

Max Battles take place at temporary map locations called Power Spots. A Dynamax Pokémon appears at a spot and can be challenged by a group of Trainers. Power Spots are not permanent landmarks: they can move or disappear as time passes, so the map location you see earlier may not still be available when you arrive.

Max Monday is the weekly event window for these battles. Niantic describes it as every Monday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM local time. During that hour, a featured Dynamax Pokémon takes over Max Battles at Power Spots. The featured species changes, so check the current in-game event information or Niantic’s current event announcement for that Monday rather than relying on an old schedule.

The event is a time window, not a separate permanent menu. You still find a Power Spot, pay the battle’s Max Particle cost, join a lobby and fight the boss through the normal Max Battle flow.

How to find a current Max Battle

Scan the map for Power Spots

  1. Open Pokémon GO and view the map.
  2. Look for Power Spots as you explore. They are the locations where Max Battles can be available.
  3. Tap a spot to inspect it before walking there. If a Dynamax Pokémon is present, the game can show the boss species, battle difficulty and time remaining.

Map visibility is useful for a quick scan, but it does not guarantee that a spot will remain active until you reach it. Check the remaining time and refresh the map if you have been traveling for a while.

Use the Nearby menu for a wider search

The Nearby menu lists local Power Spots and can provide more decision-making information than the map alone. For a spot containing a Dynamax Pokémon, the listing may show:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the species currently available to battle;
  • the battle difficulty;
  • how much time remains;
  • the location and distance;
  • whether other Trainers are waiting.

Use those details to choose a location you can reach before it closes and, when possible, one where other Trainers are already waiting. A nearby listing is not a reservation: the spot can move or vanish, and the waiting-player indicator can change.

Choose a spot with enough time to finish

Do not judge a location by distance alone. A spot that is slightly farther away but has more time remaining and waiting Trainers may be a better choice than an empty spot that is about to close. If the listing disappears while you are traveling, return to Nearby and select another active Power Spot.

Max Particles: collecting the entry resource

Max Particles are required to enter a Max Battle. The amount varies with the boss’s strength, so there is no single universal entry price for every battle.

Collect particles at a Power Spot

  1. Tap the Power Spot on the map or through its Nearby listing.
  2. Tap the visible Max Particle bubbles at the spot to collect them.
  3. Check your Max Particle balance before selecting Battle.

Niantic also says Max Particles can be collected while exploring, including through Adventure Sync. That gives you another way to build a balance before a scheduled Max Monday session.

Know the published limits

Niantic’s English help page lists two operational limits. The page does not state a publication year, so treat the figures as values to verify in the current game and help article if they are critical to your plan.

Limit Value What it means
Max Particles collected per day 800 The help page says you can collect up to 800 Max Particles in one day.
Max Particles held in the Item Bag 1,500 Your Item Bag cannot hold more than 1,500 at once according to the same help page.

Because both caps constrain preparation, check your balance before you start collecting. If your bag is already at its holding limit, additional collection will not help until you have room. If you need more than the daily collection allowance for a future event, begin preparing ahead of time instead of waiting until Monday evening.

When particles are actually spent

The required particles are deducted only when your group defeats the boss. Selecting a battle and entering the lobby does not by itself consume them. If the group loses, you can rejoin the same battle before the Power Spot closes without paying additional Max Particles.

Prepare your team before you travel

Bring exactly three eligible Pokémon

The battle setup asks you to choose three Pokémon. The party must include at least one Max Pokémon, and only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can participate. Ordinary Pokémon that do not meet one of those categories cannot fill the battle party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Select three Pokémon that are eligible for Max Battles.
  • Verify that at least one of the three is Dynamax or Gigantamax before you leave the selection screen.
  • Prepare the party in advance so you are not spending the lobby timer searching through your collection.

Power up Max Moves when possible

Niantic recommends powering up Max Moves before taking on a boss. This is preparation rather than an entry requirement: you still need the required particles and an eligible three-Pokémon party, but improved Max Moves can make the encounter easier for your group.

Because the boss species and difficulty vary, use the difficulty shown at the Power Spot as a planning signal. A group facing a harder battle should coordinate its available Max Pokémon and moves before anyone presses Battle.

Plan for local coordination

Max Battles are group encounters with room for up to four Trainers. Niantic recommends using Campfire to find local Trainers for Max Monday. Coordinate the meeting point and arrival time before the 6:00 PM start so the group can spend the event window battling rather than searching.

If you are playing alone, use the Nearby waiting-player indicator to identify spots where other Trainers may already be gathering. That indicator is a snapshot, so confirm the lobby after you arrive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to join a Max Battle step by step

  1. Open the map or Nearby. Locate an active Power Spot and inspect its boss, difficulty and remaining time.
  2. Travel to the spot. Keep the closing time in mind; Power Spots can disappear or move.
  3. Collect Max Particles. Tap the spot and collect its Max Particle bubbles if you need more. Confirm that your balance covers the boss’s variable entry cost.
  4. Tap the Power Spot. Choose Battle when the option is available.
  5. Choose three Pokémon. Make sure the party contains at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Only those Max Pokémon types are allowed to participate.
  6. Enter the lobby. Up to four Trainers can challenge the boss together. If fewer than four are present, the lobby proceeds when its timer reaches zero.
  7. Fight the boss. Use the prepared party and Max Moves. The result determines whether particles are deducted.

The practical sequence is therefore Power Spot → Max Particles → Battle → three-Pokémon party → lobby. If the Battle button is unavailable, resolve the particle, eligibility or availability issue before trying to enter again.

What happens if the team loses

A failed attempt does not automatically cost another set of Max Particles. You may rejoin and try again before that Power Spot closes, and particles are deducted only after the boss is defeated.

Use the retry opportunity to change the problem that caused the loss: coordinate with additional Trainers, select a stronger eligible party, or power up Max Moves before re-entering. Do not leave the location assuming you can return later; the spot may disappear when its active period ends.

What happens after victory

Defeating the boss deducts the required Max Particles and grants rewards, along with a chance to catch the defeated boss. The catch opportunity follows a successful battle, so a failed attempt does not provide that encounter.

After winning, a Trainer may leave a Pokémon at the Power Spot to assist future challengers. Leaving one is an optional post-battle action; it is not required to receive the battle’s rewards or encounter chance.

A practical Max Monday schedule

Before Monday evening

  • Check the current featured Dynamax Pokémon in the game or official event information.
  • Build a sufficient Max Particle balance while exploring, using Adventure Sync if you normally use it.
  • Confirm that your Item Bag has room and that your balance is below the 1,500 holding limit.
  • Prepare three eligible Pokémon, including at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon.
  • Power up useful Max Moves and decide whether you need to coordinate with other Trainers through Campfire.

At the start of the event

  1. At or before 6:00 PM local time, open the map and Nearby menu.
  2. Compare active Power Spots by featured species, difficulty, remaining time, distance and waiting-player status.
  3. Choose a location your group can reach promptly and travel there.

During the 6:00–7:00 PM window

Arrive with the party and particles ready, then enter the lobby as soon as the group is assembled. If a battle fails, use the same spot’s remaining time for a retry rather than assuming the particles are gone. If a spot closes or disappears, switch to another active listing.

For a longer outdoor session

Map-based play can keep you outside for an extended period. A USB-C portable power bank is an optional convenience for keeping a phone charged; it is not a requirement for Max Battles and is not a substitute for checking the spot’s closing time or your particle balance.

How to choose between nearby Power Spots

When several locations are available, use the information Niantic exposes in Nearby instead of choosing randomly.

Selection factor Why it matters How to use it
Boss species Max Monday and regular Max Battles can feature different Pokémon. Pick the species you want to challenge or catch, after confirming the current event feature.
Battle difficulty Difficulty indicates how demanding the encounter may be. Match the difficulty to the strength of your prepared party and the size of your group.
Time remaining Power Spots are temporary. Favor a spot that leaves enough time to travel, fill the lobby and retry if necessary.
Distance and location A nearby spot reduces travel risk. Choose a reachable location rather than one that may close before arrival.
Waiting Trainers Additional players can make a group battle practical. Use the indicator to prioritize gathering points, then verify the actual lobby after arriving.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Power Spot is not on the map

Check Nearby, refresh your map and confirm that the spot’s active period has not ended. Power Spots can move or disappear, so a location seen earlier may no longer be available.

  • 2-Day Power, Zero Battery Anxiety: With a massive TSA-compliant 20,000mAh capacity, this power bank fuels your journey with about 4 full charges for phones or 2 full charges for tablets. From morning commutes to weekend getaways, stay powered and connected without ever being tethered to a wall.
  • Simplify Your Carry: Never forget your cable again with the built-in braided USB-C cable. Tested for 10,000+ bends, it eliminates tangled wires in your bag. Plus, a built-in flashlight adds extra peace of mind for emergencies.
  • Charge 3 Devices at Once: Low on battery? Charge up to 3 devices simultaneously—your phone, tablet, and more.

The spot appears, but there is no Battle option

Inspect whether the location still has an active Dynamax Pokémon and whether its time has expired. Then check that your Max Particle balance covers the variable cost. If the balance is sufficient, review the party requirement: you need three eligible Pokémon and at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon.

You do not have enough Max Particles

Collect the bubbles at the Power Spot and continue exploring to gather more, including through Adventure Sync. If you have reached the daily collection limit or the Item Bag holding limit listed above, plan around those caps rather than repeatedly tapping the same location.

Your Pokémon cannot be selected

Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can participate. Replace any ordinary Pokémon in the proposed party and ensure that all three selected Pokémon meet the battle’s eligibility rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No other Trainers are in the lobby

Use the Nearby waiting-player indicator to search for another spot, or coordinate locally through Campfire. A lobby can include up to four Trainers and starts when four have joined or when its timer reaches zero, so arrive early enough for others to join.

The group loses

Rejoin before the Power Spot closes. The failed attempt does not deduct additional Max Particles; particles are charged after a successful defeat. Improve the party or add Trainers before the retry.

The Power Spot closes while you are preparing

Return to the map or Nearby menu and select another active location. Temporary availability is part of the Power Spot system, so keep the remaining-time indicator in view while traveling and organizing the lobby.

Key points to remember

  • Max Monday is every Monday from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM local time.
  • The featured Dynamax Pokémon changes; verify the current selection in the game or official event information.
  • Power Spots appear on the map and in Nearby, but they can move or disappear.
  • Collect Max Particles at spots and while exploring; the English Niantic help page lists 800 collected per day and 1,500 held in the Item Bag.
  • Enter with enough particles and three Pokémon, including at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon.
  • Up to four Trainers can challenge together.
  • Particles are deducted only after victory, and a defeated group can retry before the spot closes.
