Usually, no. A generic USB WiFi adapter does not normally work as a network adapter when plugged directly into a PS4. The console is designed to use its built-in WiFi or its built-in Ethernet port. If you need to connect a PS4 wirelessly from a distant room, use a wireless bridge or travel router with an Ethernet port, then connect that device to the PS4 with a LAN cable.
Sony’s documented setup supports WiFi and LAN connections through Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection; it does not provide a normal setup or driver-installation process for third-party USB WiFi dongles.

Why a generic USB WiFi adapter usually does not work
Most USB WiFi adapters are designed for Windows, macOS, Linux, or another operating system that can install the adapter’s drivers and manage its wireless hardware. A PS4 does not offer a general driver-installation system for unsupported USB networking devices.

That only proves the port is providing power. It does not mean the PS4 has recognized the adapter or can use it as a network interface. In most cases, the PS4’s network menus will continue to show only its internal WiFi hardware and built-in LAN connection.

How the PS4 connects to the internet
PS4 consoles normally connect in two ways:
- Built-in WiFi: Sony’s later PS4 and PS4 Pro specifications list IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac wireless networking, although exact specifications vary by model revision.
- Built-in Ethernet: The PS4 includes a 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T LAN port.
The USB ports are intended for supported accessories and storage, not as a universal way to add networking hardware. Check Sony’s PS4 specifications and model documentation if you need the exact hardware details for your console.
Best alternative: use a wireless bridge
A wireless bridge, client-mode router, or suitable travel router connects to your home WiFi and provides an Ethernet connection for the PS4:

Home WiFi <-> wireless bridge or travel router <-> Ethernet cable <-> PS4
This works because the bridge handles the WiFi connection. The PS4 sees an ordinary wired Ethernet connection through its supported LAN port; it is not trying to use an unknown USB wireless chipset.
A compact travel router such as the TP-Link TL-WR902AC is an example of the type of product to investigate. Confirm the exact hardware revision and firmware support for client, bridge, or repeater mode before buying; the available modes can vary.
Practical options by situation
| Situation | Best option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The router is nearby | Direct Ethernet or the PS4’s built-in WiFi | No extra hardware if WiFi is reliable |
| Maximum stability for online play | Direct Ethernet | Requires cable routing |
| The router is far away | Wireless bridge or travel router with Ethernet | Needs configuration and an extra device |
| Coverage is poor throughout the home | Mesh node or WiFi extender with Ethernet | More expensive; performance depends on placement |
| The internal PS4 WiFi is faulty | Ethernet, wireless bridge, or repair | A USB dongle is not the normal repair path |
| Temporary internet access | Phone hotspot or cellular hotspot | Possible data limits, latency, and carrier NAT |
| WiFi is poor but electrical wiring is suitable | Powerline Ethernet kit | Results vary with the home’s wiring |

Use a wireless bridge or travel router
- Configure the bridge or travel router to join your home WiFi network.
- Place it close enough to the PS4 for a short Ethernet cable, while keeping it in a strong WiFi signal area.
- Connect the device’s LAN port to the PS4’s LAN port.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Use a LAN Cable, then choose Easy.
- Run the connection test.
This arrangement bypasses the PS4’s internal WiFi interface. It does not improve the internal WiFi hardware itself.

Use a phone hotspot
- Enable Personal Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot on your phone.
- On the PS4, go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Use Wi-Fi > Easy.
- Select the phone’s hotspot, enter its password, and test the connection.
Hotspot performance depends on cellular signal, carrier policy, data allowances, NAT behavior, and network congestion. It can also drain the phone’s battery quickly. For regular use, a dedicated cellular hotspot or 4G/5G router with Ethernet is usually more practical. USB tethering from an Android phone or iPhone is not an officially documented, normal PS4 connection method.

USB cellular modem
A USB 3G, 4G, or 5G modem should not be assumed to work directly with a PS4. These devices also need drivers and modem-management support. Use a phone hotspot, dedicated hotspot, cellular router, or a computer that shares its connection through Ethernet instead.

USB-to-Ethernet adapter
A generic USB-to-Ethernet adapter is not a guaranteed PS4 solution. The console already has an Ethernet port, and Sony’s normal wired setup is to connect a LAN cable directly to it. Specialized unofficial environments may behave differently, but that is outside ordinary supported PS4 operation.
DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor is a controller accessory, not an internet adapter. Its instructions state that it cannot be used with a PlayStation 4 system; it was intended primarily to connect a DUALSHOCK 4 controller to compatible Windows PCs and Macs. It does not provide WiFi or internet access.

Troubleshooting
The dongle’s light turns on, but no WiFi option appears
The light indicates power, not compatibility. Remove the dongle and use the PS4’s internal WiFi, its LAN port, or a wireless bridge.
The PS4 cannot see your home network
- Move the PS4 closer to the router or reduce walls and other obstructions.
- Restart both the router and console.
- Check that the network is broadcasting and is not hidden.
- Try Set Up Manually.
- Test a phone hotspot. If the PS4 sees the hotspot, the router or its configuration may be the issue; if it sees no networks, the console’s internal WiFi hardware may need attention.
Sony’s PS4 support guidance also recommends reducing distance and obstructions when troubleshooting WiFi.
The PS4 connects, but gaming is unreliable
Weak signal, interference, congested 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz channels, strict NAT, cellular latency, router placement, other devices using bandwidth, and PlayStation Network or ISP problems can all affect online play. A direct LAN connection is generally the most reliable fix; Sony recommends LAN when a more stable connection is needed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A product listing says “PS4 compatible”
Read the manufacturer’s documentation carefully. The phrase may refer to a controller accessory, use with a computer or router in a PS4 setup, unofficial firmware, or compatibility with a different console. For direct USB networking, look for explicit manufacturer documentation stating that the product functions as a USB network adapter on a standard PS4. Marketplace wording alone is not proof.
Bottom line
Do not buy a generic USB WiFi dongle expecting it to add wireless networking to a PS4. Use the console’s built-in WiFi when it works, direct Ethernet for the best stability, or a wireless bridge/travel router with an Ethernet output when the router is too far away. A phone or cellular hotspot is useful for temporary access, while a failed internal WiFi card is best bypassed with Ethernet or repaired—not replaced with an ordinary USB adapter.
