Yes—several Assassin’s Creed games let you adjust difficulty, but there is no franchise-wide setting or shared difficulty scale. The options depend on the specific game: some divide challenge across combat and stealth, while others also include exploration, naval combat, or activities. Check the menu for the exact title you own.
How difficulty settings differ across Assassin’s Creed games
Ubisoft’s examples show why “difficulty” does not mean the same thing in every entry. In some games, you can tune multiple systems separately instead of choosing one setting that affects everything.
| Game | Adjustable areas | Can areas be adjusted separately? | Additional challenge options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Combat: four settings; stealth: four settings. Ubisoft does not name the levels or describe their effects in its feature list. | Yes; combat and stealth have separate settings. | No additional option is described in the cited feature list. |
| Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Combat: four settings; stealth: three; exploration: three. | Yes; the three areas can be tuned independently. | Guaranteed Assassinate can let you assassinate higher-level enemies regardless of the selected difficulty. |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage | The cited update notes add Hardened Assassin and Ultimate Assassin, alongside a Custom Difficulty preset. | The cited notes establish a custom preset, but do not describe separate gameplay-area sliders. | Hardened Assassin matches Assassin (Normal) but gives enemies higher defense; it falls between Assassin and Master Assassin (Hard). Ultimate Assassin is the hardest setting. Preset rewards can be earned by completing a permadeath run at the corresponding difficulty. |
| Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced | Combat, stealth, naval combat, and activities each have Forgiving, Intended (default), and Hard options. | Yes; the four areas are independent and can be changed during play. | Settings affect factors such as enemy attacks and player damage, detection and searches, ship damage and bracing, and activity damage, creature frequency, and dodge windows. |
These are examples, not a complete list of every Assassin’s Creed release. Likewise, difficulty labels in different games should not be treated as equivalent: each title defines its own settings and effects.
What the settings change in specific games
Shadows: separate combat and stealth difficulty
Ubisoft’s accessibility feature list for Assassin’s Creed Shadows identifies four difficulty settings for combat and four for stealth. It does not give the level names or explain how each one changes play, so the available evidence confirms separate controls but not which option is easiest or what its precise effects are.

Valhalla: combat, stealth, and exploration
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers four combat settings and three each for stealth and exploration, according to Ubisoft. Ubisoft UX Director Franck Murcia described the approach this way: “For an open-world game, you have a lot of components that are a part of the experience, and we thought it was natural to allow the player to really tweak those three aspects – fighting, stealth, and exploration – of the game,”
Valhalla also has a specific assassination option. With Guaranteed Assassinate enabled, you can assassinate higher-level enemies regardless of the selected difficulty. With it off, an assassination attempt against some higher-level enemies only partially damages them. This option changes how assassination interacts with level differences; it is not another name for the combat difficulty setting.

Mirage: added settings and a custom preset
Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.1.0 notes add Hardened Assassin, Ultimate Assassin, and a Custom Difficulty preset. Hardened Assassin is described as equivalent to Assassin (Normal) except that enemies have higher defense, placing it between Assassin and Master Assassin (Hard). Ultimate Assassin is described as the hardest difficulty. The notes also say that preset rewards can be earned by completing a permadeath run at the corresponding difficulty.
Black Flag Resynced: four independently adjustable areas
Ubisoft describes four difficulty areas in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: combat, stealth, naval combat, and activities. Each has Forgiving, Intended (the default), and Hard options, and settings can be changed during play. The effects vary by area: combat options affect enemy attack behavior and player damage; stealth options affect detection and searches; naval options affect ship damage and bracing; and activity options affect damage, creature frequency, and dodge windows.

There is no single menu path that applies across the series, and the available Ubisoft information does not provide menu paths for all the titles above. To find the right controls, start with the exact game and its version, then look in that title’s settings or accessibility menus. Do not assume that a difficulty name or menu location carries over from another entry.

Some games offer options that may suit players seeking a less demanding experience, but the labels differ. For example, Black Flag Resynced calls its lowest option Forgiving, while the available Ubisoft feature list for Shadows does not name its four combat or stealth levels. Check the options for your specific game rather than looking for a series-wide “Easy” mode.

Which difficulty should you choose?
Choose based on the part of play you want to adjust, where the game allows separate controls. If combat is the sticking point but stealth or exploration feels right, a title with independent settings may let you change only combat. In Valhalla, Guaranteed Assassinate is also worth checking if level differences are interrupting stealth play. In Black Flag Resynced, naval combat and activities have their own settings in addition to combat and stealth.
If you are deciding between named presets in Mirage, Ubisoft describes Hardened Assassin as Normal with higher-defense enemies and Ultimate Assassin as the hardest setting. Difficulty names are title-specific, so use the descriptions and effects provided in your game rather than comparing labels across entries.
