It can play regular Blu-ray discs at up to 1080p, and a connected 4K TV may upscale that lower-resolution signal.
The important distinction is between a standard Blu-ray disc, a 4K television, 4K upscaling, and a genuine Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

The short answer
No PS3 model is documented by Sony as supporting Ultra HD Blu-ray playback. The console’s official specifications list standard Blu-ray formats and a maximum documented video output of 1080p—not 2160p or 3840×2160.
That means:
- Regular Blu-ray discs: Yes, normally.
- Ultra HD Blu-ray discs: No.
- Connection to a 4K TV: Usually possible through HDMI, depending on the television’s input compatibility.
- Native 4K output: No documented support.
- Upscaled picture on a 4K TV: Yes, because the television may upscale the PS3’s 720p or 1080p signal.
Sony’s PS3 specifications list output modes including 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 576p, and 576i, but do not list 2160p/4K.

What “4K Blu-ray” can mean
The phrase 4K Blu-ray is often used loosely, but it can refer to different things.
| Term | Meaning | PS3 support |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Blu-ray | Conventional Blu-ray video, commonly 1920×1080 | Yes, subject to disc and console compatibility |
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | A separate physical-disc format designed for 4K video, HDR, newer encoding, and higher-capacity media | No |
| 4K TV | A display with approximately 3840×2160 pixels | Can potentially display an upscaled PS3 signal |
| 4K upscaling | Processing a lower-resolution image so it fills a 4K panel | Usually performed by the TV or another external device |
A standard Blu-ray labeled “4K remastered” or “4K mastered” may still be an ordinary 1080p Blu-ray. The label does not automatically mean the disc is Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Can a PS3 play regular Blu-ray discs?
Yes. The PS3 was designed with a Blu-ray drive and supports standard formats such as BD-ROM, BD-R, and supported BD-RE media. Its documentation also lists DVD and CD formats, along with other supported media types.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compatibility can still vary because of the console model, disc region, recording method, authoring, physical damage, manufacturing differences, and copy-protection behavior. A standard Blu-ray should not be confused with a UHD Blu-ray simply because both use a similar-looking optical disc.
Can a PS3 play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc?
No. A PS3 is not an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Its official playable-disc list does not include UHD Blu-ray, and its maximum documented video output is 1080p.

This is not merely a missing menu option. UHD playback requires support for the UHD disc format, compatible optical-drive and media specifications, appropriate video decoding and processing, content-protection requirements, and a compatible output chain. A PS3 firmware update cannot turn the console into a certified UHD Blu-ray player.
If you insert a UHD disc into a PS3, do not expect it to launch as a movie. The exact behavior may vary by disc and system software, so a specific error message should not be assumed. If a UHD combo pack includes a separate standard Blu-ray disc, that standard disc may play in the PS3; the UHD disc will not.

Can the PS3 output 4K to a 4K TV?
Not natively, according to Sony’s documented specifications. The PS3’s HDMI video modes include 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and lower regional modes. Sony’s video-output guide does not document a 2160p mode.
A 4K TV can often accept the PS3’s HDMI signal and enlarge it to fit the television’s 4K panel. This is best described as 4K display compatibility, not 4K output. HDMI carries the signal generated by the console; it does not add UHD decoding or create native 4K detail.

For protected Blu-ray playback, Sony specifies an HDMI connection to an HDCP-compatible display for 1080p output. Because TV input behavior varies, use the television’s supported HDMI input and the PS3’s automatic display-output detection when configuring the connection.

It may make the image occupy the entire 4K screen, but it does not turn the source into native 4K. The chain is typically:
- The PS3 reads and decodes a standard Blu-ray.
- The PS3 sends a signal of up to 1080p.
- The 4K TV—or an AV receiver or external video processor—scales that signal to the panel’s 3840×2160 resolution.
The result can look good, depending on the television’s scaler, the quality of the Blu-ray transfer, viewing distance, and screen size. However, the additional pixels are generated during scaling; they are not the same as detail captured in a native 4K source. A PS3 connected to a 4K television also does not unlock UHD-disc HDR or other features associated with Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Can the PS3 upscale Blu-ray to 4K?
Not by itself. The PS3 has BD/DVD upscaling controls, but Sony documents those options within the console’s supported HD output modes rather than as 2160p output.

What different disc labels mean
| Disc or label | Plays on PS3? | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Blu-ray, including ordinary 1080p Blu-ray | Yes, normally | Playback with output up to 1080p |
| “4K remastered” or “4K mastered” standard Blu-ray | Usually, if it is ordinary Blu-ray media | Still standard Blu-ray playback and resolution |
| Ultra HD Blu-ray / 4K UHD disc | No | Requires a UHD-capable player |
| Standard Blu-ray included in a UHD combo pack | Yes, if otherwise compatible | The PS3 plays the included standard Blu-ray |
| DVD | Yes, subject to format and region limits | May be upscaled within the PS3’s supported modes |
Does any PS3 model support 4K Blu-ray?
No PS3 model should be treated as a UHD Blu-ray player. Model differences affect features such as hard-drive capacity, power consumption, physical size, PlayStation 2 compatibility, USB ports, card readers, and some audio or video functions. They do not change the central answer: Sony does not document any PS3 model as supporting Ultra HD Blu-ray or native 4K movie output.
What about 3D Blu-ray?
Some PS3 models and system software support stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray playback with compatible equipment. That capability should not be confused with 4K support. The PS3 can support certain 3D features while still having a documented maximum output of 1080p.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a firmware update add 4K support?
No. Updates remain useful for standard Blu-ray playback because the PS3 may need to renew its Blu-ray encryption key. Sony’s current support instructions are:
- Open Settings.
- Select System Update.
- Select Update via Internet.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
See Sony’s PS3 support page for the official update process. Updating can maintain standard Blu-ray functionality, but it does not add UHD-disc support or a 2160p output mode.

Troubleshooting a standard Blu-ray that will not play
If the disc is supposed to be a regular Blu-ray, try these steps:
- Check the format. Confirm that it is not an Ultra HD Blu-ray. Look for “Ultra HD Blu-ray” or “4K UHD” on the disc and case.
- Check the region. Standard Blu-ray region restrictions may prevent playback on a console from another region.
- Update the PS3. Use Settings → System Update → Update via Internet to renew the AACS encryption key when required.
- Use HDMI for HD output. Confirm that the display and connection are HDCP-compatible.
- Inspect the disc. Clean away dust and check for scratches, warping, or apparent manufacturing defects.
- Test another known-good Blu-ray. If several reliable discs fail, the optical drive may be deteriorating.
- Restart the console. Power the PS3 off completely, restart it, and try the disc again.
- Check parental controls. Settings may prevent certain titles from playing.
Sony notes that playback can be affected by disc condition, recording quality, manufacturing variation, encoding, and copy-protection requirements. A single failed disc does not necessarily prove that the drive is defective, while repeated failures with known-good discs are more concerning.
What should you use for 4K UHD discs?
If you own physical UHD discs, you need a device explicitly labeled Ultra HD Blu-ray or 4K UHD Blu-ray playback. “Blu-ray,” “Full HD,” or “4K upscaling” alone is not enough.
- Dedicated UHD Blu-ray player: The simplest choice for movie playback. Check HDR support, Dolby Vision if needed, HDMI audio options, firmware support, and disc-region compatibility.
- Disc-equipped game console: Useful if you also want modern gaming and media features. Make sure the specific model has an optical drive; digital-only versions cannot play physical discs.
- Computer-based setup: Possible with compatible hardware and software, but drive, application, DRM, and operating-system requirements can be more complicated.
A used PS3 remains a reasonable choice for PS3 games, DVDs, and standard Blu-ray discs. It is not a budget substitute for a UHD player. Conversely, if you only own standard Blu-ray discs and are happy with the picture produced by your 4K TV’s scaler, there may be no need to replace the PS3 solely for resolution.
Bottom line
The PS3 is a standard Blu-ray and 1080p console, not a 4K UHD Blu-ray player. A 4K television can upscale the PS3’s signal, but neither the console nor its optical drive becomes capable of reading UHD discs or producing native 4K movie detail.
