Yes—if the handheld is a Nintendo 2DS-family system. The original Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL run Nintendo 3DS games in 2D, without the glasses-free stereoscopic effect. The New Nintendo 2DS XL also runs software made specifically for New Nintendo 3DS systems. A generic third-party handheld is a different question: portability and a similar-looking screen do not establish Nintendo 3DS compatibility.
What “without glasses-free 3D” actually changes
Nintendo’s 3D feature is a visual presentation mode. On a Nintendo 3DS, the depth slider controls the stereoscopic effect produced by the upper screen. Moving it to the lowest setting gives you a conventional 2D image; the game remains the same software.

The Nintendo 2DS removes that stereoscopic display hardware and presents supported 3DS software in 2D by design. That is not an unofficial workaround or a reduced-compatibility mode. Nintendo documents the 2DS as a system that plays Nintendo 3DS games in 2D, while the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL can display those games in either 2D or 3D.
Therefore, “properly” needs to be separated into two questions:

- Does the game run? On a Nintendo 2DS-family system, supported Nintendo 3DS software runs normally in 2D.
- Does it show stereoscopic depth? No. The original 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL are 2D-only.
If your priority is playing the software rather than seeing depth effects, the lack of glasses-free 3D is not, by itself, a compatibility problem.

The key distinction is not simply whether a system has a 3D screen. It is the generation of software the hardware supports. The original 2DS belongs to the 3DS family and runs ordinary 3DS games, but it does not run titles that require New Nintendo 3DS hardware. The New Nintendo 2DS XL does.
Why the New Nintendo 2DS XL is the safest 2D choice
Nintendo’s product information describes the New Nintendo 2DS XL as playing all existing Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games in 2D, including New Nintendo 3DS titles such as Super Nintendo Virtual Console games. That makes it the clearest documented choice for someone who wants broad official 3DS compatibility without stereoscopic 3D.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL is no longer manufactured. In practice, buyers generally encounter used or refurbished units, so the model name alone is not enough. Condition, included hardware, region, and the seller’s description all matter. A listing that says only “2DS” may refer to the original model, which lacks support for New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive games.
Original Nintendo 2DS: what works and what does not
Standard Nintendo 3DS software
The original Nintendo 2DS plays Nintendo 3DS games in 2D. This includes the normal 3DS library that is supported across the broader 3DS family. You do not need a 3D-capable screen for a game to start or for its ordinary gameplay systems to function.
New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software
The original 2DS does not support games that require New Nintendo 3DS hardware. Nintendo’s compatibility information distinguishes the original 2DS from the New Nintendo 2DS XL on this point. If a game’s packaging or official documentation identifies it as requiring New Nintendo 3DS, the original 2DS is the wrong model even though both systems lack a 3D display.

This is the most important exception to the simple advice that “a 2DS plays 3DS games.” The statement is accurate for standard 3DS software, but it is incomplete if you plan to play the New Nintendo 3DS-only subset.

Does removing 3D reduce the game itself?
For software supported by the 2DS, the answer is no in the compatibility sense. Nintendo defines the 2DS experience as the same 3DS software presented in 2D. The stereoscopic effect is optional on systems that have it and absent by design on 2DS models.
Some games use visual depth as an artistic enhancement, so their scenes may look flatter in 2D. That is a change in presentation, not evidence that the title is unsupported. A 2DS owner should expect a conventional single image rather than two offset images creating depth.
If a title actually requires New Nintendo 3DS processing or features, the issue is hardware generation, not the missing 3D screen. That is why checking the game’s New Nintendo 3DS requirement is more useful than checking whether the handheld has a 3D slider.

What about a generic handheld or emulator?
“A handheld without glasses-free 3D” is a description of a display, not a compatibility standard. Nintendo’s documented compatibility guidance identifies Nintendo 3DS-family systems as the supported hardware for Nintendo 3DS software. It does not establish that an unrelated handheld can accept Nintendo 3DS game cards or run Nintendo 3DS software.

Third-party handhelds may advertise emulation, but that claim must be evaluated for the exact model, operating system, emulator version, and game. Do not infer reliable compatibility from a processor name, a similar screen size, a video demonstration of one title, or the fact that the device runs other Nintendo systems. Without model-specific evidence, there is no official basis for promising that 3DS games will run properly.
There is also a practical difference between an official 2DS and an emulation device. The 2DS is part of Nintendo’s supported 3DS hardware family. A third-party product is independently configured, so controls, screen layout, performance, software setup, and game compatibility can vary. If you want the least ambiguous answer, choose a Nintendo 2DS-family system rather than treating every screen-equipped handheld as a 3DS substitute.
New Nintendo 2DS XL versus original 2DS: a buying decision
Choose the original Nintendo 2DS when
- You want standard Nintendo 3DS games in 2D.
- You do not need New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive titles.
- You have confirmed that the specific games you care about do not require New Nintendo 3DS hardware.
Choose the New Nintendo 2DS XL when
- You want the broadest documented 2D compatibility within the 2DS line.
- You want access to New Nintendo 3DS software as well as ordinary 3DS games.
- You are comfortable buying a discontinued system and checking a used or refurbished unit carefully.
Neither model provides glasses-free 3D. The decision is about software-generation support, not about choosing between a 2D and 3D mode.
Region compatibility matters on used systems
Before buying a console or game from another country, check the region. Nintendo’s UK product information warns that software from other regions cannot be used on the New Nintendo 2DS XL. A console that appears to be the correct model can still be a poor match for a game bought from a different market.

- Identify the exact console model: Nintendo 2DS or New Nintendo 2DS XL.
- Identify the console’s market or region from the listing, packaging, or system information.
- Check the game’s region before purchase.
- For a New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive title, confirm that the console is a New Nintendo 2DS XL rather than the original 2DS.
- Ask for clear photographs and a return option when buying used, since manufacturing has ended and condition varies between units.
Nintendo DS and DSi games: a separate backward-compatibility question
The 3DS family also supports most Nintendo DS software, and DS and DSi games are displayed in 2D. This is separate from the main 3DS-game question, but it is useful when choosing a 2DS-family system for a mixed library.
Nintendo notes an important exception: some DS titles depend on accessories that use the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. Those accessories are not supported by 3DS-family systems, so the associated games or features may not work as they did on original DS hardware. A 2DS can therefore be an excellent fit for ordinary DS and 3DS software while still being unsuitable for a DS title that requires that legacy accessory connection.
Troubleshooting when a game does not run
The console is an original Nintendo 2DS
First check whether the game is marked as requiring New Nintendo 3DS. If it is, the behavior is expected: the original 2DS does not support that category. The remedy is a New Nintendo 2DS XL or another compatible New Nintendo 3DS-family system.

The console is a New Nintendo 2DS XL but the game is from another region
Review the region of both the console and the software. Nintendo’s regional warning means that a mismatched import may not be usable, even when the model and title are otherwise compatible.
The device is not a Nintendo 3DS-family system
Do not treat the failure as evidence that all 2D handhelds are incompatible. Instead, verify the exact third-party model and its documented software support. Compatibility must be demonstrated for that device and setup; the absence of a 3D screen neither proves nor disproves emulation.
The game uses a DS-era accessory
If the title depends on a Game Boy Advance-slot accessory, the 3DS-family limitation is expected. Check whether the feature you need is one of the accessory-dependent functions rather than ordinary DS gameplay.
Bottom line for shoppers
A Nintendo 2DS is a legitimate way to play Nintendo 3DS games without glasses-free 3D. The original model handles standard 3DS software in 2D, while the New Nintendo 2DS XL adds support for New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive titles and is the stronger choice when compatibility breadth matters. A generic handheld cannot be judged from its display alone: only model-specific compatibility evidence can establish whether it runs 3DS software.
