Why Avowed’s romance answer changed after launch
The apparent contradiction comes down to timing and scope. In pre-release comments reproduced by launch-era coverage of an IGN interview, game director Carrie Patel said the team was building thoughtful relationships with companions, but was not making a romance system for Avowed. After release, GamesRadar+ and PC Gamer reported a small amount of companion romance in the game.
Those reports point to a specific, limited relationship with Kai rather than a broad set of full romance arcs. The route is documented in launch coverage, not in an official romance feature guide.
How to pursue the reported Kai romance

Kai is an Avowed companion voiced by Brandon Keener, according to GamesRadar+. The same outlet describes its female Envoy reaching the result and cites PC Gamer’s report of a male Envoy example. That suggests the route is not restricted by the player character’s gender in those reported cases, but it is not evidence of universal testing across every playthrough.
Do other flirt options lead to romances?
Not according to the launch coverage. GamesRadar+ says other flirt exchanges do not appear to lead to romance content like Kai’s route. It also notes possible hints of a relationship involving Giatta, but treats that possibility as unconfirmed. A flirtatious line alone should not be taken as proof of another full romance route.

What is officially confirmed?
The official Avowed site identifies Kai as a companion and provides current game-product information, including the PS5 release. It does not document a romance route. The Kai route details above therefore remain attributed to GamesRadar+ and PC Gamer’s launch coverage; those reports do not establish whether later game updates changed the route.
