Does PlayStation Have Better Graphics Performance Than Xbox?

Xbox Series X leads the standard PS5 on published GPU compute, but graphics performance varies by game. PS5 Pro is a separate comparison.

For the standard PS5 versus Xbox Series X, Xbox has the higher published GPU compute specification—but that does not make it the winner in every game. Graphics performance depends on the game, its chosen settings and mode, and the software build. PS5 Pro is a separate comparison, not the same hardware as the standard PS5.

Which console has better graphics on paper?

Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X GPU at 12 TFLOPS, with 52 compute units running at 1.825 GHz. Sony’s current CFI-21XX PS5 instruction manual lists a 10 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based GPU. Sony’s original March 2020 hardware article instead gives 10.3 TFLOPS and identifies the GPU as RDNA 2. Those figures come from different Sony sources and should be attributed rather than treated as interchangeable measurements.

On the published compute figures, Xbox Series X is higher than the standard PS5. These are manufacturer specifications, not a direct measure of how every game looks or runs. TFLOPS alone cannot settle which console delivers better graphics in a particular title.

Why specs do not decide game performance

Developers set a game’s resolution, frame-rate target, visual settings, and performance trade-offs for each platform. Xbox Director of Product Management Jason Ronald described resolution and frame rate as creative decisions for game developers, while saying the system was designed to support different kinds of games and creators. Microsoft’s technical overview explains that approach in its Xbox Series X technical overview.

That means a console can have the higher published GPU figure without producing the better result in every side-by-side comparison. A game might render at a different resolution, use different visual settings, or target a different balance between image quality and smoothness on each system. The relevant question is what the same game does on each console—not which spec sheet has the bigger number.

How to compare graphics in the same game

For a useful comparison, match the game, graphics mode, and software build. Check the following separately rather than treating “graphics” as a single score:

  • Image quality and rendering resolution: distinguish the resolution at which a game renders from the resolution sent to the display and any upscaling used.
  • Frame rate: separate a stated target from measured performance, stability, and frame pacing. A 60 fps target is not proof that the game holds 60 fps throughout.
  • Ray tracing: compare which effects are enabled and whether using them changes resolution, frame rate, or other visual settings.
  • Mode and build: make sure both versions use the same or clearly identified mode and patch. Updates can change a comparison; Digital Foundry noted multiple changes to game code during its analysis of a particular title.

Digital Foundry’s specific-game console comparison looks at image quality, visual settings, ray tracing, and performance. It is an example of title-specific testing, not evidence of a universal winner across games.

Does PS5 Pro perform better than Xbox Series X?

PS5 Pro is a distinct model from the standard PS5, so it should be assessed separately. In its September 10, 2024 announcement, Sony said PS5 Pro had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s launch claims, not independent, across-game benchmark results.

Sony’s current PS5 Pro page describes PSSR, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates in compatible games. It says compatible titles can play at 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution. Those are conditional capabilities; they do not establish that every game reaches those results, or that PS5 Pro beats Xbox Series X in every title.

What your TV changes—and what it does not

A display can limit which output features you can use, but it does not change a console’s rendering power. Sony says 120 Hz output requires both a compatible TV and a game that supports 120 Hz, and that VRR results vary by TV. “Supports up to 120 Hz” therefore does not mean every game runs at 120 fps. Sony’s PS5 resolution and display support guide covers these conditions.

How to reach a defensible verdict

  1. Name the PlayStation model. Decide whether the comparison is standard PS5 versus Xbox Series X or PS5 Pro versus Xbox Series X.
  2. Choose a specific game. A claim about one game does not automatically apply to another.
  3. Match modes and builds. Record the graphics mode and patch or build being compared.
  4. Compare outcomes separately. Look at rendered image quality, frame-rate performance and stability, ray-tracing effects, and the trade-offs each mode makes.
  5. Check the display condition. Confirm that the TV and game support any high-refresh output being discussed.

Without matched tests across a representative set of current games, the manufacturer specifications support a hardware-on-paper comparison, not a single real-world winner for all graphics performance.
